Hey guys. As most of you know, we have been forced to move to Apple's maps and abandon Google's one.
The question is: what WE are going to do with this issue? After the maps have been released there were a lot of critics around the internet. They were strong enough that Tim Cook posted an open letter to heir customers. The point is that together we can do much more than alone. A brilliant example were massive protests against ACTA or even Coca Cola after they changed drink's recipe. After those strikes Coca Cola decided to go back to their origin. See how much we mean together?
I know some of you can call me insane, but after all we're paying a lot of our money for all of Apple's products therefore we should be able to decide what services we want to use at least.

What do you think? Any ideas?

Are you for real? We live in a country where millions of people are either unemployed or underemployed. Kids are graduating from high school who can't even read, yet teachers are being laid off left and right. And our politicians vote goes to which ever lobbyists fork over the most money for their reelection campaigns. And yet THIS is the thing you want everyone to get upset about and protest? Seriously?

No it hasn't. Apple can put Google Maps back in iOS 6.1 The coding will take days.

Really? You know that for a fact? Do you have access to the source code for both iOS 6 and the original Maps app, and are able to run a build to determine what modifications might be needed? You have no idea what you are talking about.

Fixed it for ya' ;)

It's one thing to wait in line for hours on end for an item you want (though, yes, it can be rather silly).

It's another thing entirely to organize protests over the save device that no one forced you to buy in the first place, especially when there are plenty of other devices on the market that perform similar functions.

Google Maps is less than perfect.

It may be better presently than Apple's, Google's product STILL doesn't have my neighborhood mapped correctly. No new satellite photo in 10 years and missing streets & homes that have been present for 6 years.

Apple's, on the other hand, has up-to-date satellite photos and has all the streets properly laid out.

Apple is not perfect and Google's first attempt at maps was not perfect either. Apple wanted to bring turn by turn directions to it's customers and this was the only way Apple could do it. Apple's Maps App will get better over time. Tim Cook has apologized, they have other maps right on the front page of the app store, and they even tell you how to put Google Maps back on your phone. What more do you want? No other company would do this!

What the **** is the big deal? How did you people find your way around town before Google Maps on your iPhone? Do you people get lost on the way to the Piggly Wiggly and you need a maps app to tell you how to get there?

Let. It. Go. It's a freaking APP. Learn how to read a map, write directions, or just memorize where you're going. It's done me fine for 42 years and I never get lost.

I work at best buy. I was on the phone for 20 minutes the other day because some lady was furious her GPS didn't inform her about the red light cameras in NYC. She repeatedly told me we were responsible for paying her fine "because if I knew that light had a camera, I would have never gone through it."

20 minutes of my life gone, because of an idiot whom never seemed to realize the conversation was over as soon as I asked "why do you feel we're responsible for you breaking the law?" (her response, hysterically, was "I GOT CAUGHT BECAUSE OF YOU").

I have lost all faith in my fellow humans, consumerism has driven entitlement society to a scary new place where people are not responsible for themselves anymore (at least in their own minds).

I feel your pain.

One of the following.

  • Use an alternative map app (Apple have apparently made this real easy now in the App Store)
  • Stick with iOS 5
  • Kill yourself

It isn't hard. Yes, we all know Apple screwed up. It is super simple to solve it. It doesn't require a new thread on MacRumors. Nor does it require or warrant some sort of strike that all 5 butthurt users who don't know how to avoid an update they don't want or download an alternative app (or kill themselves) will be taking part in.

Really? You know that for a fact? Do you have access to the source code for both iOS 6 and the original Maps app, and are able to run a build to determine what modifications might be needed? You have no idea what you are talking about.

Yeah, I actually do.

And so does anyone who pays any attention to how iOS is structured, or the fact the jailbreak community (even those people who don't want to make illegal distribution of code and therefore are operating with one hand tied behind their back) have it pretty much working already.

----------

Maybe. With all of the hooks in the OS that open up the maps app, I'm thinking it's going to day more than just days, though.

Because you know if Apple releases the old Maps but doesn't make it the default for Contacts, Safari, etc, people are going to freak out.

And if Apple does make it the default, then people are going to freak out.

So they're going to need to add some new functionality into iOS 6.1 that lets people decide which Maps they want to use.

You don't need to change any of the hooks, those hooks just call the Mapkit API.

So you just have the OS define the mapkit API as the existing Google Maps code (most of which is still in iOS6 as shipped!) rather than pointing towards the Apple Maps libraries.

I am being slightly cheeky in that the testing would take a lot longer, but it does appear that Google Maps can be restored with only a few hundred lines of code changes.

Thats bad. I still remember the time I had the person behind me honk because I stopped at a red light before turning right. When did this stop being a law?

No it hasn't. Apple can put Google Maps back in iOS 6.1 The coding will take days.

The contract with Google runs for another 9 months. 9 months to fix this mess, while users don't have to live with the disaster.

Yes this would be a nice good will gesture...

.

Apple should have never partnered with TomTom. That was their biggest mistake, IMHO. They should have used some of that cash and ponied up for Garmin to get them started.

I know some of you can call me insane, but after all we're paying a lot of our money for all of Apple's products therefore we should be able to decide what services we want to use at least.

Wow, you really don't understand how things work in the real world, do you?

I think the spirit of what the original poster was trying to say is that it would be nice to get a say, or at least an option to what we see in our eco-system.

Personally, I wish that we had the opportunity to roll back to iOS5.1

I've been plagued with problems since the upgrade to iOS6, so what should I do?
I can't roll back.
Should I just suffer and accept it until apple decide on a solution, because there's no rollback path?
Should I throw my phone away along with all my app purchases and buy an Android device?

That's clearly not the solution, but i am forced to suffer until they decide to *fix* it.
In this case I don't give a flying fsck about maps. It's all the other problems, battery life, mail, etc.

You know, it bewilders me how some people just accept WHATEVER apple throws at them.
You can see I own and have a lot of apple gear, and that does not include 2 desktop systems not shown in my signature. I clearly like apple stuff, but I won't blindly agree that stupid decisions by them are good, nor will I accept buggy software as "it's OK, it's apple, they'll get around to fixing it". That's totally absurd. They have resources coming out of their arse. They are the RICHEST FSCKing tech company in history. It's just not good enough.

Just one example that doesn't get talked about much:

The Swoosh before SMTP *bug* in iOS6.
What idiot decided that the swoosh sound should happen when you hit send? I know when I pressed send, I don't need a sound to tell me that.

If your phone does not contact the SMTP server, then you have no way of knowing if your message was delivered or not. Before you say "you get bounced mail notification", it's in the case where the mail client could not contact the SMTP server in the first place. Your mail therefore sits in the outbox potentially forever. But hey - you got a swoosh the moment you pressed the send button. Apple told me everything is OK. That is until your boss wonders where that deadline email you promised is.

This is clearly some bit of code writing in iOS6 that is utter RUBBISH.
The correct way is the swoosh happens *after* it has negotiated with the SMTP server. This is fundamental 101 mail client programming.

So - getting back to the original point. I think the original poster of this thread was trying to say, that if enough of apple's loyal customers expressed their opinion on something, then apple might be more inclined to listen.

Or do you think that a company should be arrogant and treat it's customers with contempt?

It's no wonder android people call apple community people sheeple. Think about it.

Flame suit at the ready...

Oooh nice sheep reference! Way to assume! Even though I'm mostly likely moving on to a non iPhone device this time around.

The original poster could have done what I did. Don't download the upgrade immediately (which I ALWAYS do to make sure that there isn't some issue that will brick my phone), see what the general reaction to the device is, and make my decision to upgrade.

Rather simple! In this case, maps doesn't affect me (though believe me, I know it is a much more important app to others) so I decided to upgrade. My thoughts? Not a bad upgrade, but nothing that wows me (hence why I'm thinking of jumping ship).

I'm not a sheep. People who decide Apple Maps sucks and want to try something else aren't sheep. It's the people who don't do their research, download every new update and buy every new Apple device without a single review on the market, and then complain about their "rights" being trampled on who are the sheep.

If you don't like something, don't patronize it. Simple as that.

Wow. What an insane thread.
OP has an iPhone 5. If you don't like it, return it and go away.

I love the iOS6 maps. Love the added turn by turn navigation and integration with Siri. You can still use Google Maps via Safari on the phone.

How dare Apple add all this new function in an update. Users should revolt. Give me my dumb phone back.

Folks just get themselves worked up in an echo chamber.

I'm not turning this into a war, but I feel i need to reply:

Good for you. Move on. It doesn't mean people who have invested thousands of dollars into an eco system should have to just because apple (and by their own admission) fscked something up.

The original poster could have done what I did. Don't download the upgrade immediately (which I ALWAYS do to make sure that there isn't some issue that will brick my phone), see what the general reaction to the device is, and make my decision to upgrade.

Yes, I made that mistake too. Downloaded iOS6 by mistake, but hey - I would have thought that the richest tech company in the world would get their software right *BEFORE* releasing it. There should be a rollback path. What is the logic behind no rollback path?

Rather simple! In this case, maps doesn't affect me (though believe me, I know it is a much more important app to others) so I decided to upgrade. My thoughts? Not a bad upgrade, but nothing that wows me (hence why I'm thinking of jumping ship).

Another "it doesn't affect me" line. Well it does affect thousands, if not millions of others. Not just the maps debarkle, but the other bugs, that probably also don't "affect you" If you wanna jump ship that's fine. No one's gonna stop you. It is your choice. But for the rest of us who decide to remain, we should voice our opinions.

I'm not a sheep. People who decide Apple Maps sucks and want to try something else aren't sheep. It's the people who don't do their research, download every new update and buy every new Apple device without a single review on the market, and then complain about their "rights" being trampled on who are the sheep.

But you sound like a sheep when you say things like "if you don't like it buy something else". It's not as black and white as that. Companies need to be held to account for people who spend their hard earned cash on products, and commit to their eco-systems.

And by the way, I didn't buy any new apple products, but my mistake was to install that POS iOS6 by mistake. What a dumb-fsck I was to think that apple (remember richest tech company in history) would get it right.
It should however be my RIGHT to roll back to where I was on iOS5.1.1.

If you don't like something, don't patronize it.

Might be fair enough for a newbie... but not for people who are already heavily committed. Maybe you got bucket-loads of cash to jump ship on a whim and throw away an investment in an ecosystem.

Millions of people around the world don't.

Even if there is an alternative OR even if google maps becomes available for iOS 6, wouldn't we need an actual iOS update to allow us to choose it over Apple's maps as the default? I mean, how would the alternative integrate with the other apps and functions of iOS?

You keep saying "Richest company in history" as if that automatically gives them the right to own the only time machine ever known to man or something. What does being rich have to do with it? Exxon was rich, they didn't do anything special for their fellow man.

It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor - mapping the world takes time and that doesn't magically appear out of no where. I'm not saying Apple's not in the wrong for releasing something half completed, but they've owned up to it and now they're working on fixing it. Again, no time machines exist so it won't be done today or tomorrow. No amount of additional whining between now and the next update will make the process go faster. The best thing you can do is help if you can or encourage others to help so that our maps will update ASAP. Everything else is basically a waste of breath.

I don't understand this. The maps aren't great...what do you expect? Google has an 8 year head-start over Apple's maps...obviously over the course of almost a decade they're going to have some features that triumph Apple's maps.

If you don't like the new maps and you just bought the iPhone 5, return it. What's so hard about that? Or, if you were foolish enough not to read that Apple was ditching Google's maps for their own in iOS 6 but upgraded anyways on an iPhone 4S or older device, it serves you right to live with them.
