same issue here... was wondering why my gf couldn't hear me sometimes... turned out somehow i was muting the call with my cheek

anyone get an official response from apple on what's going on with this? do they replace your phone at the genius bar or is there a software fix?

Earlier, I was on the phone with tech support for almost TWENTY MINUTES when I muted him with the phone up to my ear. I pulled it away and tried to un-mute him and nothing. It was just stuck. He eventually hung up and I had to reboot and call back.

So yes, I'm having the same proximity sensor problem.

Same problem here. Anyone got their iPhone replace by the Apple as a result of this problem?

Got mine replaced yday but you need to call up and check to see that they have stock to get it replaced with.

The problem does not appear to affect the new phone

Thanks the update. It's also good to hear that your new phone does not have that problem.

Reset all settings didn't work for me unfortunately. While if I hold it pressed up against my ear it's ok unless I move it around like while walking, but if I try to pinch the phone between my shoulder and my ear, it pretty much always comes on.

I've had the issue since launch.

I talked to someone on the phone at Apple today about it and she was aware of the issue and said that they are wanting anyone with that issue to return their phone and get a new one so "their engineers can get a look at the problem".

I went into Genius Bar today and after dude couldn't recreate the issue, he claimed he hadn't heard of the problem and thought it was because i wasn't holding it correctly (BS). Then he said he could exchange it. I swapped out phones and haven't had an issue since.

Ive been having the same problem. I hang up on people randomly and also hit buttons when Im on the phone. Should I go get it replaced or what? Surely this can be fixed by a software update!

I have the same problem. Randomly turns the screen on again. But its very sporadic so I think people in this thread claiming the new one fixed it just haven't experienced it again yet.

Considering my iphone is flawless besides this problem, I don't mind.

I had this happen once -- on launch day. My wife has been complaining of repeated "dropped calls"; but there's never a message (e.g., "call failed"). As such, I'm pretty sure she's been face-ending her calls. Maybe I'll take her phone in for a look-see....

Just wanted to say that the screen lit up while I was driving, just sitting on my leg. I happened to look down and see it light up and I noticed the screen doesn't dim as fast for the calls either. I'm sure they will keep updating the phones though. I remember when 3.? put my 3G into "coma mode". I won't return it because it is blazing fast even on edge.

Yeah I dont think its a "bad iPhone" problem. I think it can be fixed with software. Why? I'm just guessing that they're using the same sensors that the 3GS had and it had no problems. The problems arose when iOS4 came out.

Working fine.

Just to provide some balance, my proximity sensor is working fine. i have the 32Gb model.

When did you get yours? I have a 32 that I got on launch day from Apple.com and have the issue... I am trading in this week.

Are you sure you dont have the problem? I think some may not use there phone like normal and in turn think there phone is fine. So when its up to your ear and you moving around a bit occasionally putting the phone between your shoulder and ear you mean to tell me nothing happens... the screen doesnt come on, no calls on hold, you dont hear a tone noise from pressing number on the keypad???

Give it a real good go and not sit all perfectly still with the phone smashed to your ear and then see how it goes? And with mine it works perfect for about the first minute then the sensor starts to get worse.

Andy,

Let me provide some balance for you....you have the issue, just haven't experienced it yet....in fact, I'm willing to bet $$$ that all users can experience this issue.

If you don't believe me, I'll come and use your phone, show you the issue on your phone....the end.

I'll be return one tomorrow for "yellow hue" flash pictures and numerous cheek mutes, and hangup calls due to a bad sensor.

I got mine last Friday. I don't sit there with it 'smashed to my ear', I use it as normal. I've even watched myself in a mirror whilst on a call to see if the phone screen lights up. It doesn't.

Yeah, whatever. My phone is fine and I'm very happy with it.
