I'll likely end up buying one ... begrudgingly. However I hope they have a way of transferring our downloaded games to the new machine. I have hundreds of gigabytes of games downloaded that I DO NOT want to have to re-install from scratch again. That would be the biggest hurdle when it comes to me buying one.

Also I just assume the extra horse power will end up just 'upscaling' 1080p games to 4k rather than actually being natively 4k. Just like when we went fro SD to HD initially, a lot of content was merely upscaled by hardware.

I guess we'll have to see what happens. If the games are in fact upscaled, for me it's a reason to hold off a bit. I'll probably wait anyway to understand what a new console does in relation to their VR stuff. I just have a feeling 4k and VR are moving so fast that they're making a move to play in that space but the tech isn't mature enough for a company to deliver hardware today that will actually make sense. They're going to have to adapt again in a few years anyway.

Give that one needs a GTX980 Ti to do 4K with decent frame rate, I have serious doubt that a "PS4k" can do it, given the seemingly minor spec bump from what is being speculated. I'll be happy if they can consistently do 1080p at 60fps.

I also think if they do this, it might alienate some of the existing owners. I will upgrade only if 4K Bluray playback is included. It's probably a bad move to have such a short life cycle on a console. This may well be the last gen of dedicated gaming console.

Not entire correct. Even though I agree that the upgraded PS4 may be still a bit too weak for 4K gaming. However, I can play 4K gaming (GTA V, Tomb Raider, Sleep Dog...) on my Mac Pro with 2x 7950 without any problem (my TV only has HDMI 1.4, so 30FPS max). I was a bit hesitate to play games in only 30 FPS, however, I found that's not an issue at all. Not perfect, but I surely can enjoy the game without any trouble (stable 30FPS on high to very high setting).

The 7950 has 28 compute unit, 1792 stream processor, 800MHz... I know I have 2x 7950, so all the numbers are doubled. However, by considering the AMD driver is so poorly written, and the gaming on PC is so poorly optimised. The rumoured PS 4K 36 compute unit, 2304 stream processor @911MHz may actually able to play games at 4K.

The consoles has the advantage that all games can highly optimise to a specific hardware. I was doubt that there is no way an upgraded PS4 can run 4K game. However, if they only aim at 4K 30FPS with medium setting. That's totally possible with this rumoured config. However, if we are talking about 4K 60FPS with good graphics on something like CoD, then I agree that we can simply forget about it.

True, the one thing that console gaming has over PC is better optimization. But, again, given that many PS4 titles are locked at 30fps, I have serious doubt it can push 4x the number of pixels with a spec bump. I'd be more than happy if all titles can run 1080p at 60fps. I suppose it will depend on the title. My single GTX960 (from which I upgraded from a Radeon 7950) can do 4K medium settings 40-50fps playing Grid Autosport, but I wouldn't try that on rise of tomb raider.

Which reminds me, my TV can do 4K at 60hz or 1080p at 120hz. Been meaning to try it. I think I will tomorrow :) Just have to go directly into the TV - my AV receiver will not pass a 1080/120p signal.

This thread is really funny. I had not heard about the ps 4.5 and looked into it. Then I read about the 4k gaming thing and looked at their updated specs and went no way not on that hardware. Then I come here and there is 20 posts going no way not on that hardware. so yeah everyone was thinking the same thing.

Ya, nothing but a marketing moniquer. PS4 Neo sounds better - also because the Neo Geo was always some legendary console I've never layed hands on in person but was a kid's dream come true (supposedly).

Not sure I'll get it btw. If I'm honest, I probably will never put a console anywhere into my apartment that looks like a (cheap) toy. And they all do look like that - fun thing is that only the Ninty ones look matter to fact with no nonsense design choices.

I'll buy it as I've already pre-ordered PSVR so may as well upgrade to this at same time. No doubt Gamestop will have trade in offers.

I know from past conversations that everything in your neck of the woods is extra pricey. How the heck do you afford going through 12+ phones a year, many games and consoles? Are you able to trade/sell enough hardware to not be as expensive in the end?

And pertaining to the topic at hand, I expect that the 4k capabilities for video will be a nice upgrade for some. But I don't see it as being useful since I don't expect to even own a 4k tv for another 3ish year, and only own a single 4k Blu-Ray. The thing that would make me consider upgrading my launch PS4 at all would be a few wish list items, some expected and some simply being a pipe dream.
  • Improved performance for both regular and VR games.
  • SATA 3 bus for the hard drive bus making SSDs much more useful.
  • A dual drive system. Giving us an 128/256GB SSD and a 1+TB HDD would be nice for performance and storage.
I think it could be implemented Fusion Drive style where the system decides on what has a copy on the SSD, or Xbox One style where you could decide the install location and maybe transfer files. Only one would have to be upgradable, but both would be an added bonus. With at least two of those changes I'd have to really think hard about keeping my launch machine.

Yeah I trade in a lot but I still spend frankly too much money on tech. I am self employed, single and don't have a mortgage. That helps.

All you're gonna get is improved game performance and UHD Blu-ray playback...

1080p set owners will see games native 1080p/60 if available.

According to this article, they have seen the Sony specs and requirements for games on the Neo:

You'll probably get native HDR games, the Nvidia Shield is getting an update to play it's streamed games in HDR. But as for 4K, it MAY upscale games like a 4K TV will upscale the picture so how much better the games will look I'm not certain.

Personally having a PS4 with it's loud fan and heat output I am more interested to see if Microsoft launch a new Xbox One slim that is super quiet and produces less heat.

I love my XB 1 so much more, one of the big big reason is the PS4's fan is very loud. TBH, I am not able to hear the XB1's fan, even when I intentional put my ear close to it. But I can easily hear the PS4's even when I am 15' away from the console. What a big contrast.

And if fact you made a good point which I never think of. They may upscale to 4K, but not really render at 4K. A more possible solution is to render something between 1080 and 4K (e.g. 1440P), and then upscale to 4K, this will still make the games looks clearly better then 1080P.

Able to output 4K, and able to render at 4K are two totally different things. So far, the rumours only said the Neo support 4K, which may simply means able to output 4K, but not render at 4K.

Just like back to the PS3 / XB360 days, both console able to output 1080P, but obviously they are not that capable to render at 1080.

Yeah, I think it will upscale them maybe. You need a LOT of power still to run a game natively at 4K and at a good frame rate. It's a lot of pixels to push. You won't get all that in a system the size of a PS4, and the price.

I may just get an Xbox One anyway for Christmas or something, they also offer much better free games every month, Sony with he PS3 was great for that, with the PS4 it's mostly been indie games only! With the Xbox One the free monthly 360 games are even playable because of it's backwards compatibility.

4k tetris would not be possible on a console?

Or when people say 4k gaming, it is only for demanding games like Doom and not for indie games?

When you spend €400 - 500 on a new console for 4k, most folks expectations would be for something greater than Tetris

Yeah, I would never expect getting better than the 1080p/60 out of this generation of consoles. I would guess that some lower requirement games may be able to run at the higher resolution and frame rate, but the latest Call of Duty sure wouldn't.

The higher performance should mean however that any games that currently cause the system to get loud would now be much quieter. I haven't had any of these issues where the console is distractingly loud, but my cousin and friends have complained of it when playing Destiny and GTA. If a game uses 90% of the PS4's capabilities, but would only use ~50% of the updated version's, the fan should be much quieter.

I am a bit outdated, is there any 4K bluray avail now?
Yeah the likes of deadpool and forthcoming titles will be released on 4k Blu-ray. They are of course charging more for them and it includes standard Blu-ray also, but the premium is no more than the premium they charged for 3D versions.

Thanks for the info. That's a greate news for me. I had my 4K TV for more than 2 years now. Can't wait to watch high quality 4K movie.
