This possibly can reduce scalping from the beginning. I heard that scalpers will be asking for the ludicrous price of over $300 for these. Crazy covid times.

You can’t return them if it is engraved, so maybe that’s why they are making it quicker?

This isn't true, actually. You can return them. Apple's site says nothing about not being able to return them and I did ask support right before posting this article.

Edit: Linking Apple's return policy. It says personalized items might not be eligible for exchange at a store, but says nothing about returns. Checking out with a customized AirPods Max also says free shipping and free returns at the top, with nothing anywhere that says a return isn't possible. I don't think no returns for engraved items is a policy anymore, at least not for the headphones. https://www.apple.com/shop/help/returns_refund

My guess is there’s separate stock set aside for engraving that isn’t already stored in retail packaging.

I still have a tickle me Elmo from 1997 that people were spending $1500 for a doll during that Christmas. If you pay scalping prices you are crazy. A couple months after Christmas you can find almost anything at regular price. You just start a 6 month delay of new products that you want. scalpers will be left with stuff they can not sell. And do you really want a product from a complete stranger that could be spreading covid all over the product they are sending to you?

Just seeing this & lol it makes no sense! That aside I love Apple products & generally have no issue with the Apple tax, but the only thing I find crazier in all of this than customization speeding up delivery is that these things cost $600 with Apple Care.
$899 + Apple care in Australia. Joke

Can someone walk me through why this is a good move for Apple? This product seems absurd.

Support don’t always get it right I was told I could get a replacement AirPods Pro case because I had AppleCare that was stollen for nothing just go to the Apple Store it will be free I screen shot the chat but got there and wanted to charge $155 told me support got it wrong.

More likely that Apple reserved some stock at their engraving facility and most people don’t think to get an engraving or they know about the return policy.

Just noticed it- doesn't make sense
Makes perfect sense. If I have 2000 AirPods Max, and 1300 are regular retail units and 700 are set aside for engraving, but everyone buys the regular retail units, I’ll have 700 left over for engraving. Once 700 engraved orders are sold, I’ll have none in which case both options will be back ordered until the next shipping container from China or Vietnam arrives.

Any word on whether the Smart Case is vegan or not? Bloomberg reported that it's leather but there's no evidence of this in the press release or the product page.
Doubt it. Don’t think Apple has ever used vegan leather.

There is a huge market for things like this. Apple is the 21st century Rolex of tech products. Lucky for us they put the money in cool tech like modern RISC based workstations etc. They will sell a **** lot of these headphones.

Did anyone else notice they have a lot of the same features as the high end Beats headphones?? 😂

🤔
All set.

$549 seems on the high end. They'd better be amazing.

Charged with a lightning connector? Aw come on. Make the move to USB-C already. Sticking with lightning is why you didn't sell me an iPhone 12. I want to reduce my clutter, not maintain it.

I would be interested in hearing how they stack up against the Bose I have now (audio, noise cancelation, mike quality).

In that case, it looks like a purse. No way I am carrying that.

Spatial Audio might be fun, but I would have to try it first - but of course there is COVID messing that up.

Seems like a logical next step for a company with an audio team that was put together with some of the best and brightest minds in the industry.

Still, I don’t necessarily feel this should be under the AirPods branding. It’s a well-built pair of over-ear headphones from Apple.

If I were to buy these at that price I would have the word 'Sucker' engraved on them. I love Apple, but not that much.
I think that is already engraved in invisible ink...these are usually sent out to those who preorder a ~$600 headphone set without ever listening to them.

Im not seeing what you guys are seeing that you think is odd. They engrave them in a different location than regular orders ship from. One of the first batches gets sent to that facility. If they still have units available to sell from that batch, you get it once engraved and shipped. Otherwise, you order from the regular batches... which depending on demand can be some time down the road.

I assume maybe some of you guys assume that you place an order, and that unit gets sent over to be engraved... but that’s not the case.
