They know a good number of trigger happy pre-orders will be cancelled in the next few days, just like the overpriced launch HomePod (which saw a, to this day, unprecedented return rate for an apple product). Getting engraved Airpod Maxes out the door ensures unreturnable sales.

I always think now with so many people getting evicted from their homes during this pandemic that $550 could be better utilized with donations this Christmas to the Salvation Army kettle. I ring the bell every year to help my fellow man/woman during tough times.
wrong...they are not getting evicted due to memorandums all over the country.

Don't buy them engraved as you can't return them if you decide that they either don't sound good or aren't comfortable for your head/ears. If you really want them engraved, buy non-engraved ones, try them out, then return them and buy engraved ones.

Edit: Posters below are saying they can still be returned if engraved.

Support don’t always get it right I was told I could get a replacement AirPods Pro case because I had AppleCare that was stollen for nothing just go to the Apple Store it will be free I screen shot the chat but got there and wanted to charge $155 told me support got it wrong.
Yes, support is not always accurate. But there's also nowhere that I can find on Apple's website that says engraved products can't be returned. In fact, when you order AirPods Max with engraving, right at the top it says "free shipping and free returns."

Delivery estimates for the AirPods Max are well into January for most colors, which means there's no chance for orders placed now to arrive in time for the December holidays, but as it turns out, you can get AirPods Max quicker if you choose an engraving.

In the pink color, for example, AirPods Max with an engraving can be delivered between December 30 and January 7, while without an engraving, the shipment estimate is 12 to 14 weeks. The green version will deliver between January 21 and 28 with an engraving instead of the 12 to 14 week estimate, and in blue, adding an engraving cuts the wait by a month.

Silver and space gray AirPods Max are still delivering at the end of December, so adding an engraving only cuts a couple of days off of the shipping time. Engravings can include anything from a single emoji to up to 14 characters.

It's not entirely clear why AirPods Max headphones with engravings are shipping out faster, but it seems that Apple has separate stock set aside for people who choose the headphones with an engraving and without, which explains the shorter shipping times.

It's also possible that Apple will soon have in-store AirPods Max stock, with pickup options that will be available more quickly than waiting for a shipment. AirPods Max are priced starting at $549 and the first deliveries will start on December 15.

Note that there seems to be some confusion over whether Apple products with engravings can be returned to Apple. Apple may not have allowed these returns in the past, but there is no language in Apple's return policy about engravings and Apple's support staff has confirmed that engraved items can be returned.

In New Zealand these are listed at NZ$999. That is NZ$200 over the exchange rate for US$549 at NZ$799
This seems like gross exploitation to me.

Don’t make this mistake. It’s a trap. You can not return engraved products.
But warranty and anything apple care related still goes right? Just the 14 days return no questions ask is what’s waived.

Edit: here in Canada the time frame does get shorter but by now ALL colors are delivered towards March. In that case I’ll just wait... Maybe pick up one in store if it ever gets in stock there. Yep, I’m interested in them, the AirPods Pro changed my view on things Apple on the headphones department, expensive but damn, so easy and comfortable to use.

Anyone that pays 549 for these needs to have their priorities checked. This is just plain greedy of APple to charge that much but there are enough idiots in the world with more money than common sense that they'll probably sell well.

I have no idea who will be buying these outside of NBA and NFL players.
Canadians. They are getting $1500 each from Trudeau per month in additional Covid payments. Their discretionary income rose 7% this year because of that.
