I miss "just works" Apple.

Who's for a Snow Leopard year or two focused up to entirely on bug fixes and optimizations to get us back to "just works" Apple again?

Personally, I don't need gimmicky new features. I'd rather have reliable old features... and then start adding on new software bling if they must.

You expect bug free betas? I fear your ultra high standards are going to leave you perpetually disappointed and feeling cheated by reality.

I just updated to Ventura 13.13.1 a few days ago and lost all network connection on my M1 Mac Mini.

To fix: Turned off Little Snitch, network came back up, updated Little Snitch, reboot, turn Little Snitch back on and everything was fine.

But for awhile there it was pretty nerve racking wondering what was going on. It was nice to know that Little Snitch was on the ball.

I know the "Apple can do no wrong" is strong on MacRumors, but let's be real.

IF Apple was making breaking changes to network filters automatically, they woudl have to publicly document and announce these changes so vendors can make their required updates. Right now, vendors are scrambling and knocking on Apple's door asking what broke.

And, while this is a beta, this is also an issue that should have NEVER passed the QA tests before release. This bug has broke the beta cycle for Enterprises. Any Enterprise that cares about security has network security software installed. We have devices that run beta's specifically to make sure we are aware of any changes. However, after applying the latest beta, I could not do anything. I had to do and EACAS and re-enroll. I literally watched my enrollment process and saw the exact application that was installed before the network broke.

In theory, you are exactly right.

In practice, mistakes happen to something as complex as a modern OS.

That's the difference between theory and practice - in theory there is no difference, in practice there is :)

Uninstalled Little Snitch, didn’t help, still have random internet access. Mostly lack off access
Both Wi-Fi and Ethernet
Cannot send feedback over Feedback Assistant
Can’t even check for system updates
Still have access for local device and locally everything works fine, like airdrop, smart home, plex
Have Mac mini m2 pro

I've used Macs since the 80s and beta software for the last five years or so and this is the worst experience I've ever had in the program. Over the past several weeks, I've been holding my breath hoping I could limp into the next major release and then never participate in Apple's beta software program again. That this week's disaster made it past the developer release and into the public beta (in less than a day!) is horrendous. I only hope that this is a major enough issue that Apple is already working on a patch to provide a quick fix for this connectivity issue and will release it in less than a week's time. Until then, I'll have to depend solely on my Windows 11 laptop because — unlike my Mac — it is always reliable. Wow! Those are words I never thought I'd write.

I agree - I had expected this might be the kind of issue that would prevent a dev beta becoming public since that programme is open to everyone, and would generally assume a little more stability. This one is particularly acute since without specific steps, an update cannot be applied!

Of course, ultimately this is still a beta, and issues do occur. Even in released OSs nasties can happen, so always be ready with backups.

It does though feel as if apple dropped the ball on this one

Can I again encourage anyone affected to raise a feedback issue (I have)

Also reported.

A quick question regarding restoring from time machine back up. When i go into macos recovery it says i need to use migration assistant to restore my data as i would expect (as i am selecting a different build of macos to restore) and then says i need to reinstall macos.

However, nowhere in the process does it say which version of macos it will restore, it simply says "install macos ventura beta". Which build of macos will it install?

Is time machine carrying a full version of the previous build for me to restore from? Or would it simply reinstall 5059b again.

Thanks.

Apple keeps updating their software to add more bugs, instead of fixing the old ones. Software quality control is decreasing constantly. Sheesh !
I think Apple must have zero tolerance for problems reported by static/dynamic software analytics tools. They start using a new version of the tool and it reports new issues and the developers must address them. The change they make introduces new bugs in the software that has been functioning correctly for years. As with most management, the developers find it easier to address the report by changing the software instead of getting an exception for a false alarm.

As people above have said, it's beta software. I half suspect that they incorporated outside libraries that had been updated for security reasons. The things the filters were doing might have been exploits in the hands of bad people.

That would be very unlikely.

That feature might have been deleted because, it interacted with something they changed and that interaction would be bad.

I suspect Apple uses third party libraries. I strongly suspect those libraries fixed potential exploits in their code. I suspect the internet filters were using those potential exploits. I have been seeing much of my Linux software stop working because of updates to Ubuntu. I suspect this is true for many distros.
Apple doesn’t like using third party software (especially open source) because of their copyright and licensing terms.

Novice user here. I hang out in this forum to learn from the rest of you. The thing I learned today was about Little Snitch. Looks pretty useful. (unless you have 13.4b4 installed)

Apple today released the fourth beta of macOS Ventura 13.4 to developers, and it appears that there are some issues with content filtering apps like Little Snitch, Radio Silence, and others.

macos-ventura-roundup-header.jpg

After installing the beta, some users on the MacRumors forums and on Twitter had problems with network connectivity, and managed to narrow it down to interference with firewall apps. MacRumors reader Grant, for example, saw his network cycling on and off repeatedly until he uninstalled Little Snitch.

Twitter user @Aaronp613 had an issue with his Mac disconnecting after updating and he was able to fix it by turning off Radio Silence.

Mac users who are having problems with network connectivity after installing macOS Ventura 13.4 beta 4 should disable their network filtering apps. Those who are concerned about not being able to use the apps for the time being should avoid installing the latest beta for now.

I had this problem, reinstalled the (beta) OS from recovery, it now works fine. (M1 laptop, reboot holding power button, etc)

I'll give it a try. If it works for me, I'll let everyone on the forum know. Thank you for sharing!

Just another reason not to "upgrade"
Thanks, I will stick with Monterey.
Analogy:

I'm never going to move house. Look at the one they're currently building across the street; it has no roof yet! How can I live in a place with no roof???? I'm never moving!

Intentional changes are not the only changes being tested when using a beta branch. But you knew that.

From the Beta Software legal agreement that I'm sure your legal team read and accepted: "In addition, applications and services you have installed or been using may be unable to run or function in the same manner because of your use of the Pre-Release Software."

I believe they changed something with firewall that might have depreciated some old API, so I think developers will need to adapt to this one, not Apple.
This is correct. I had to uninstall my VPN client that I used for work (wasn't using it anymore anyway) and completely remove my VPN software that masked my location (wasn't using that either).

Working great now!

Reinstalling the OS from recovery also worked for me — I am very grateful to shConn02 for his post. Thank you!
Which version macOS are you recovering. Just reinstalling the same build of macOS again?

Can you please provide steps.

Many thanks.

Glad you asked! On both of my Macs — an M2 MacBook Pro and M1 Mac Studio — it appears the PREVIOUS OS was reinstalled. After I went through the process, I had notices on both computers that I have a software update available. Gotta' tell you, I turned off automatic download and automatic installation on both computers. Fool me once — shame on you... fool me twice — shame on me!

The process on a Mac running Apple Silicon is to shut down your computer. Once it is totally shutoff, restart your computer but continue to hold down the power button until "Options" appears. Click on that and choose the option to reinstall the OS. It will take a while. How much time it takes depends on your computer. It didn't take either of mine much time at all and my internet is running as fast as it was previously.

Thanks for this. So you didn’t need to restore any files via Time Machine?

And what macOS version are you on now please?

Version 13.4 Beta (22F5049e) and no backup files were used because I only connect my laptop to my backup drive every few days. In this case, the last time I backed it up was over the weekend.
