Because Apple supplies a fitting tool?

On the one hand, it's not very logical for someone to fall in between 2 sizes and to choose a size larger when it's an item that should fit quite snug.
On the other hand, this is not a very well thought through situation by Apple.

Well, that was exactly the advice I got from an Apple employee on Saturday when I went to the store to pick up my watch. Tight fit suggests I should order a size 8 band, but normal fit suggested a 9. The employee said literally, you should order a 9 because they are very elastic and will adjust to your wrist. Fortunately, they did not have any in stock on that size as it would have been a mistake. Now I am waiting for them to be available in store to go an try them, probably in a couple of weeks, before I buy one.
 
Printers are usually set to shrink to fit page depending on your margin settings and printer’s printable area. There’s normally some configuration to do to try and get something actual size out of a printer. Doesn’t seem like the best method for estimating size to me.

Very much this, and on top of that. Was the sizing tool made for US letter or A4 size even?
 
This is always going to be a problem with the Apple Watch. Too many colors and bands, they can't make enough of them at launch.
This year is even worse as many people are not willing to go to an Apple Store so they can only guess their band's size with that piece of paper.
 
Not to start an argument but if you order something tailored and it doesn’t fit then you have to wait months for the replacement you have every right to be upset. They provided the tool. People confirmed the print with a credit card and are still having sizing issues. It was “tailored”. Also I wouldn’t expect to return a whole outfit if the shoes don’t fit right.
Apple definitely has their part in this, but I do wonder how people managed to use the tool and somehow be 3 sizes off.

All of this doesn't matter. They also include in the same page the silouette of a credit card for reference. If your credit card fits exactly in the silouette, your printing is fine. I tried the printed one at home and the plastic one they provide at the apple store and the result was identical
 
Now I feel lucky that I ordered my watch with a new leather loop and some solo bands separately
I ordered it with a regular silicon band that I was going to get anyway and then separately ordered a leather band and a braided solo loop. I have cancelled the braided one after seeing all this trouble. I will go to the store when they are available to try it personally before I get it.
 
I dunno what I find more a joke. This ridiculous process or the fact that the already overpriced sports band at £50 are now £100 for a slight variant on a similar material.

so on one hand we are meant to believe Apple is ditching chargers ‘coz environment not corporate grubby greed’ but on the other hand returning a whole product due to a defective detachable part is perfectly normal.

let’s see the usual suspects try and defend this.

I wonder what happens to all these returned watches and bands?

Do the watches end up as Apple Refurbished models? What about the bands? Are they just discarded? Are they cleaned and resold?

I’ve wondered this when returning accessories, since Apple offers a 2-week, no-questions-asked return on all purchases, even if you’re missing some or all of the packaging.

I figured for things like cables or adapters they might just become store stock used in the back rooms or at The Genius’s Pleasure. Surely they can’t be discarded.
 
Unfortunately my space grey 44mm Nike model arrived today with a scratch on the screen right out of the box. Support told me I’d have to mail the watch back and wait for inventory to become available for a replacement. I decided to just return it. My series 4 is fine for now.
 
I don't know about that. I bought my watch with a regular silicon strap cos 1) that is the one I use at the gym and 2) I could get the watch right away. But I ordered already a couple of the new ones to be delivered in November. I have tried third party straps, and at least the ones that are significantly cheaper than the Apple ones, are very far from them in terms of quality. Same happens to me with third party iphone cases. Official Apple cases are way better than anything else (unless you get something as expensive) in my opinion.

I would hazard a guess that the cheap knockoffs have a 10x markup and no doubt the "Real McKoy" units have a similar 10x markup...all relative of course.

As someone who works in supply chain you always end of with too few or too many of one size in clothing that have to be liquidated. That is baked into the cost the consumers pay. So Apple passing on the extra cost of this dumb idea to us. Thanks.

It would be nice if you could buy the watch on its own and get 50 taken off for the band... but that probably wouldn’t happen as the band only costs about 5 to make I’m guessing

You know, for the price, Apple should just mail all 9 sizes to us and let us pick the one which best fits our wrists.
 
And it is suspect that the band fitting chart doesn't take into account the Watch size. The difference between the 40mm. and 44mm. cases, is 4mm., which should be taken into account when deciding on a correctly-sized band. And, where I am, all Apple stores are closed, so in-person trying is impossible. Even if they were open, I doubt that sanitary concerns would allow bands trying in-store.
 
Well I never saw this coming, wait I did 😄.

Apple, you need to pull that measurement tool off your website as it's bloody crap, and remove every one of those measurements tools you have in store as they are wrong for the majority of people. Recommending me at a 10/11 yet my perfect size was 7 while I could still squeeze two fingers between the strap and band without much effort.
 
These bands seem like a great idea. But after reading of the fit issues some are having I’m inclined to believe they wouldn’t work for me. While not having to deal with the bulk of a clasp and excess material, I’d prefer to be able to adjust my band.

Also, I have a slender wrist relative to my hand. I think I would have trouble getting the correct size Band over my hand.

Still seems like a great idea though. I hope Apple gets it worked out for everyone.
 
Did i read the article right? If an Apple watch owner buys the new strap from an Apple store, gets it delivered and fits it themselves, if the strap is the wrong size due to the sizing chart not being correct, the watch owner must send the complete watch back to Apple to have the correct size strap fitted?? That is just a bizarre decision. Just get the customer to send the strap back. Why implement a rule that would mean the customer being without their actual watch. I just don't get it.
 
I wish I shared your optimism but this sort of issue is just par for the course with the modern Apple.
I think the problem with the bands is going to snowball if Apple doesn’t adjust their policy quickly. I also think they need to consider a different strategy of customer service, if they are going to keep a lot of their stores closed.
