I was upset with Reddit after the company changed its interface to lock out third-party platforms and treated the protestors like garbage. I guess somebody there didn't like what I had to say, because I found my Reddit account password changed without explanation. The overpaid CEO doesn't seem to understand that he needs the users to contribute content to the site for Reddit to monetize that content. We don't need Reddit. Don't invest money in this corporation, don't give it any more content, and don't even visit the domain name. There are plenty of Groups-capable social-media sites available now that are not evil. Contribute to those companies that respect their users, and leave the hostile relationships that you may have with evil corporations.

I deleted all my reddit accounts in mid-June and haven't been back there except a few times via Google search results here and there. Shout out for Lemmy, which has lots of nice little communities like the early days of Reddit before gestures broadly all of this.

Since when does is reddit showing ads ? Adblock anyone ?
yeah
but then, i've encountered several websites that wont let you in if you're blocking ads

like, i understand why, you need to earn money somehow, and by the look of how much ads YT and IG started showing in last 2 years, revenue per ad has decreased significantly (pretty sure Apple can take at least some credit for that :))

curious if/when some big ad-based sites will go out of business (*cough cough* X *cough cough*)

What I don't understand is why do the ads have to be user-focused? They could literally have the ads be tailored to the content of the subreddit you're in, since you're usually interested in whatever is going on there. It's the perfect model that they refuse to use for some reason.

They have to pay for those servers somehow. It isn't free.
That's what people said when they disabled all the third party apps. What an unimaginably bad take.

How much do these servers cost, anyway? They've been paying for them fine since 2005 without this ability to turn it off. It's moreso the greed at the top. Greed consumes and ultimately destroys everything it touches. This will be no different.

The end of Reddit was months ago. I quit that site for many reasons, along with another internet tech forum that had gotten way too political... and you know what? I couldn't be happier! 😄

All they're doing is continuing their downward trajectory to the very bottom, as Steve what's-his-name goes down in history as the guy who ruined Reddit. So long, sayonara, it was good while it lasted, but it can lay in the dirt with Digg. ✌️

Reddit is checking off all the prerequisites to an IPO. Close off free API / third party apps, remove ability to disable ad personalization (force more data collection), and I’m sure there’s more changes in the works.

Wall Street is hungry, and it’s not going to feed itself. 🤤

I enjoy living in a pretty much ad free bubble. I use several ad blockers at the same time and if something i not available without ads, I will just not access it. Some say ads are the fuel of the internet economy, but I feel they have pretty much destroyed the internet, which used to be a place where opinions and content was shared without trying to make money out of it.

I was not even aware that Reddit shows ads.

UBlock Origin is the gold standard of adblockers. Unfortunately since we don't got sideloading (yet) we can't use it on iOS, while Android users can.
Which makes me wonder… what are they doing as an adblocker that they wouldn’t be able to release it for Safari? Some evening googling for me I guess :)

Reddit this week announced that it will no longer allow Reddit users to opt out of ad personalization, which means that ads on the platform will be targeted based on site usage.

And this is how Apple will kick Reddit out from App Store. If I’m right, it’s in guidelines that users are given chance opt out of ad personalization.

Pretty sure if Reddit goes forward with this, it’ll violate App Store guidelines in big way.

Reddit this week announced that it will no longer allow Reddit users to opt out of ad personalization, which means that ads on the platform will be targeted based on site usage.

Right now, users can choose to toggle off an option to "personalize ads based on your Reddit activity and account info," but this toggle is being removed going forward. Reddit claims that it requires "very little personal information" and the change will be able to predict ads that are more relevant to each person.Reddit claims that the "vast majority" of Reddit users will not see changes to their ads, nor will users be seeing more ads. With no option to opt-out of ad personalization, Reddit is adding new toggles to limit ads from specific categories, including Alcohol, Dating, Gambling, Pregnancy & Parenting, and Weight Loss. Machine learning will be used to classify ads, so users will not be able to opt out of these ad categories entirely.

In select countries, the option to turn off ad personalization will remain, allowing Reddit to continue to comply with GDPR restrictions. Reddit users without the option to turn off ad targeting can expect to see ads that are based on subreddits they belong to, content that is upvoted, and more.

Reddit earlier this year made changes to the cost of its API, cutting out almost all third-party apps and forcing the majority of users to view Reddit on the website or on the Reddit app, both of which support ads.

Reddit says that these ad changes started rolling out yesterday.

And the en********ation of Reddit continues. Honestly, it’s a bit heartbreaking.

Did modifying those API prevent 3rd party websites from backing up old posts by users?
Yup. If you haven’t backed everything up, I believe it is too late (I could be wrong though, and this change hasn’t gone into place yet).

As much as I have no desire to be tracked or profiled, I have also become quite good at completetly tuning out ads...

Even if you consciously tune out ads, research in psychology and marketing suggests that ads can still influence you on a subconscious level. This phenomenon is called “priming.” Studies have shown that exposure to certain stimuli, even if you’re not consciously paying attention, can influence your subsequent thoughts, behaviors, and decisions. So, while you might not actively notice or engage with an ad, it might still shape your preferences, attitudes, or behaviors without you realizing it.
