If it were a small number or percentage, then we wouldn't have people going in to get their MacBook Pros repaired three or four or even five times. If the odds were 1%, then the odds of requiring five repairs would be on in 10^5 which should basically mean that it should never happen. But we've had many people with three repairs - which shouldn't happen if it were truly rare or small.
I don't think that's good statistics you're using there. Anyway, it doesn't matter. The bigger picture is this: a manufacturer of hardware is going through a rough spell with some problems. People complain. The complainers search and find forums and are heard, despite their relatively small numbers. Hardware manufacturer (hopefully) fixes the problems.

Apple has made hardware before. They have made mistakes before. They fixed them. They will fix them now, too. No reason to think a PC manufacturer from the top 5 is going to destroy itself all of a sudden after a few problems.

Now, if Rambo's predictions are anywhere near the truth, we're in for a treat later this year.

We don't have hard statistics. Apple does. So I'm using my paraphrase of Apple's description of their statistics.

Yes, they fixed the 2011 video issues. If you have one and they fixed it with the same card, it would likely break again. This happened for me. Of course they stopped fixing anymore a few years ago. So pretty unsatisfactory results. I'm also a shareholder and this stuff annoys me to no end. I'm just not a big enough shareholder. I wish Warren Buffett used a MacBook Pro.

It's not like I'm new at this. I've had six or seven motherboard replacements by Apple.

I feel for you, but simple statistics just don't work here. They work at the first problem, but not afterwards. Why not? Because when a keyboard is problematic, they spray it with compressed air and it's "fixed". We all know that's not true. That's why even if it's 1% getting problems with their keyboard, it will be a much higher percentage that has problems after that. Say, 1/3? If you then look at the chance of getting 4 "problem fixes" after the first one, it's over 1%.

I'm not talking about that fix. I'm talking about the replacement fix that costs $500.

Exactly. “Small number” is bull****ese for “Less than half” whether that “small number” is 1% or 49%, nobody outside Apple knows. But they have made it clear they aren’t going to remotely say.

At least with Microsoft and their October 2018 cumulative update 1809 that resulted in data loss, Microsoft was specific about the percentage of users they believe had been effected stating "In this case the update was only available to those who manually clicked on “check for updates” in Windows settings. At just two days into the rollout when we paused, the number of customers taking the October 2018 Update was limited. While the reports of actual data loss are few (one one-hundredth of one percent of version 1809 installs), any data loss is serious."

Whether or not they are honest is a different discussion and known only to MS, but at least they did attempt to quantify the number. Apple isn't even coming close by saying "small number."

To each their own. I think the Surface Pro line is horrible. Bad tablet, mediocre laptop. Never understood this device.

I love my Surface Pro, I hate my iPad. These two statements and $1 will get you a cheeseburger off the McDonalds value menu :)

As some of you may know, I brought a Surface Pro 6 November of last year (Black Friday deal), initially I wasn't a big fan. But just lately I've been using it more and more, over that time I've found it to be a good little device. MacOS is still a better OS in my opinion, however the Surface Pro 6 is some great hardware. I have to eat some humble pie because my previous comments were not so positive about Surface devices.

I do believe that there is a learning curve and I needed to put more time into the device.

Apple's current keyboard isnt for me, they have to many issues and I can't trust it. Until Apple fix it and work hard at restoring faith I'm going to keep using my Surface Pro 6. I'm no longer selling it and have removed it from sale.

Yes I really like my Apple products, but paying out thousands of £ for a laptop that has issues with the keyboard, just isnt right. Before anyone jumps on the "Apple hater" bandwagon, I have been an Apple fan for many years, I own an iPhone X, iPad Pro, Apple Watch S4 and an iMac 2012. I'm just not going to stick up for Apple when they are clearly in the wrong. In order for me to consider getting a new MacBook Air or Pro, they NEED to fix the keyboard. What I may do is wait it out and see if they redesign the iMac next year, I will then buy one of those instead.

On paper it shouldn’t work! In reality when using it as a laptop it works well. Yes MacOS is more refined and overall a better OS, but hardware wise the Surface Pro is very good. The kickstand is useful, something I’m surprised Apple haven’t done.

Don’t get me wrong I still own a Mac, my 2012 iMac. It’s taken me some time to appreciate the Surface Pro 6 that I purchased, there is definitely a learning curve but I’m getting there.

Apple have brought it on themselves really, the keyboard on their MacBooks need fixing and we are yet to see a redesigned iMac. I really hope they get back to form at some point in the not so distant future.

Even the biggest Apple fan is now criticising them for the keyboard issue. You know it must be bad when Drew from Tailosive Tech is bashing Apple over the keyboard issue.

OMG I can't believe it. Drew!!! I never thought I'd see the day. On a happier note, I just got a new PineBook delivered today. I can't wait to start playing with it. Someone in this thread mentioned it. I must find them and thank them.

Let me know when Austin converts. He could do a video spending 30 minutes showing how some computer is better than his Mac and still conclude that, despite giving the other computer a win in every single category, that the Mac is still far better.

It is a wonderful tablet and a very good portable computer. Just because Apple didn't do it is no reason for you to bash it. It lays flat for taking notes, and it is fantastic to draw on using top quality applications vs watered down mobile apps. It was popular enough for Apple to attempt to copy it functionality with the iPad pro, which has a worst keyboard, no built in stand, and no file management, and using only a mobile system.

I've owned them and they're good for a specific demographic. The Surface Pros are not meant to go head to head against the 15" MBP or anything of that class. They're a tablet that can run desktop software (something the iPad cannot do), and act like a laptop. Conversely the Surface Book machines are the opposite, they're laptops that can act like a tablet.

There's something to be said to have a tablet that run desktop class apps, and many folks need that level of flexibility.

I've never liked Tailosive Tech, but man... I've just noticed how much he relies on jump cuts when talking. Is he incapable of forming lengthy, coherent sentences?

Agreed, though. You know it's bad when even the hardcore fanboys are joining in with the criticism. My work computer is a 2018 15-inch and I like it overall, but definitely prefer the 2015 I use at home. I'm fine with having a Touch Bar model for work because I didn't pay for it, but there's no way I'd buy one now for personal use.

pulled the trigger, bent the knee, im dell'd like a farmer!
13xps running windows, but will switch to unbuntu soon.
the last straw was my airbook is not charge for no particular reason.

Wonderful tablet? I think not. No real tablet apps, awkward to outright terrible holding it in portrait.

My advice, get both a good tablet and a separate good laptop. There isn't a device yet that exists that does both well.

So if the criteria is to have a laptop that also functions 'ok' as a tablet, then maybe I see your point. But I cant believe anyone would ever choose the tablet functions of these devices over a dedicated tablet.

Actually there are quite a few apps that run well on it as a tablet. If your idea of a tablet is primarily as a consumption device running so called Freemium games etc... well ok. On my Surface Pro I run Affinity Photo, Rebelle, and Sketchbook, all from the store and made for the tablet environment. In addition to being able to run full Painter which also has a tablet mode. Microsoft provides Office in tablet form as well. There are quite a few real games not freemium crap, and I have Steam installed which has some great simulation games, that I prefer that are not "sucker" games that run in so called real time and ask for money in order to play.

I have no 'Freemium Games' on my iPad Pro. I do have database apps, ebook apps, educational apps, task managers, calendars, note taking apps, photo, video editing, etc.

Jeez, that is an odd assumption

Running desktop class software as I mentioned :)

curious, what desktop software do you use in tablet mode on your Surface?

And all of what you mentioned can be found for the Surface in tablet mode... so that negates you statement that there is no tablet software for the Surface Pro. And as I stated desktop software that has a tablet mode and runs well is to include Corel Painter, Adobe Photoshop, MS Office, Corel Draw, Lightroom, and much more. In addition there are quite a few games that are now tablet ready to include Civ 6. So you see the experience on a Surface Pro is quite wide, varied, and enjoyable, not to mention productive if you make the effort and go into it with an open vs closed mind.

I have an iPad and a iPad Pro. I enjoy them and I can get work and play done on them as well. They are easy and everything is right there in the app store, even if not always the best quality. I understand why some might prefer that, but you can have preference without prejudice.

My workplace provides us with MacBook Pros and mine is a 2015. I have a coworker with a 2017 and it's been in the Apple Store twice for repairs. Yes, it will get fixed but you might not have the use of it for a few days to a week.

In your shoes, I'd ask for a 2015 (people turn them in) or get one used. I did exactly that a few months ago.

I wouldn’t buy any Apple computers made after 2015. When I watch their keynote presentations it becomes clear that Apple isn’t really interested in the computer end of things anymore and is focussing mostly on iPads iPhones and Apple TV. To me that signifies the writing is on the wall and apparently Microsoft also is aware of this as they’ve made vast improvements in their software over the last year or so. Switching to a Windows device might not be as bad as you think.

I really do love macOS but there are benefits to Windows. My feeling on Windows is more that I tolerate it. I love the iCloud ecosystem and heavily use Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Mail, Keynote, Pages and Numbers and I like the seamless aspect from mobile or PC devices or even the web. Yet, there are two large applications that run better on Windows. One is Fidelity Active Trader Pro that runs on macOS under Wine. They have issues with Wine and macOS from time to time so sometimes a new version doesn't work for a few months because of incompatibilities. The other is Think or Swim and, it runs under macOS but I've heard that it runs better under Windows. Both of these can use a lot of memory too and this would make a mobile workstation ideal. It is nice that you can get MacBooks with 32 GB of RAM but the Lenovo P72 and Dell Precision 7700 provide four RAM slots that allow you to go up to 128 GB of RAM. I only need 32 now (I run two laptops) but it would be nice to future-proof my choice.

My idea would be to use the Windows workstation for trading and do my other work and personal stuff on a 2015 MBP. There's been nothing so far to interest me in recent MacBook Pros. Maybe late 2019 or 2020 will be the ticket. The thing is that the numerous mobile desktops out there where you can incrementally expand, present a better value equation. Apple should allow upgrades to their MacBook Pros. I wouldn't mind if you had to have Apple do it. Come to think of it, they should allow you to upgrade your iPhone too - that is you decided that you wanted more storage - just change a chip or two and get more.

I hope to get another five to six years out of my 2014 and 2015 MacBook Pros. I hope Apple gets its Mac act together by then.

I have a mid 2015 15 inch MBP.. and I have honestly no idea what i’m going to replace it with when the time comes... I paid around £1400 for it (2.2Ghz, 256gb, 16gb, Iris gfx) if memory serves... the 15 inch MBP’s are just so expensive now... they START at 2400. I know the spec is nicer but that’s a HUGE jump.

I’m holding out hope that full fat Photoshop on the iPad Pro is as good as i’m expecting... then the only thing I’ll find myself using the MBP for is writing RaspberryPi SD images....

To keep this comment vaguely on topic... you should pull the trigger on a new one if you’re not paying the bill!

I just can't justify buying a new MacBook at the moment while the keyboards have issues. It's a gamble I just can't take. Apple need to fix it.

gamble in your favor.. i have the 2016 mbpr tb, the one that is supposed to have the worst version of butterfly keys, and it still works flawlessly
