Congrats,
I'm also curious to see how the acasis will work. There's been some reports of the drive getting a tad hot. Some of the YTs mention that you may need to put multiple strips of the thermal pads so the ssd makes contact with the housing

I went with the prebuilt OWC Envoy Ultra myself. That should be arriving today/tomorrow.

So the acasis came . I PUT in a Samsung 990 evo plus 4tb size.
I got the case from acasis store on ebay 202 usd. I got the ssd on ebay 234-23= 213. So 415usd for a 4tb thunderbolt 5 case ssd. Black magic read 5900 read and write. I cloned the mac studio 1.2 tb info out of 2tb in 11 minutes. I am using the 4tb acaisi as the boot drive and leaving the internal pretty much alone. Time will tell durability etc. I CAN watch 4k streaming with no issues. So far it seem to be a must buy 415 is pretty cheap for a 4tb thunderbolt 5 ssd. OWC charges 599 for its Thunderbolt envoy. Ladies also want 599 formits 4tb thunderbolt 5. I hope it lasts as durability is important

Sounds fantastic.

No signs of Thunderbolt 6 yet. Then maybe Apple will ship Studios with 0 GB storage.

Well if it is durable and does not dismount over and over it makes buying the minimum ssd in the studio an easy choice.

Because I use the studio with a 65 inch Samsung 4k TV fan noise is not an issue as I sit 9 feet away from it and use a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I have a nice copper lid box next to the TV and the acasis sits on top of it. It helps pull more heat from the acasis case. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED CLONING THE 1.2TB INTERNAL TO IT IN 10-11 MINUTES. Basically the internal and external worked close to 5900 speed with zero throttle.

Wow, those are nice speeds! I've been using the Acasis TBU405 with a 4TB WD blade for my Mac Mini M2pro. Speeds a little below 3000MB/s. I've been really happy with it, but I decided to get a Mac Studio, spec it up a bit and I will want the 5900 read and write speeds. The present Acasis will do nicely for back-up.

As to keeping the case cool, I inserted a few layers of thermal pads in my case too, to the point that I had difficulty closing it. But it worked in that it is always cool to the touch.

Regarding the noise, I don't have a problem with fans during intensive tasks. It's that electronic whine that I was afraid of. But since everybody has a silent Mac Studio, I'm going to go ahead and get one.

I have to admit that I’m really curious about using a TB drive to speed up loading of my LLMs (which currently reside on Crucial X9 Pro external SSDs) but, given that the Crucial drives aren’t exactly lethargic, I can’t justify the cost outlay. Maybe one day when they become more affordable.

I am assuming that you are using the external drive as the start-up one. Right? Also, did you use CCC or SuperDuper?

While the Studio I plan to buy this year will have a 2TB and 128GB RAM, I still want to have an external start-up as a backup.

I used superduper. So far it has been flawless. Except it seems like I can not run Time Machine if I use the external as a boot drive . For me it is not an issue. As I can do what you are doing. As I have a 2tb internal

Hold on, it's possible to create a reliable bootable external drive on a Silicon Mac now? I used Superduper on my old Mac Pro for over a decade, loved it, but I couldn't get it to work on my Mac Mini M2 pro. Although that was under Ventura, so maybe things have progressed? A SD clone does boot now?

The last time I did that was on my M1 mini but I've done that on lots of Macs. My 2015 iMac 27 and 2010 iMac 27 are other examples.

Well, I was referring to Silicon Macs (I've edited my post to include that). Super Duper was flawless on Intel Macs but not so much on my Mac Mini M2 pro. Even if you could clone the hard drive it wouldn't be bootable.

I've had no problems on Apple Silicon but I think that's been limited to my M1 Pro and M1 mini. I did clean installs, not SuperDuper.

As far as I understand it both CCC and SuperDuper can't create bootable drives with the Mac M4 chip.

I need to get another 4TB disk and I think I will get the same combo. How hot does the SSD get with normal use?
I have not been able to make it too hot to hold. It is a constant warmish feel. When watch 4k streaming from Netflix or Amazon. The warmest it was happened during the cloning of the internal ssd to it via super duper. Around 1tb in 11 minutes time.
