Yeah I am a bit better today. So I did get more info from the acasis booting os drive.

Since it has a samsung evo plus I got Samsung magician to read it. and played around with black magic speed test.

Samsung magician says the temp sensors are 348 and 328 and black magic gives me 5400 and 5600 speeds

I am not on the studio I am on my m4 mini I will screen shot and post smart info on the evo later today.

not sure how to translate the 347 and 327 temp number the other day they were 348 and 328 No over temp numbers show up on the over temp counter just a zero.

That doesn't sound right, if we are to assume that is fahrenheit

348 fahrenheit = 164 celsius

I believe safe operating temps for SSDs are anything under 70 celsius and its basically reporting more then 2x of that temp?

yeah it runs really good and every report says temps are good.

the studio internal show 299 so maybe 29.9c

k makes sense. the apple drive is idle so 299-273=26c the Samsung evo is the os and 327-273=54 and the other one is 347-273=74. Plus the drive never got too hot as no warning temps ever triggered. Nice thanks again

Yeah? I have the Acasis TBU405 case that I'm very happy with but I need a second one and I'm on the fence. The Acasis TBU501 is expensive, 299 euro. I can get another Acasis TBU405 for 85 euro. That's a significant price difference.
Big price difference I paid about 190eur or 203usd on the usa ebay link. From what I have seen on YouTube the thunderbolt 4 model is pretty good you should do around 3700 / 3600 speeds which are very fast .

So far the thunder bolt 5 is great. I figured out how to do a black magic speed test and how to see smart info.

The only thing that I can't seem to do is time machine. But I do have a few work arounds that keep me backed up.

Today, I purchased a refurbished M3Ultra Studio with 28 core CPU/60 core GPU/256 GB RAM/4 TB SSD for $5,600 USD (about $1,000 below list price for new machine). I will receive on Monday next week.

I am a laptop user and plan to run the Studio from a M1Max MBP16 for use with Davinci Resolve through High Performance Share Screen--I like sitting in a recliner to do my editing. I have tested this concept with an M2 MBA remotely running Davinci Resolve on the M1Max MBP16--works great. I hope for improved performance now that Davinci Resolve will reside on the Studio.

Will let you all know how it all works out.

Post more about this as it is an interesting way to control your studio. I have a 65 inch 4k Samsung tv about 10 feet from the couch I sit on. But I use a wireless mouse keyboard to control every thing using a laptop to run my studio makes some sense. I would like to see what you do.

Will do.

Hi Phillip:

Finally got the M3Ultra MacStudio set-up for use with Davinci Resolve Studio and Acon Digital Acoustica. The goal is to control the Studio with a M1Max MBP16 using High Performance Screen Sharing (HPSS). I have edited one video using HPSS and my impression is that the process was seamless. I was concerned that I might have difficulty with editing the audio. But this all worked as well as if I was editing directly on the Studio. I now have the advantage of editing sitting in a recliner, using a laptop that is not overheating, not throttling, no need to recharge the battery and still have the power of the M3Ultra. This experiment was rip roaring success.

Hope this helps others.

Don

One more thing. When the it is time to purchase a new laptop, I will scale back a to base a model MBP16 with the Pro processor instead of the Max.

Nice idea. here is hoping it keeps working.
Hi Phil,

So do I. The M3Ulta is almost twice as fast in encoding (should be as there are twice the number of encoders) and almost twice as fast in face tracking (again, should be because it has almost twice the number of GPU cores) vs the M1Max.

The only disappointment is AI Voice Modeling. I use this when I mis-speak to fix the errors. Here, I found no difference in the performance between the M1Max and the M3Ultra--both took about 1 hour 10 minutes to complete the model from a 5 minute sample. I found this result surprising as the M3 Ultra has almost twice the resources. My guess is that AI Voice Training on Davinci Resolve Studio has yet to be optimized or is one of those Rosetta applications that are imbeddded in MacOS version of Davinci Resolve Studio.

Hope this information helps others.

Sometimes software takes months to catch up to better hardware.

When quad cores ruled years ago upgrading to a hex did not speed up because the software only used 4 of the,six cores.

Hi Phil:

That is my hope. What troubles me is that when Apple launched M1 chips they featured BlackMagic Design (BMD) as a "partner" and how well Davinci Resolve performed on Apple Silicon. So BMD is aware on how to make their products work on Apple Silicon.

What was a real eye opener for me is that when I installed Davinci Resolve Studio (DRS) on the Mac Studio it asked me to install Rosetta. I said to myself "what the hell", I thought that DRS was a native application. Subsequently, I learned that some of the modules in DRS require Rosetta.

My concern is that BMD just "cheeped out" with the AI applications, took the x86 version and got them to work in MacOS using Rosetta.

I do not plan on changing from DRS to any other NLE because it is just to easy to use in comparison to FCP or Premier. In any case, I hope that BMD puts in the effort to take advantage of all those CPU and GPU cores.

when all is said and done the studio is a very good piece of gear.

if you can combine veteran refurbished and gift cards you can get some very good specs.

the max 4

16 /40/16 cpu
128gb ram
512 gb sdd
and a 4tb external thunderbolt ssd

is 3500+500 or 4000.

but with all the discounts I mentioned

the studio is about 2800+400 for the external ssd.

it is a beast for 3200usd pretty much bulletproof.
