It's just one more thing to stick it to you. I remember when GOOD headphones, a couple of chargers and the dock would come with an iPod. That was back when they weren't grubbing to rape you of every cent possible. Now you are lucky to get the box it comes in.

You got a box with yours?

Actually I didn't get a box with my last one- it was a replacement from the Apple Store....:D

Yeah, just waiting for the "green justification" to hand you one bare with a receipt. "Thanks sucker, now get the hell out of our store."

As a modern consumer, you should do some research of your goods from Google before your purchase action. This will avoid many troubles.

I will remember to "research" my next Apple computer purchase to make sure Apple is not shipping it with an out-of-date operating system.
:D
Shame on Apple.

This is really sad. I would have made the same mistake...

First off, it is not only enhanced functions you get with the software update, but security fixes as well.

Being an Internet connected device the Touch should have automatic security fixes for old versions or updates should be free - end of argument.

I bet Apple is doing this to discourage people to buy a Touch and a phone instead ...

Mind you they have this SnowLeopard promotion going just now, so that you get SnowLeopard for only 10$ if you buy now.
Why can they have to make it difficult for Touch buyers is beyond my comprehension....

It clearly says that the 3.0 software update is available for $9.95, therefore not included. For refurbished units, Apple assumes you know enough about iPods to buy a refurbished unit, which is already $50 cheaper (for iPod touch 2G 8GB model).

To be honest, when I got my iPod Touch with the back to school promo a couple of weeks ago, I intentionally delayed the MBP purchase until 3.0 comes out. I assumed that since 3.0 is out, either the Touch will come with the 3.0 already installed or at least I will get a free token upgrade to 3.0 because I bought it after 3.0 is out. I was wrong.

It's true that I didn't research it at all, but I'm not too pissed about it either. In fact reading that people's iPod Touches are having trouble with 3.0, I ended up holding off to get it until Apple comes out with an update.

Thanks for posting that pic. I went to the Apple site and sure enough that info is right there when you click on purchase. Get over it folks

It doesn't say anywhere which OS comes with the iPod, now does it? Why hide that fact? Why not make it clear to the average consumer so that they could factor the $10 into the amount they are going to spend?

It does not say anything about needing to upgrade to 3.0 when you click "Select" (BTW, there is no "Purchase" button). It goes to the engraving option screen and then to your cart and shipping options.

There is an info link about 3.0, but nowhere does it say that the brand new iPod that you are about to purchase does not come with the brand new OS.

Man, if I were a retailer you would be my favorite kind of customer. "You take what I give you! No questions!" And you would defend me for acting that way. Amazing. Cult of Mac, indeed.

Yeah, I saw that site before I posted, but I thought that it was (intentionally?) ambiguous. Perhaps it was wishful thinking on my part, but I sort of read it the opposite way as the previous poster. I thought the apple website was stating that previous owners of the iPod Touch (as in, those who purchased prior to the new OS) could buy the update. Precisely because of that, I assumed that newly purchased iPod Touches would contain the update.

The people who frequent this website are generally well informed about Apple and Apple products. I think the fact that so many people who have responded to this thread - both those who support and those who have been critical of Apple - did not realize that new iPods would not contain the new OS is telling. I think that Apple owes it to its customers to at least clearly state the specifics about the product it is selling on its website. As I wrote previously, the Apple rep I talked to on the phone stated that Apple has no plans to ship 2nd Gen Touches with OS 3.0. It would be quite easy for Apple to state this clearly on their website so that their customers could make informed decisions.

But it does say this:

Now available for every iPod touch.
Available for $9.95 from the iTunes Store, the iPhone 3.0 Software Update for iPod touch will deliver new features that make watching video, playing games, and listening to music even more fun.

...which kinda implies that the iPod for sale doesn't come with the latest software.

Oh, this guy again. I thought that you were done here.

Think again :p

It does not say anything about needing to upgrade to 3.0 when you click "Select" (BTW, there is no "Purchase" button).

Thats because you don't need to upgrade to 3.0

By the way, the button I was referring to is the "Buy Now" button, smart one.

There is an info link about 3.0, but nowhere does it say that the brand new iPod that you are about to purchase does not come with the brand new OS.

Really...don't you think that's inferred buy the offer to purchase 3.0?

Oh, I forgot to ask you Surely, can I post to this thread

Very well said. I couldn't agree more, especially with the bold stuff.

To me, that implies that it is available to iPod Touch owners that purchased before 3.0 was released. I would assume that the newest OS would come with the newest product.

Really...don't you think that's inferred buy the offer to purchase 3.0?

No, I don't.

Oh, I forgot to ask you Surely, can I post to this thread

You don't need my permission to post here. Earlier, you "IMPLIED" that you were done here (Remember: "Have a nice day"). That is why I made that comment. Isn't it interesting that when you aren't clear about your intentions, it is easy for others to misinterpret them? Hmmmmm.......

I think the big issue here is the lack of clarity on Apple's website. This conversation can go on and on.

The main point is, is that if Apple were clearer with the information on this product, we wouldn't be having this conversation in the first place.

Actually I take this as it works for "every iPod Touch" meaning 1G, 2G, etc. That is what Apple usually has to state when they put out new software...for example...only Intel Processors, or 2.26 GHZ, etc.

FOr the ordinar user how are they not supposed to think it comes with 1.0+? What tells them it even has 2.0 on it? Come on everyone- we have several Mac Rumors members who say it is confusing and all- imagine the millions of ordinary users who have no clue- they see ads showing cut/paste, etc. and buy a touch and it has an old OS on it.

I think the main point of this thread is Apple should at the VERY LEAST be clear what OS comes on the touch...they are with MacBooks, MacBook pros, iMacs, and every other product they sell....just do it for the Touch!

Now what did General Patton say about ASSUME?

No, I don't.

Well, sorry about that but I think it's pretty clear. If they offer to sell you something then it obviously doesn't come on the product your looking at.

Just being polite

They are perfectly clear. By their offer to sell you 3.0 right on the purchase webpage they're saying that the iPod you're looking at doesn't come with 3.0.

Now what did General Patton say about ASSUME?

When something is "kinda" implied, it involves the reader attempting to make an assumption based on the implication.

Well, sorry about that but I think it's pretty clear

Think about what you are doing. You are apologizing on behalf of a corporation and their marketing practices. You really don't see anything weird about that? Fan-boy Apple-zombie much?

They are perfectly clear. By their offer to sell you 3.0 right on the purchase webpage they're saying that the iPod you're looking at doesn't come with 3.0.

Circles. Circles.

It doesn't say anywhere that 3.0 doesn't come with any of the new iPods. That link could be for current iPod Touch owners.

The bottom line is that if Apple were "perfectly clear", there wouldn't be this many people confused. I'm very highly educated, and I find it unclear.

If they were perfectly clear, this thread and others like it would never have been created. There wouldn't be any questions as to why newly purchased iPods don't come with the new OS.

If they really wanted to be perfectly clear, they would put the OS that the iPod actually comes with on that website.

At this point, I think you're just trolling. I think I've fed you enough.

Actually they are not "saying" anything by offering something...if in fact they were "saying" it they would actually be stating it in words....the above quote is an ASSUMPTION.

I bet in September they still have that link there on that page even AFTER they update the iPod Touch to 3.0 in shipping units.

I agree assumptions are not the best thing to follow- so Apple just needs to be clear and state what OS something is running...because I assumed that my replacement iPod I got the other day would be 2.0 since I brought in a 2.0 defective iPod...but it wasn't- they replaced it with a 1.0 version! Guess I won't assume anymore huh!

Now come on, I haven't resorted to calling you any names.

That link could be for current iPod Touch owners.

On the purchase page for a new iPod? Huh???

I'm very highly educated, and I find it unclear.

Really? In what might I inquire? My personal background is mechanical engineering at Berkeley.

At this point, I think you're just trolling. I think I've fed you enough.

More name calling... I think I'm outta here.

I don't blame you on the name calling- I was called an idiot earlier in the thread...he/she is in time-out right now...anyway, I don't think Surely was saying you weren't highly educated, just that someone who is highly educated (I have two BA's and a MA and lots of extra hours which didn't go towards either) could get confused if they didn't pay close enough attention or didn't have enough time to hit these message boards the way we folks do!:D

Assumptions are not usually good practice in marketing...making your product offerings clear is a good practice...unless you are selling ShamWow's late night!:D
