If the design is unchanged with just internals upgraded, I'll be sitting on the sidelines for this cycle and sticking with my 3GS.

When Apple figures out that glass is an absolutely awful material to use for phone construction, I'll be back on board. I need a phone to be durable, like the 3G/3GS form-factor was -- not something that shatters when dropped from 3 feet.

Its really sad to see sooooo many iPhone 4 owners that want a incremental upgrade and same design for iPhone 5.... Wishing the iPhone 5 is less tempting so your iPhone 4 can still look new is NOT a good way for apple to advance and keep its superiority in the cellphone market...

I'm hoping for a least a slight redesign... AND pleeeaassseee a larger screen with the same resolution... a little less then 326ppi will not be noticeable and only make a 4 inch screen look better

The iPhone 4 does not shatter when dropped from 3 feet.

That's good to know so I can plan to make the move to Android sooner rather than later. I don't like the small display for reading as well as typing. Must have been made for people with small fingers. I was hoping the iPhone 5 would finally move to a 4" display, but I guess not so (unless that would fit in the same case?)

Upgrade from 3G

I'm still rocking my 3G so this will be a great upgrade. It has become impossible to use some of the vanilla apps such as maps so I'd just be happy with a zippy iOS device.

Also the 3G->3GS was a pretty major upgrade, spec wise, just not an external one. I think every upgrade has been a major one for different reasons and I expect the iPhone 5 to be no different. It may be a hardware feature exclusive to the device or it may be something it can only do with iOS5.

PEOPLE: iPhone 3G to 3GS was NOT and incremental upgrade... it was actually MORE of an upgrade then the iPhone 1st Gen to 3G....

1st to 3G--added GPS, 3G, Design

3G to 3GS--faster processor, more ram, from 2 to 3 megapixel camera with video recording with touch to focus and adding a 32gb version

Give me a bigger screen! Also, I'm tired of Apple's obsession with thinness. Currently, the iPhone 4 is too small. For me, my case is more to add size than for protection.

I'm on the same boat as you. My iPhone 3G was fine until the iOS 4 upgrade, I can't wait to get my hands on the latest technology after using this phone for nearly 3 years. It's as slow as a turtle now even after i jailbroke it.

Don't bother explaining how 3G to 3GS was a big update, i've done enough and people still don't seem to understand. *facepalm*

Btw, i take it that you're a Halo fan by your name?

I wonder if they are going to incorporate a carbon fiber backing.

Or even that new glass-like aluminum material thats been popping around that's supposed to be uncrackable @ 1mm thin.

Imagine that.. A carbon fiber back with black aluminum front..
+ dual core A5, 1Gb ram, 64-128gb storage..

I just pee'd a little.

Other things need bumps..

8mp camera

No. This will make image quality at normal print sizes worse. You're cramming 8 million pixels in a tiny sensor area. 5 million is more than enough. Bigger pixels will lead to less noise and better low light performance.

If anything, they should make the sensor bigger with the same pixel count.

ok,I accept it. . .but I would like to see a thinner design ,that's all(minimum requirement),thinner = more sexy ,that's why sony erricson arc so many people like it , because it slimmer than iphone 4

there have been 4 phones, with 3 completely different designs

Can you honestly tell me that all four generations look "completely different"?

Well ok, not the front of the device, as thats the (arguably) iconic design element that allows people to instantly recognise the product - and so will likely never change, or at least not for a while.

But the rest of the design has differed a fair bit, but externally and internally - albeit not "completely".

I predict iPhone 5 sales will be 5 million in the first 4 days.

Hi Gene

Here's how it works:

If you didn't upgrade it was a 'minor' upgrade.

If you did upgrade, it was 'major'.

If you're <15 years old, unless it's a completely new design and gui, it's 'fail' because no matter how elegantly it does the job your ADD prevents you from using the device for more than 6 months without losing interest.

clear?

If I were Jobs, I would do the following to the iPhone 5:

1) It would look at first glance like the iPhone 4 but will have a slightly curved back made of Liquid Metal.
2) Have a completely reconfigured antenna design that is not susceptible to the "grip of death" signal loss.
3) Offer a true 4" (diagonal) IPS LCD screen but keep the same resolution for improved readability.
4) Use the same A5 CPU/GPU as on the iPad 2 with 512 MB of system RAM.
5) Offer in 16 and 32 GB versions initially, with a 64 GB version available late fall 2011.
6) Offer a low-profile adapter that plugs into the 30-pin doc connector so it could do near-field communications (NFC) for things like mobile payment systems commonly used in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong.

You don't know how close you are to being right.

The iphone five will be all aluminum, similar design to iphone 4 with a 4 inch screen or slightly less.

Have a A5 chip, different antenna design than iphone 4 at least GSM version.

I held the iphone 5 screen in my hand that was leaked on the internet. It was a genuine foxconn part. My guess that it is the real deal.

So the bits that have changed are the bits that 95% of people hide within a 3rd party cover?!

The thing I hate most about my 3GS (and why I didn't get a 4 and looks like I won't get a 5) is that, when you're in a pub or something, and everyone's iPhones are sitting on the table, it is pretty much impossible to tell them apart. Only last week I picked-up a friend's 1st gen thinking it was my 3GS. Even the message and email tones are all the same. The number of times I've heard my phone go off but it's turned out to be some other guy's on the next table.

The 1st iPhone was a massive leap forward in mobile phones that has undoubtedly rocked the industry, but the fact that Apple keep churning out the same design makes me think they have no new ideas and it was a bit of a fluke.

Assuming you really are the dudeman, how do you know that back would be aluminum when you held the screen?

FYI, the screen can't reach 4" without serious squeezing of the home button and pushing the speaker to the very top.
