Verizon iphone owner here. They don't need to change the form factor at all. The people expecting them to after how successfull the 4 has been (and it hasnt even been a year) are crazy. I came from Android, the original Motorola Droid. IMO the processor spec bump and maybe slightly bigger screen are all they need to focus on hardware wise. The biggest thing they need to fix is the notification system (it doesnt even compare w/Android), and add more customizable ring tones/message tones. Apple has nailed the user interface/experience, so allow us to give the phones a little personality without having to jailbreak it.

You really think they will call the fifth iPhone an iPhone 4something? The only reason why they did that with the 3GS is because it was actually the third iPhone and it would have been weird to call it the iPhone 3 when the last one was the iPhone 3G.

I had't though about the name, but that does make sense. I was referencing to the type of update. ie I think we will be getting a 3G to 3GS update rather than a 3GS to 4 type of update.

Here me out on this one.

When I read "basically the same form factor as the iPhone 4" one thing comes to mind, the 3G to 3GS.

Think about it, the iPhone 3G had a new form from the previous generation model. Amazingly, Apple used virtually the same exact form of the iPhone 3G for the 3GS with only the physical noticeable exception of the 'all silver' information on the rear of the device. Shouldn't we be thinking that Apple is going to do this all over again with the "iPhone 4S"?

Promotional images...

Hummm... they say "promotional images". They look like horribly done ones at that. The thickness seems bulky and the dimensions are not consistent. It looks out of proportion to me and like an amateurish rendering.

So... given that, I don't think we can determine much of anything other than it's an iPhone case.

I do think the iPhone 5 will be a significant internal update to the current design. Why?

  • Gives 3rd party people another year with current accessories.
  • The current design is great.
  • Significant overall design changes take longer than a year.

The best part... even the iPhone 4 customers (like myself) will get an upgrade with the iPhone 5. We'll get iOS 5 and I'm sure there's going to be some nice goodies in iOS 5.

In all... with iPad 2, iPhone 5, iOS 5, Lion, and surely some iPod updates in the fall and I'm guessing an update to AppleTV, this is going to be a banner year for Apple. Hot, on top of Hot, on top of Hot, on top of Hot... :)

My guess is you are basically correct.

My 3GS contract (unlimited Data) is up this summer. So I am waiting for the iPhone 5 to come out with the dual core A5 chip and slightly better camera. I am also happy no NFC because i really don't trust that technology. Heck people have already hacked RFIDs at Gas pumps. So the NFC technology will be hacked literally within a day it comes out.

I am just hoping Apple will go with a metal back instead of glass, as an option.

I have a feeling we are going to be seeing an iPhone 4S and an iPhone 5. Just a hunch. For me personally if the iPhone 5 doesn't have a larger screen I'm out. I know it's not for everyone but for me it makes a huge difference.

Same. Want the bigger screen yet same form factor (or slightly slimmer).

I used to disparage people who wants a larger screen like that seen in the Droid X, but having use the iPhone for the last several months: I must admit that on a few apps the iPhone could use a larger screen. A 4 inch screen is probably ideal. However, I'm also torn still with this idea. A 3.5 inch iPhone is easier to carry in your pocket than say the Galaxy S which is a bit too bulky.

Hehe, a while back I was talking to an owner of an Android based phone. He told me that bought it over the iPhone strictly because it had a bigger screen and that he loves it. Five minutes latter he was telling me that he hated the phone because it was too big. I think he wanted a 10" screen in a 3" package.

Could iPhone 5 use 4G data and change name to 4G? Leave iPhone 5 'til next year (and maybe use decimal iOS bumps until iOS next year?

I'm getting a white iPhone 5 and having the antenna gold plated. I know I know...it'll look ridiculous.

Also, LOL@ all the people who want the iPhone to turn into some HTC type plastic rectangle. I can't stand those form factors. Where's the design? Where's the damned passion people!!?

If you have your teeth capped in gold rapper style it all matches. Done!

PS: Give your dentist a 2 year contract!

These cases look like a scam they use a "Escrow" buyer protection system, most of which are fake systems and they only accept direct money transfers such as PayPal. 99% sure these cases are an attempt by a scammer for a quick money grab.

The screen looks weird in that mock up, proportionately. I recon if they make it wider they have to make it longer too.... anyone remember the hand gesture rumor, which suggested they're getting rid of the home button? that would be cool, either way i'm getting one.....

Just get here already! My 3gS is on its last leg!

How so? It's held up remarkably well for me, the one exception being the camera (functional but not up to today's standards). I'm one of those who disagree with it having been a "minor" update, and bet it could handle whatever iOS5 throws far better than the 3G did with iOS4. Specs ensure better longevity.

I keep seeing people say, iPhone 5 will just be the iPhone 4S as if that is a bad thing. I don't know about you guys, but as a user of both the 3G and 3GS, the speed difference between the 3G and 3GS was huge for me. It was much better. The iPhone 4 is a great phone, but I'm sure even an iPhone 4S will still be much sweeter.

I'm still holding out hope that the iPhone 5 will indeed be the iPhone 4G, as the naming works out great, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll still be happy with the iPhone 4S.

And all of us Verizon customers were absolute idiotsmfor buying iPhone 4s because the iPhone 5 was supposed to be an earth-shattering upgrade. I'm guess it's more like the iPhone 4gs. :) It'll get the iPads new processor, better graphics capability and not much else.

if all you care about is design,yes,it's more like ip4.But,I'm guessing A5,double the storage,maybe a bigger screen(not that I'd care),camera improvements,and??
Not Earth shattering, but nice combined with iOS 5.
But I don't think people were idiot for getting the iPhone either.

Of course iPhone 5 will be basically same as iPhone 4 same as iPad 1 and 2. Few little tweaks here and there and apple nerds go mad. Love apple stuff but too sensible to get hooked on this never ending upgrade thing
