A mixed bag of yay and nay's.

I'm still undecided. I wouldn't get the black/grey whatever it is, I currently have the white 5, and I'm not sure if the gold is too bling is it? So is probably get the same colour as well, although the cost has gone up, so not sure on squeezing down from my current 32Gb to a 16Gb.

My contract I'm in from my S3 was a 24month and runs until next year June time, so is probably good for the 6 next year.

When it boils down its the scanner and flash, and speed added. Speed is good on 5, camera looks better, and more convenient in the default camera app. The scanner is the thing, it's annoying with the pass code....

Just say no to the 5S.

You'll be happy you did, when less than a year later Apple releases iPhone 6, a phone that will be far superior to anything Apple's done thus far.

So how £ much exactly are we talking about here? Is it £300 or like £150?

I too was also wondering if the gold is too bling bling but will need to see it first before deciding. Could get a thin case this time that doesn't cover the buttons to show some of the gold but not too much.

Personally I think the scanner is something that once you get accustomed to, you'll find it ancient and annoying to go back to the passcode.
It's something android will do very soon too, be it in a home button or screen but every phone will have it IMO.

Also if you use the nike run app you'll benefit from the new chip as it will add extra features.

Q.If you have a 5,have saved some money,would you get 5S?

I'll get the 6 anyway next year as I think it'll be decent upgrade so that's a defo.

Price wise I will sell my 5 32Gb either on here or work, and not sure wether to get the 32Gb or got 16Gb for some money saving.

I'm thinking having to add around £250.

Agree on the scanner, all phones will eventually get it

I will get an iphone 6 if it gets a bigger screen as I think that will be the last change in screen size for the iphone.

I have an iPhone 5 and have not even considered uprgrading to the 5S. I'm going to hold out for the iPhone 6. My iPad 3 upgraded to an iPad 5 might be more tempting.

I'm in the same boat with having the iPhone 5 and iPad 3. I had planned on upgrading both this fall. But the new iPhone 5S features just don't wow me. The only feature that I really like is the larger aperture on the camera. The other features are just meh for me.

Now I'm trying to patiently wait for the new iPad. My 3 is great but I will trade up for a differnet style - maybe it'll be thinner and/or lighter.

There is nothing WOW in the 5S, but the scanner convenience and what they might so for it over the year might be interesting, also the camera looks good.

I have an iPad 2 and although I'd like the new iPad 5, I don't really think there's much over the iPad 2. Yes faster, better display but I use it in the house all the time anyway, and its getting iOS7 so might miss this time, I use my iPhone all the time, and so have an iMac in the house to.

Surely whether to upgrade or not depends a lot on what you use your phone for. Personally, in my work, the camera is crucial. I take lots of product photos and enlarge so camera improvements are the biggie for me. However, for those not too bothered with the photography end of things, upgrading probably a waste

I sure am upgrading. I have no reason not to. When you think about how much time you spend on the phone, it's well worth any cost.

That's how much I'm looking probably at upgrading, got a 1 month old iPhone 5 locked though to EE. Reckon I can get £300 for it.

£250 is what I'll need, only thing that hesitates me is that I could have a iPad mini for the same price .... But then again like you say further down we use our phones all the time. I'd like to start actually using more of the new features like the camera slo mos and burst shots to make it worth it though...

I'm going to reserve my buying to see if I can get £300 or above then ill get one otherwise Ill hang into it and try see ios7 as an upgrade within itself

I am in the same boat as the OP but im thinking of committing a blasphemy. Xperia z1 looks awesome and im thinking of joining the dark side for a year till the iphone 6 comes out :p

I have 4S and will get 5S. There's just not enough difference to upgrade every year so I go every two years which works out well with the carrier subsidy.

Agree, it's just sometimes I'm a sucker! Agree this time that there seems to be less of an upgrade? I think even if I do upgrade to the 5S that I won't miss the 6 cycle either as will be a decent change though

As I tell friends, the way to know if you should buy the newest phone is this.

1. Can you afford it?

2. Do you always need the latest tech or does your older phone still do everything you need it to do?

If you answer both truthfully you know what you should do

1) yes

2) yes

so where does that leave me #

You are leaning towards a purchase and made a thread to justify it. Enjoy your new iPhone!

Ha ha, nope just asking opinions. Would depend on selling price of my 32Gb 5 still some warranty until end of Dec. I'd want >£400, some seem to be going a lot less so that would be a factor.

Have you decided?

I'm still thinking iphone5 + ipad mini vs iphone5s :(

Haven't really yet, as supplies are going to be short I'll probably pop into an Apple store and see them in the flesh, and then probably buy one! Ha ha.

Keep thinking that's there's not much over my current 5 really.

That's a good combo you have in mind there tho, kids have an iPad mini and they are great.

In exactly the same boat - and leaning towards the iPad mini and iP5. I don't own my own iPad at the moment, and one would be great for ebooks and taking notes. However, would really have to be retina display as it would mostly be a reading device.

If I didn't have a 5 or a mini and that as choice over a 5S I'd personally go for a 5 + mini. The 5S is the 5 with a scanner really.

Regarding the retina, would be great to have but I think the kids' mini now is great, there will be loads for sale on classifieds here probably soon if the retina did come out.

So you're one of those that only cares of whats on the outside, not the inside.

Got it.

Are you aware that the jump from 4S to 5 in processing speed was pretty much the same as between 5 to 5S basically 2X CPU and 2X GPU. 4 to 4S was much bigger in terms of processing power (single core to dual core, 5X GPU). Even 3GS was 3X the performance of the 3G

Apple would make it seem that this is the biggest jump of the iPhones, and yes, certainly is the one that is adding more raw power, but proportionally it is the smallest one of the "S" series when comparing with the previous gen.

64 bit is just future proofing and don't think we will see any advantages during this generation. Only if you care about the camera should really upgrade, which I don't. Touch ID seems very convinient but I wouldn't buy a 5S just for it.

Still I'll get the 5S and sell my 5 as I have done with any generation before, but only because I can basically sell my 5 for pretty much the same I can get a new 5S unlocked from the states (don't know why resell value of used iPhones is stupidly high in my country), but this is frankly the least excited I have ever been for an iPhone hardware upgrade.

Generally speaking, if your decision to buy a new phone hinges upon have 'saved some money' in order to afford it, buying a new phone should probably be a lot lower on your priority list.
