Generally speaking, if your decision to buy a new phone hinges upon have 'saved some money' in order to afford it, buying a new phone should probably be a lot lower on your priority list.

Nah it's not like that, it's just a little account, put a little away to pay credit card etc, but all paid up at mo as got iMac on 0% from Apple last Xmas that's all

No sir no way. Keep the iPhone 5. Keep your saved money or go spend it on your wife. The 5s is not worth it if you have a 5. Do your upgrade when 6 comes out. If money wasn't a question then of course get the latest and greatest. But seriously think about sitting next to someone with a 5s and think to yourself am I jealous? Doubt you will be if you got a 5.

Depends what kind of things you need to pay for. At the moment, I'm lucky enough to only have to buy what I want, not what I need - food, housing etc is all paid for.

However, I don't have any 'income' per se so earn bits and bobs here and there doing baby sitting, cleaning, gardening etc.
Saved £400 over the past year, which is obviously a small amount of money in the grand scheme of things but would impact upon a decision like this.

Obviously it all comes down to personal preference and individual needs.

I say 'needs' because for the majority of people the upgrade from 5 to 5S is more of a 'want'. Ultimately, we all have to decide if this want is worth the cost.

However, in my case the move from 5 to 5S is more of a necessity. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but I travel abroad quite often and I need the extra built-in wireless bands in the iPhone 5S.

To me, that alone justifies the upgrade. The 5S now supports more bands than any other iPhone, making it the first true "world" iPhone. If I'm paying for a 4G-capable iPhone, why would I want to limit myself to no 4G every time I go to Europe (which was the case with my Verizon iPhone 5)?

That's why I'm switching from iPhone 5 to 5S. The new camera, processor, and other enhancements are all nice upgrades, but not my priority.

I agree on a lot, especially the above comment on its a "want" not a "need" defo. The 5 is a great phone.

To justify it though I really need to sell my 5 at a decent price, and on AVf they are dropping, so may have to sell elsewhere.

Still undecided, would like one, not sure on stock, not sure wether to just order one online on release at 12:01am Fri anyway...?... Looking forward to getting iOS7 so that might make me want it more...or less as in the 5 is great with iOS7.

Because the prospect of a $10k roaming bill does not appeal to you?

Nope, I'll keep my iphone 5 and wait for the 6 gen iphone, now I'm lookig forward to the new rmbp and ipad mini ( hoping for retina screen :D ) :)

You must not travel much. It's 2014, not 2004.

I toured Europe for 3 weeks last month. Visited 6 countries and drove through several others. My Verizon iPhone 5 was in use the entire time. With the $30 global feature, I used my data everywhere and made more phone calls than I can remember.

The bill came to $278. This included over 500 mb of used data. It's not nearly as bad as people imagine. It's certainly not cheap, but it's no $10k either.

Times change.

Cool, I guess the new directives regarding data roaming do actually work, then. A few years back a business trip to London with no wifi available netted me a 6000€ phone bill. Haven't been using data roaming abroad ever since.

In exactly the same boat - and leaning towards the iPad mini and iP5. I don't own my own iPad at the moment, and one would be great for ebooks and taking notes. However, would really have to be retina display as it would mostly be a reading device.

Yeah retina others my choice will be easy.

A whole year of inputting security codes, great pictures but could be better and No Slow Mos! ( not like I really depends on these features lol but they pretty neat.) If the 5 had burst shot and slow mos then I think I'd settle for it.

Haven't really yet, as supplies are going to be short I'll probably pop into an Apple store and see them in the flesh, and then probably buy one! Ha ha.

Keep thinking that's there's not much over my current 5 really.

That's a good combo you have in mind there tho, kids have an iPad mini and they are great.

Yip I too will have to go test some features and see the gold in person before deciding...

The features I mentioned above interest me over the 5.

Only good thing about the mini is that it will push me to start reading more for work which I've been slacking on...and handy having one laying around.

Decisions! - would like both really ...

Q.If you have a 5,have saved some money,would you get 5S?

Seen the gold in person in an Apple store, it's much better than the pictures as I think everyone is saying. The pictures make it look too bright, whereas it's a nice colour, the sides look great.

I'm now thinking of ordering a gold rather than the silver/white which I have on my 5....

We have 4 phones on our plan with staggered upgrade dates, so we basically get a new phone every 6 months. I always take the new phone and just pass the others down. If I was on a plan by myself, I probably would've waited for the 6.

Any verdict bud?

I've seen now that we can probably get around £300 for our iPhones (mines 1 month old but locked) so I'm swaying more toward a mini instead.

Did have a play around with the 5s ...

Would be wanting more than £300 for my 32Gb. There's still 3 month warranty left to.

Ordered a Gold 32Gb, who knows when will come though tbh, still time to change my mind...

I have an iPad 2, now got iOS7 on and tbh don't see that I'll need a iPad 5 as does everything I need really, whereas my iPhone I use a lot lot more, and better to sell now for better resale on my 5 I think?

I did. Sold my 64GB 5 for $650. Only problem is now I'm stuck waiting for my unlocked 5S to arrive in 2+ weeks while using a (gasp!) Galaxy S2.

I honestly hadn't planned on upgrading this year but when the TouchID rumour panned out to be true, I went with it, being in IT/security and all.

At the end of the day, it's an incremental update that may not warrant using early upgrade fees but it's got enough to make it enticing.

I sold my tmobile 5 16gb for $375 and bought a 5S new in box from CL for $600 - everything checked out at the Tmobile store so I ended up only spending $225 to upgrade to a:

Newer phone with newer battery (my 5 was starting to die a little quick)
Better camera
Fingerprint sensor for convenience
Faster (and hopefully even more so after the apps are updated to 64bit
New color

So to me it was worth it. Now if I had to spend any more than that I might not have upgraded. The 5 is still an insanely nice and good phone.

I wasn't going to but my finger slipped when I went to buy my husband's phone (he needed more memory) and I "accidentally" bought one for myself. ;)

Now that I have it, I like the fingerprint sensor a lot more than I thought I would, and I look forward to testing the camera out.

I still got 2 months too, let me know how much you end up getting for it.
