apple should paid the Qualcomm . They really need to focus on ios and osx which pretty bad this day.. I would said future "Jack Of all Trade, master of none" .

OT. You're kidding right, both iOS and macOS got better than their predecessors, iOS 12 is both faster and more stable than iOS ever was, macOS 10.14 release was by far the best stable release ever.

As for this case, Qualcomm is de devil here but Apple should also pay was is due.

Agreed. This will cost QC big time from 2021 on out. :apple:

You do realize that for WiFi, Bluetooth and for Cellular, you can't possibly make a chip and not pay Qualcomm?
Or you might be able to, but it would be so inefficient no-one would buy.
Qualcomm and its founder invented the fundamental technology that makes wireless work today.
Things like MIMO and diversity antennas use algorithms for pulling in the signal and reducing the effects of multipath.

When it comes to wireless, whether you like it or not, Qualcomm is most definitely king.

Qualcomm seems petty at this point. Got what they wanted then said no that’s not right either.
Umm, Apple was specifically told to stop selling certain phone models in China by the government, Apple says we'll just release a software update instead to address the issue and continues selling the banned models.

I think Qualcomm has a legitimate complaint here.

In the real world is the opposite. Everyone (and their grandmother) copying Apple.
[doublepost=1545113510][/doublepost]

They already do.
Sorry, Apple has been copying everyone else for a long time now:
  • Touch screen devices that are rectangles with rounded corners - Has been in many movies prior to Apple ever releasing such a device, which makes it prior art and should never have been issued a patent.
  • GUI Interface on computers - Copied from Xerox
  • Face ID - copied from Samsung among others
  • Being able to take video with the iPhone - copied from the Jailbreak community
  • Overall iPhone X design - copied from Samsung Flagship phones

The list goes on and on, but it really is Apple that does the copying, granted the sometimes tweak the features and try to improve them, but they are still a copy.

If it's up to me all software patents should become illegal, and while they're at it..IP on anything wireless should be banned as well, reason, the internet/Wifi/2/3/4(/5/XG) is ubiquitous, should be regarded the same as water/electricity/utility, one can barely live without it, so it should be (dirt)cheap like other utilities.

Qualcomm just go away you are like a old girlfriend that just can't get the picture that it's over.

In either case - I don’t like the fact that a company can threaten a government to side with them by claiming “they’ll lose tax revenue”.

Patents are to protect companies and need to be enforced.

Not saying Apple is infringing still or not but if they are, I hope they fine Apple and force them to pay licensing fees to Qualcomm.

Not sure this was so much a threat as a wake up and smell the roses statement. The feeling is that China only ruled against Apple as a way to retaliate against the trade war and the arrest of the CFO of Huawei. Not so much because of the merits of the case.
[doublepost=1545155908][/doublepost]
Because they wouldn't be allowed.
Are you sure? Chip manufacturing is not their core business and this would not be seen as a huge consolidation necessarily. Broadcom's main business is chips, Intel might have a hard time buying them, AMD might but Apple is not a chip company, this would be just further integration.

As apple continues to move into communication chips it might become a problem but today I'm not sure it would be blocked.

Well, maybe. But it's China, so they won't enforce it unless Qualcomm agrees to a Chinese takeover.

It was a design patent, the sort of thing to stop counterfeit goods. Samsung copied the original iPhone device so heavily that yes, they were basically considered a counterfeit good :p
  • GUI Interface on computers - Copied from Xerox
And which they licensed/paid for
  • Face ID - copied from Samsung among others
I must have missed Samsung's 3d multi-camera array and dot projector enabled model. Or did you mean that Samsung made a version of the concept that didn't work well, and apple made one that works stellar?
  • Being able to take video with the iPhone - copied from the Jailbreak community

Or maybe Apple "stole" that from 1940s-era video equipment?

They would be getting rid of the main supplier for their competition. It would be anti competitive.

No they weren't. They were enjoined from continued patent infringement.

And? Apple sold 216M at an ASP of $761. What is Huawei's projected ASP?

Apple isn't interested in shipping junk phones for little or no profit.

I'm sure to board members and people that hold apple stock, profit margins are something to gloat about. However this means nothing to the consumer on a budget, especially young people. In terms of junk that may be true in emerging markets among the poor countries, but the phones being shipped to the Americas have impressive specs for the money, hence they are of great value. Only downside is they lack long term support and may include some type of spyware. So, for the high school and college kids on a budget, who love playing battle royal type games, social media and taking pictures, a 400 dollar Chinese phone is a lot more appealing than a thousand dollar phone. Sacrificing profit margins to become #1 long term seems to be their goal. Especially when their government gives them subsidies.

iOS and macOS , last year , finally got some loving from a performance point of view . I have to admin that it was a great move . My worry is that next few releases, we will go back to poor performance and bugs , chasing crap gimmicks.

Technology is about copying someone's idea and making it better.

Of course - and that is the reality . Apple has been doing it for decades , and are very good at it.

It’s only thier die hard fans that live in a reality distortion field that believe Apple invents everything , kudos to clever apple marketing!

Except that Apple were paying HUGE fees already. Hence why apple are sung Qualcomm because they were charging Apple twice.

Great user name, it fits you.
Broadcom couldn't buy Qualcomm for 146 billion and they would have probably offered even more but in the end the deal was blocked by the US authorities.
To put it simple, Apple can't buy Qualcomm even if it wants to.

A direct copy? LoL

Yes, a direct copy! Android just went a different path to iOS but it still was direct copy. period!
[doublepost=1545178389][/doublepost]
I was about to post the same thing, this is absolutely typically Apple behaviour, so far as they are concerned they are above the law unless it’s benefiting them.

I hope the Chinese courts find them in contempt and fine them. It’s like when here in the UK they were forced to publically apologise for its false case against Samsung, they first made an apology that was hidden on there website, and attempted to claim the UK court was out of touch with the rest of the world and that Samsung tablets were ‘not as cool’ as the iPad. Naturally the court did not find this amusing in the slightest, quickly found Apple to not have complied with their ruling and ordered them to do it again and I think pay all of Samsung’s legal fees.

Anyway it’s just an example of how Apple desrepects word courts unless it benefits them or they face massive charges or fines.

Next year we will have the conclusion of the French court investigation into the slowdown of the iPhones and the US Senate will be probing them in January, plus all the other cases. In Italy both they and Samsung have been fined for misleading consumers about their forced slowing down of devices, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens in France where it’s actually a crime to do that. Can’t wait to see Apples arrogance that countries courts.

Easy to always blame Apple for everything and never blame any other company for anything such as Samsung been found guilty of copying.

Question: Why is anyone paying any attention to the facts of the case? I'm sure people (maybe not everyone) know the law in China and court decisions change to suit on what The Party had decided on. The Party is upset at the free world over Huawei, so they're going to make up some trumped up charges against US firms. Apple and Qualcomm are both American, except Apple actually sources through Chinese suppliers (including the nominally-Taiwanese outsourcing firms that actually operate entirely in China) and contributes to the Chinese economy. What's Qualcomm done for The Party lately? The whole thing is overblown and irrelevant...

You do realise you quoted my post where I stated Apple AND Samsung were fined, then replied claiming everyone blames Apple and not Samsung right? You do appreciate the irony here?
And Apple is usually the villain that usually only wins in American courts, the rest of the world doesn’t believe rounded corners are an exclusive Apple feature...

"Oh, what now Qualcomm" *rolls eyes*

Apple complied with the software update, and Qualcomm is still not happy. As in,,"A feature" present in iOS 12 devices, but not in previous ones because Apple had to remove it... Chinese will be asking questions now, "My phone is not the same as yours" Well, yes it is, but in a 'different' way.

Apple gets to stand by their trademark slogan yet again

So wrong.

Apple got determinations that Samsung infringed its patents in many courts including South Korea, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, etc.

And the design patent was not about round corners. It was about the overall design.

Qualcomm is clearly trying to make Apple appear desperate in the hopes that Apple will agree to a speedy court resolution, to the extent of suing Apple for matters completely unrelated to their cellular patents.

Given the highly questionable behavior coming from Qualcomm’s CEO in terms of saying a settlement with Apple is near (it's not), Qualcomm seems increasingly worried.

It’s precisely in times like this that Apple needs to stay the course. Apple will get their chance to retaliate soon enough, and he who laughs last laughs the best.

Haha it was about an oblong with round corners in a picture that looked like a 6 year old drew it. And I’m right they only mainly won in the US. Oh and I also believe they claimed Samsung copied the colours black and white.... Or the slide to unlock patent blindly giving to Apple by the US patent office which is now being revoked, due to prior art and basically Apple not being first to market with it.
But you carry on believing all the Apple BS it spreads in court whilst attempting to get its main competitor banned from all of its markets. You believe Apple when it’s business model is to refuse to pay licesene fees to save money and pays just when it’s about to go to court, like with Ericsson. Apple has pulled so much BS over the years purely to cut costs it’s sad really. So don’t expect an ounce of sympathy from me when they are the ones in accused box.
