I wish Android would stop using Qualcomm. Give it to Intel or something. Not that they're better, just Qualcomm's too shady IMO.

This is all tied together. The FRAND patent dispute is based on Qualcomm’s licensing behavior, which is also what was at issue in the government inquiries that Qualcomm was pissed Apple was cooperating with (and hence withheld the rebates). It’s all part of the same situation where Qualcomm is trying to charge license fees for using chips it sells.
Yes, it's a part of the same overall situation, but it is an entirely separate issue from the two trials. I'm sure you could easily gather from the context of realturner's quote that he was conflating the trials with this issue. There were no "legal experts" claiming Qualcomm was right about this issue. As I said earlier, I doubt many even knew about this particular issue, cuz it definitely hasn't been widely covered like the trial.

To me it seems Petty in the Grand Scheme of Things.
In the grand scheme of things, Apple will drop Qualcomm altogether once it has successfully designed its own modems, and Qualcomm will be reduced to scrounging for loose change amongst Chinese OEMs, which in turn affects its ability to innovate.

It’s not hard to see how this is just the first of many dominos to fall in Qualcomm’s disfavour.

Intel modems, at least in current gen iPhones, are about as good as Qcom. iPhone XS & XSmax support Intel 4x4 MIMO and are basically on parity with Qcom modems.
Exactly. The XMM7560 has very respectable performance. It is on par. QCOM fans try insinuate the performance difference hasn't changed since earlier iPhone revisions with Intel modems. Or they tell you: "No, it still sucks. Look at this chart ..." If someone has to use a chart and statistics to tell you a well performing machine really sucks that tells you about all you need to know.

Don't worry, Samsung and Huawei have their own SoC with integrated modems. Once QCOM's licensing anomalies are sorted out snapdragon will only be used by lower tiered Android phones.

Apple should just buy Qualcomm already.

You think the shareholders will go for that? To take over Qualcomm based on their current stock price, it'll cost them upwards of a $100B (mkt cap is almost 70B, so 100B is actually low). Is that a smart investment? Would you do it if you were Tim Apple? And why?

Remember, folks, this has nothing to do with the modem issue. Apple is just throwing shade at Qualcomm instead of fessing up to its crimes and paying every penny it owes to an actual innovative company, which Apple is not.
Yawn. Yeah, a billion dollars of “shade” - and Apple is the criminal? - LOL. Apple not being innovative is even funnier.

Intel modems are not on par with Qualcomm modems. They’re just not. Qualcomm’s 5G modems are going to separate them from Intel even further. They will have their 2nd generation, 7nm 5G modem (X855) in devices before Intel releases its 1st generation, 10 nm modem (XMM 8160).

Riiiight. And that's why the judge effectively sided with Apple.
Your emotions are showing.

40 Comments, and All I see is Qualcomm being too Shady?

The more I read the more I see Qualcomm has a case. The *only* argument I agree is Qualcomm is charging slightly too much on its patents. ( And patents only, not on its modem ) Which is a dispute that requires to be solved in court.

And It is another sight to see why some Android Fans absolutely hate Apple Fans. Some of them just decide to defend Apple no matter what.

“Small” company goes up against huge juggernaut company and loses. What a surprise.

Apple should just say to Qualcomm. We will waive the $1 billion if you supply us with 5G chips at a decent price. Hopefully this holds then maybe some leverage.

Well, if the final ruling will be this way, then it really went tits up for Qualcomm. Nice kick in the goolies, ouch :)

Will you be my first client? I promise to do law stuff really well. :)

I have recently watched My Cousin Vinny, so I may also qualify :)

Exactly, just sell the modem at fair price.

Yeah respectable performance for 2016 while Qualcomm's current X24 LTE and 5G modems are way ahead of anything Intel has.

Not only that but Intel's first gen 5G modem doesn't look to be in good shape either. So late and inferior.
https://9to5mac.com/2019/03/05/apple-iphone-5g-trouble/

Apple’s first option, Cowen wrote, is to “launch 18 months after 5G competition with an inferior modem from Intel likely without mmWave capabilities,” referring to the band of spectrum that can be used for 5G’s high-speed wireless communications.

So you’re saying that current Intel modems in current Apple hardware aren’t as good as Qcom now because of what will happen later. Interesting “logic.” Maybe instead you can base your argument on things like download bitrates and signal acquisition rather than The Future.

You mean the Qualcomm company that would charge 1.5% of the sales-price of the product for it's innovative patents that it allowed to be used in the RF standards. So, if it is a car then Qualcomm should get $600 for it's patents, instead of few cents.

No they are not, Qualcomm's current X24 LTE modem is clearly better so we can exclude 5G no problem and Qualcomm is still ahead.
Also Qualcomm has been using 4x4 MIMO tech since their X12 LTE modem.
If a direct comparison is made Qualcomm's modems will definitely win most of time against Intel's modems. This is why people say that Qualcomm's modems are better. Qualcomm's modem doesn't have to win 100% of the time to be better.

There’s no logic in this post that refutes the post quoted. Only some opinions.
