i have no idea how to do that as i have only had my first mac a G4 about 10 days ago and i liked mac so much i went out and bought a G5 .

Why oh why did i do it , i have been asking my self so much over the last few days.

Anyway sorry the disks are 10.4.2 power mac G5 grey disk with a apple logo at the top.

After that im stuffed

Simply run Software Update on the G4 to bring it up to the latest updates. To check for updates simply click :apple: --> Software Update and follow the instructions.

Just as a quick check, could you post the full specs of your G5?

I'm pretty sure that disk is intended for the late 2005 Dual Core/Quad Core G5s. I'm not necessarily sure if it would work correctly with an earlier G5(Intell would likely know).

I heard my name. Only the 2005 model PowerMac G5 shipped with 10.4.2. If that is the version on those discs, they can only be used with one of those models. However, they will still boot any PowerPC Mac and properly format the internal drive. It is only when attempting to install with those discs on the incorrect model will an error appear.

Don't give up yet. Once we get you up and running, you will never want to use anything but OS X.

The first five digits of the serial number. You can find it on the little sticker just inside the bottom edge of where the side panel slots in. Not the whole thing, just the first five digits.

Hi guys ,

just had an idea what about if i pull the hard drive out of my G4 and put it in my G5 just to see if the G5 work's.

PowerMac G4s use an ATA/IDE hard drive where as the G5s use a SATA hard drive. Without an adapter it would not work. However if you have a FireWire cable you can put the G4 in Target Disk Mode and start the G5 that way.

You have a 2005 G5. Those discs will work in it. As long as the G4's OS is 10.4.3 or newer, you can use that. You'll have to remove the optical drive and put the G4's hard drive where it was. Only do that until you get a working SATA drive in the G5. Then put the G4 drive back in the G4 and reinstall the G5's optical drive.

sitting inside the G5 is was this card with 2 IDE cables coming off it , so i am thinking if i use this it SHOULD work .finger crossed.

Buy a FireWire 400 wire, and connect it to both computers. Put the G5 into Target Disk Mode by starting it up while holding the T key. You should see a moving FireWire logo on the G5. Go to your G4, and open Disk Utility. You should see a FireWire drive. Simply format that drive from there, and see if you can install OS X on the G5 then.

I suggest trying to not use that card at first. Instead work on getting the G5 running off of its SATA drive. That card is a PCI card and will not fit in a late-2005 G5's PCI-e slot.

Or another option that hasn't been suggested yet.

Pull the SuperDrive and plug in the G4 HDD into that since it's IDE.

Intell mentioned that on post #35. Still a good idea, though!

It seems you can post photos again, can you post the one of Disk Utility.

Another alternative:

If the G4 has a good install of Tiger, boot the G5 into target disk mode, use disk utility on the G4 to properly set up the G5 drive, and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the G4 drive onto the G5 drive.

Ok guys sound like a plan.

But there are 2 ide connectors on the back of the super drive can i pull out the drive ,but still leave it connected and plug in the IDE drive out the G4??? would i have to make the G4 drive a slave or cable select using a jumper??

yep i can do photos now as i am use my camera to take pictures no my phone.

I will try and post one of the disk utilities screen so you can see what im going on about .

During the Tiger installation process, open Disk Utility and format your new drive as 'MacOS Extended (Journaled)'. Close Disk Utility and then see if it discovers your hard drive.

Right here go's guys here are pictures of disk Ute's screen on my G5.

You can see that i don't have any options button at all

Just underneath the partition name, click on the drop-down menu that currently says "MS DOS File System" and select "Mac OS Journaled(Extended)" from the list.

I think that when you do that, you may see the "options" button that we've been describing.

I did this from my Macbook Pro, but disk utility in 10.4 should be "close enough."
