For those people who order a new phone every year. What's the motivation of getting the 6s?

I'm not being critical and I know different strokes for different folks but here's what I'm looking at.

932 dollars for a phone that will replace my current phone that is not even a year old yet.

The 6s has some nice features like force touch, and the camera was improved but dropping close to a 1,000 on a phone is shockingly expensive. I know I would offset the cost by selling my current one, but I'm wondering what's the basic motivation for those who do this often.
I work hard and buy what I want with the money I earn.

At one time you could do pretty well selling the old phone on Ebay or Craigslist but in the past couple of years the demand hasn't been as strong on a used iphone. Sites that resale the phones are buying up a lot of the old phones and driving the used prices down. So now paying over $900 for the 128gb 6s and selling the old 128gb 6 in many cases will only bring a little over $300 for the used phone so it still makes you put out about $600. I use to make money selling the old phone and buying the new phone and that's why I did it. Now it cost me money so I don't upgrade as much.
Seriously those were the days. People used to always asks I waste so much money buying a new phone every year, but they never understood that I made an extra $200 year over year for doing this.

Of course nobody can understand that you make money by buying and selling at a loss every year. Because you lose money every year with that plan. Your cost is not your initial subsidized phone cost. You have to add in about $25 a month for the year or even two years. Then you sell at a loss. We all waste money on phones because we like a new phone. The only one making money is the company selling the phones originally.

Well with the two year plan, your paying that $25/month regardless if you don't get a new phone. Why not upgrade and cash in an extra $200?

I just stay on AT&T NEXT 12. I just like to have the new iPhone every year. I've been doing this since '07 and haven't missed a launch yet. Just fun and exciting for me. These NEXT plans are made for people that like upgrading every year.

I bought via Next 12 last year and wasn't sure I was actually going to upgrade this year until the keynote. The fact of the matter is that I would actually use peek and pop quite a bit, so I've renewed my Next.

I buy one every year as well and the old one gets handed off to one of my three kids, the one with the oldest phone. My wife doesn't get a new one every year but that's her doing, but when she does the old one goes into the rotation.
I went to the + this year as I use the phone more at work, self employed electrical contractor. Everything is done by email it seems and specs being sent back and forth for projects puts me on the phone a lot more than I use to be. I have the I pad but it's in the van or not handy when I need it so I hope the added size works out without being to big to carry.

That's why I go with att next. Or Apple upgrade now. Your really just paying $500 something every year for a new phone because you ain't paying it off. It's a lease program.

Motivation is just to have the latest and greatest. I'll sell my 6plus and cover the difference.

makes them feel good about having that latest high profile phone and gets them some attention and importance in their life.

Really? Do you really think people have such low self esteem? Does it make you feel better when you see some one with a new gadget?

Absolute rubbish. I like my tech and I like to have the latest and the greatest with the newest features. I work hard for my money and have the disposable income to pay for the latest devices. Nothing what so ever wrong in that. I don't make a point to tell people overtime I get something new and I don't show off. If anything most people I know are aware I typically upgrade overtime there is a new model and they ask me if I have it and what it's like without me even mentioning it.

Not why I got mine. People I deal and travel with would not know a new iPhone from the old. Just enjoy new tech and have the money to get it.

Your comments seem somewhat bitter;)

This idiot (oneshotpro) is just trying to get a rise out of people. His "contribution" to this thread was far from a contribution. He came here to write a post that holds no value and doesn't answer the OP's question. I could do without people like this. Annoying.

Anyway, I upgrade every year because I love technology. My phone is my most important device and because of that, it's worth it to me to have the newest version. It's the one device that I upgrade consistently. It's all very exciting to me - I wish I could bottle the feeling of setting up a new iPhone and relive it all the time. Haha.

The reason is 2gb of RAM. This phone will be future proof for a while. I could care less about the live pics or whatever, the force touch is cool, and I don't even know what 3d touch is lol. But, the 2gb ram makes this phone last longer. The 6 and 6+ are gonna be very sluggish soon.

I like having the latest toys. But it's getting more and more expensive to do this now. And I am not a fan of forever financing a phone. Just for the privilege of having the latest phone. So this may be the last time I get the new shiny phone, just for the hell of it.

The truth of the matter is I just buy it, it makes me happy so I buy it. I basically just buy whatever I want. You work hard you play hard. Life is short.

There's no rational need to upgrade every year. I saw tourists riding on the cable car in SF just this morning using an iPhone 4S...... I think normal people only upgrade once every 2-3 years.

I sold my 128GB 6 Plus last week on Craigslist and had a little profit left over after paying off my AT&T Next plan.

Honestly, RAM is what's tempting me the most. My current 6 plus makes me want to just smash it into pieces with how often it runs out of memory.

Between that and being able to recover a decent chunk of the cost by selling my 6 plus, it's worth it to me

For OP: If you use the Apple upgrade plan, it is a relatively small monthly payment and you can get a new phone each year. Stop using logic. You only go around once. The best phone around will only cost you about a $1 plus each day. Also, a moderator shouldn't be caught dead using an older phone!

I don't really think that anyone needs to prove to the others why they upgrade every year.

Because I can sell my old phone and get back most of my investment? Because I have money and don't care? Because I want to hand the old phone down to some family members?

It really doesn't matter, as long as you don't break your bank buying a phone. If you do, you have other problems to take care of other than a phone.

I am a busy person and my life depends on my phone.... I conduct 99%business through it and I am rather rough on them. I love technology and I enjoy a new phone....spending hours a day on it justifies the cost. I give my old phone to my oldest kid... Who passes his hand me down to number two who passes hers to the youngest. Everyone is happy! ( hubby is on win phone)

My wife and I are on opposite upgrade cycles. And she never wants a new phone. So I upgrade the eligible line and put my SIM card in it.
If I couldn't do that I wouldn't upgrade every year, maybe.

But I like seeing and using all the iterations. By far I thought the biggest jump was the 4S to the 5. Screen size aside, the 5 was a much better phone, faster, reliable, durable. And I really thought the 4S was a crap upgrade from the 4. A bit faster and Siri, in beta, not much at all.
The biggest S upgrade for me was the 5S but I didn't have a 3G and I don't have a 6S yet. So we will see if that holds true now.

replaces a well used phone/computer for personal and business use.
improved camera
improved LTE with additional bands
faster
new toy
matching dock, lol

I'm more than content to keep a phone for 2 years. When upgrading it feels like a worthy jump up and also leaves me content that I've used (and loved) the phone for a good old chunk of time. I'm currently on a 5s and getting a 6s Plus, so I'm giddy like a kid at Xmas. Obviously the consumer bug where you get all jealous a year later when the next version is out just feeds into the whole tech progression and consumer cycle. Both are essential to keep the innovation (and our desire to own the latest and greatest) going.
