The one true reason....
Not the one reason. But I'll play...

My vehicles, fine clothing, lakefront home, travel for play, other toys etc could all be classified as unnecessary and beyond human basic needs. I mean, how far could we go with this?

I like having the latest and am into technology. Having contract-less phone plans is also a factor that kind of makes you think... "Why not?". I am sure there is a loss somewhere, but it happens?

For those people who order a new phone every year. What's the motivation of getting the 6s?

I'm not being critical and I know different strokes for different folks but here's what I'm looking at.

932 dollars for a phone that will replace my current phone that is not even a year old yet.

The 6s has some nice features like force touch, and the camera was improved but dropping close to a 1,000 on a phone is shockingly expensive. I know I would offset the cost by selling my current one, but I'm wondering what's the basic motivation for those who do this often.

I have a job. and even though I don't gouge people selling my 6+, it will recover some of the money.

If one doesn't mind a little effort selling their iPhone, then the actual cost of upgrading every year is around $300-$400 once you account for sales tax (for most) and upgrade activation fees. That's the cost of doing it every year.

I do it for a couple of reasons but mainly since I do payment plans which are 0% I find that it is a better $ decision to upgrade. I get more for the old phone then I would if I wanted and with all of the competition recently with carriers there have been incentives to get something new from them.

And because why not? I have the money and I enjoy having new gadgets, it is my hobby.

I for one think it works out better than starting new contracts...paying around £300 a year for a new phone? think thats great to be honest

If you buy outright it makes sense to upgrade every year b.c of resale value. It cost me $300 to upgrade every year. If I waited to sell my phone and upgrade every 2 years it would probably cost double since the resale value would be cut in half.

Basically it cost the same to upgrade every year as every 2 years if you buy outright, so why not :)

This. I like new tech but also I am on a Sim only monthly contract here in the UK. If I leave a phone upgrade for a year it makes less sense financially as I lose out on the resale value. Also I don't like being beholden to a carrier for 24 months.

Probably not worth buying it outright. The contract is what gives you that $450 discount which helps immensely. I too always used to buy a $200 iPhone on contract, and 2 years later sell it for around $325 which means after the worthless AT&T upgrade fees and whatnot, I always broke even or made a little bit of profit.

But if you pay full price at $650, and a year later you sell it for $500, you lose $150 every year.

Well yes, the contract gives you a subsidized price on the phone, but it also increases your bill by $15-$25 per month to make up for it. No one is giving you a discounted phone - you're just paying for it as part of the plan instead of up front.

makes them feel good about having that latest high profile phone and gets them some attention and importance in their life.

Pretty bold, sweeping statement.

I upgrade every year because I like the latest and greatest. It's also the main piece of technology I use on a day to day basis. I want my experience the best it can be, so that's why I do it. Plain and simple. I don't care who knows what I have. I get it for myself, not as a statement to others.

I just enjoy upgrading every year. I'm on Next now, which makes it easier, but before that, I had a main line and a dummy line on my acct so I'd switch upgrades every year.

Agreed. But those with a grandfathered unlimited plan with that built in $15 to $20 subsidy is better than ANYTHING in the market, and cheaper to boot. So if I'm paying $80 a month for unlimited data and text (many plans give 2GB data for $80 today), then getting a $200 iPhone on top of that is unreal.

So you're speaking for others here yes? How about don't. I buy a new phone every year because I can... my wife wasn't going to get a new one this year but did because of the rose gold.... you know why? Because we can. Current phone drops down to the kids, old phones hang around as back ups, get given away to family/friends that need one or sold.

I can understand the log of selling/buying due to resale value. I was running the numbers myself, but with out expenses in my life, I cannot justify the cost.

I'm looking at nearly 1,000 dollars , if I sell my phone for 500 (for the sake of discussion), that's 500 dollars out of pocket for a new phone to replace what is admittedly a good iPhone. Being a father of two 9 year olds who are quite active, that expense is hard to justify

Think about it this way, you pay 1000 bucks and how long do you keep your phone? 2 years? more? If you upgrade every two years then that is 500 per year for your phone.

With AT&T Next I spend 570 per year (6 Plus 128GB) and always have the newest phone. Not only do I only spend 570 per year but a lot of times I can make money by paying off and selling the remaining part. For instance this year I paid off my phone for a little under $400 and am planning to sell it for at least $500 maybe more if I can get it. That being said, if you keep your phone for 3-4 years between upgrades then you certainly save quite a bit of money over me.

To most of us. Having that brand new phone is like having something from heaven. And sometimes we love to boast about it.

I'd like to know how many people bought the iPhone 5s AND iPhone 5c a couple years back. Just because, you know, colours

Yeah, not everyone can upgrade every year, but its a passion. It's almost the same reasoning as having a performance car, and spending more money on mods to make it faster, smoother, better. It's simply because we enjoy it and are willing to spend money to keep up. Some people will look down on that take, but hey - we all have passions. Each of them require something from us, be it time, attention, money, whatever. I upgrade every year, alternating between work phone and personal phone. That way, I have more money for mods and stay current on tech. :p

64 gb version. I usually get $500 for it. If you do not want to do any work most websites will even give you over $400 for it.

selling at $500 means I can push it out within minutes of posting it. If I wanted to wait it out I could probably get $550-$575
I am seeing $650 + numbers for 64g iPhone 6 plus right now. Makes upgrading relatively cheap at those prices.

I usually upgrade each year and sell my "old" iPhone to fund the purchase. However, this year I'm really on the fence about buying the 6s. The improved camera is nice, but my 6 takes nice pictures as it is. "3D touch" isn't terribly appealing to me. Neither is 4K video since I really don't shoot video on my phone at all. So in essence, I'm torn. I'm leaning toward just keeping my 6 for another year, but I do love having the latest and greatest technology gadgets.

I upgrade every year because I love having the most capable device I can. Some of that motivation is for fun, some is more practical (I'm the de facto photographer of the family and any more all photos/videos I take are taken with my phone -- the better the camera, the better I feel about those photos). In any event, I don't like the idea of carrying around a phone for a year that's inferior in capability.

That said, I'm very excited for this year's upgrade. The camera upgrades are worth the price alone. Double the speed on the Touch ID sensor? Yes, please -- it's already pretty damned fast, I'm excited to see how much quicker the new one is. Faster CPU/GPU also are nice to have. 3D Touch I think has the potential to bring about a whole new way of using the phone, too.
