We're not talking about gaining screen real estate here, we're talking about the exact same thing that happened from the 3GS to 4, and that's just about everything getting sharper.

Not when we're talking about making the screen bigger we're not. What's the point making the screen bigger if you're not going to fit more on it? Every element would end up bigger. If it's just to make it easier to use for people with larger fingers then fair enough, nothing would need redesigned, just new artwork*. Is that what you're thinking might happen? I was assuming that the point in the bigger screen was to fit more content on, if that's not your assumption then we're talking at cross purposes, but I doubt even more that Apple would seek simply to make everything bigger.

*or just accept the poor scaling, since *1.5 wouldn't look as good as *2, which didn't even look that good in my opinion (a non-optimized iPhone app looked worse on the iPhone 4 than on the 3G, I thought).

I believe this when I see it

EDIT: But I don't wanna believe this though. 4" is as far as I'm willing to go.

I imagine most people will down whatever apple gives them

We need a bigger screen.

That's the #1 complaint among iPhone users aside from battery life and boring iOS 5

Sorry. Not everyone will rush out to buy one. 3.5 is optimal size. Why try and fix whats not broken?
They can release an iPhone that looks exactly like the 4S and call it iPhone 6 and people will still buy them.
Most people left android phones for the iPhone for two reasons.
1. They like the simplicity.
2. Its the right size......

Android eclipsed IOS in the 4th q of 2011 as far as mobile OS's used. I remember that day really well because our CEO flipped out and made us port everything to Android that very day.

4.6" screen on an iPhone hehe. Yea...right. Apple is not an Android OEM, they don't need to put TV screens on their phones for them to sell :D

This is actually not true. iOS still has the lead as far as I know. In fact, iOS even outsold Android during the holiday season (62 million vs 60 million).

It's nice to have larger content, and web pages, media such as photos and videos, and games would benefit from it greatly. You'd also be able to have more powerful hardware and a larger battery for better battery life. Does a 4.4 inch Android device actually have much more screen real estate than an iPhone 4? I don't think so, it's mostly just bigger.

I'd love to have a 4.6 inch iPhone or iPod touch. It's so much better having larger content, and the device would get even better battery life than it does now!

Apple's clearly working on a quad-core for the A6, and it'd simply be too hot in a 3.5 inch smartphone. I don't know what screen size they'll pick, but I do hope they come out with a 4.6 inch model, I'd love that size.

Regarding artwork, technically speaking if they used the original artwork it should look the same as it does on the original device, and if they used the @2x artwork, it should look similar to what it does on the iPhone 4 or 4S. I believe it looks worse because everything else looks so much better.

I think if you had a full screen app with a 480x320 image on it, running on a 3GS and 4 side by side, you'd not see a difference.

I should test that, actually :D

I can't wait for a larger screen personally. I'm 6'6 with super big hands. The phone's screen is just too small. If you have average hands, i guess it's perfect for you.

----------

The problem is that they say iOS but they mean iPhone. iOS as a whole (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) is bigger than Android.

As well, we know that post was wrong because Apple had the best quarter ever. They sold the most smartphones of any company and clearly tablets as well.

Whatever you say chief...

Uh, good retort?

All the fanboiz neg'ing my comments are actually trying to press the up arrow but there fat fingers cannot operate on the postage stamp sized 'screen' on the iPhone.

Galaxy Nexus > iPhone 4S

In the past, I was against any screen size changes. But now, after using my friends Android phones, I think a bit of a bigger screen would make the iPhone even better. 4" and make it AMOLED? iOrgasm!

If they create a phone with a larger screen, I hope they retain a model with the same physical envelope as the existing 4S. There is room to grow the screen within the existing envelope, but I just find the size now to be perfect. I understand that some people are fine with a larger envelope, so they should go ahead and offer two size options.

Perhaps to avoid diluting their product line, they can drop the older models. Unless the sales numbers show that they aren't losing anything by carrying too much variety.

This is a funny rumour.

The biggest screen on a smart phone? Unless Apple has a change of strategy I can't see it.

Plus they would need to make a Iphone mini as millions of people don't want a phone with a screen 9 inches wider.

I could see a 4.6 *and* a 4, but definitely not only a 4.6.

I wonder how many people defending the small 3.5" and saying how much better it is then larger display will actually not purchase the next iPhone if it has a larger screen? I bet few to none.

Most that defend the small screen do it only because that is all that Apple offers. When the time comes that Apple offers a larger screen they will be right in line with the rest of them. The iPhone is a nice phone, but being a Verizon customer there is no way I would trade my fast 4G LTE RAZR MAXX with a larger screen and amazing battery life even on LTE for the old 3.5" CDMA only iPhone. The Retina is a nice display, but it is so nice to have the extra screen space when using apps or typing.

Just a idea... the current iphone glass is just about 4.7in. So why not keep the same phone size and go edge to edge with the screen. Or go very close to the top and bottom edges.

Apple could then :p at other HUGE phones while the iPhone is a nice size with the largest screen.

Just an idea.

There is more empty space on the top and bottom of the device thatn on the sides. They could early expand only about 2mm on either side without modifying the aspect ratio of the phone. Assuming that, And given the current 89mm screen size, we're going to round to 90 to make the math simpler and end up with whole numbers, if we add 4mm to the width, then we add 6mm to the height, giving us a width of approximately 49mm, and a height of approximately 84mm. Do the math and we have a size of ~97.25mm, or ~3.83 in. So that is the largest size phone that we can have without increasing the physical size of the device or changing the aspect ratio of the screen.

For a smartphone, do we really need something more powerful than A5? What are we missing now? 4S is very smooth with all the features. I fear battery life on 5 may suck badly...

If Apple releases an iPhone with a 4.6" screen and discontinues the smaller screens, of course people are going to buy the bigger one. It's not like apple is going to go out of business hehe :D. The point is though that Apple is not going to release a freakin' 4.6" iPhone. They don't need silly gimmicks like stylii and huge screens to sell their product. The highest they'll go is 4, and even that is probably a stretch.

A 4.6 screen isn't happening. The battery wouldn't last and it would be to big. All the people I know who have phones of that size need to walk around with a charging cable. The phone simply doesn't last a full day on one charge.

With a larger screen they should also be able to increase battery capacity. The Moto Droid RAZR MAXX is still a pretty thin phone and they crammed a 3300 mAh battery into it. I think a more powerful processor, larger screen and 4G LTE radios will demand a larger battery. Without one battery life would be terrible.

I have a phone with a 4.3" display running on a 4G LTE network and even using it pretty hard I can get through a whole day and I have 30-40% left when I go to bed at night. How is that possible? It's time for others to follow Moto's lead and put a real battery in these things.

Android eclipsed IOS in the 4th q of 2011 as far as mobile OS's used. I remember that day really well because our CEO flipped out and made us port everything to Android that very day.

And I'm sue sales increased by about 1%. People fail to realize that there are three types of android users. There are those who walked into the mobile shop and got the flavor of the week bogo android device foisted on them by the salesperson, they will not buy apps. There is the person who uses the phone as a feature phone. They will not buy apps. Finally, there are people who genuinely like android, have an aversion to apple, or are 1337 h4x0rs. Of these, the first two might buy apps from the store, but the third will steal apps and side load them. There isn't much fertile ground in the android app landscape.
