"Apple may be preparing a massive move that will propel Safari from niche browser to market leader."

I would like to know who was being quoted here as they surely have to be kidding. Just because they integrate iTunes and Safari does not mean people will be using it to browse the web.

I hate the iTunes store as it is today. Just the other day I was trying to redeem some gift cards. It was no obvious how so I googled. Said "Look for the box on the right that says Redeem". Err no box on the right...Oh I see a scroll bar cause its a web page that they cant bother to scale properly to fit in the window. There it is!!

I have an average widescreen monitor so its not like Im at 1024 wide.

I foresee legal issues, especially in the European Union.

For what? Apple can add a web browser to iTunes if they want to. It'd do nothing to stop you from using Firefox.

Bad idea, but no legal issues.

If they done it right it would make sense, and lets fact it, more people use itunes than any one web browser

I uninstalled Safari on my Mac. I doubt this rumor is true, but if it were, I would just not use iTunes. Or maybe even just not use Macs.

The apple cloud

Although it's not a great solution to boost Safari's market share, I think it kind of makes sense if Apple gonna turn on that data center it built. Making iTunes accessible anywhere you are with all your music etc, etc, etc, does sound like an Apple next big thing.

What the f...? Is it April 1st already?!!

Seriously:
- making the whole iTunes store fully accessible (only) via Safari? I can live with that
- actually MERGING iTunes and Safari? Holy cow, NO! Where's the emergency exit?!!

What nonsense. What is this doing on the front page of Macrumors? Using it just to push the Steve Job's news off the top slot?

Safari and iTunes are both clunky and awful.

Let's make them better by shoving them together.

I hope this really is someone's idea of a sick joke.

That makes no sense, however it would be cool if the iOS app store was separate from iTunes just like the Mac app store is. iTunes is kind of bloated and does all kinds of non music stuff now. I'd rather see iTunes focus on music.

This rumor is most assuredly full of baloney.

iTunes' job is to get people to buy and rent content for iOS products (iPad / iPhone / iPod (Touch) / :apple:tv) so it makes absolutely no sense for them to force current users to abandon their existing web browser of choice and go to Safari in order to keep using their iOS devices.

That alone should be enough to ensure this rumor doesn't pass the sniff test, much less the concerns others have raised with performance and security and usability.

Besides, Safari's marketshare may be small, but Apple doesn't sell it so what do they care?

Better be x64 or I give up.

Anyways, most of iTunes is "web" based anyways. All those pages you see are in a browser in iTunes.

You bring up the first good reason, but even your reason exposes how stupid the rumor is.

You have the rather interesting idea of making iTunes web-based. That could be interesting and it's a far better (and different) idea than the original story suggests.

Won't happen.

Safari is great just the way it is.

iTunes could use some work. Apple should move the "syncing" part of iTunes into its iSync program, and keep iTunes as a media library ONLY.

Google pays them a LOT for the search bar searches. Apple would love to get more of that.

Even if this is untrue Apple still wants Safari usage to go up.

this will be a true rumour. in the quest to make itunes the worst piece of **** software, this safari merge will maybe complete their quest.
the true downside of the iphone/ipad/ipod touch - itunes.

chrome

before chrome, i exclusively used safari. now safari just pisses me off.

i wouldnt mind going back if they made it a little better.
