SE has been extremely popular. Would take this rumor to the bank. If the 8 is as constrained as it seems they will need something to sell. Spec bumping the SE is very low hanging fruit.

Not popular due to it being a good product but because it's the lowest price point to get into the Apple walled garden (i.e. minimal wallet rape). Like being nice to a bitchy cheerleader not because she's a good person but because you want to get onto the squad.

When introducing the iPhone SE, Apple acknowledged that some people simply love smaller phones, and revealed that it sold 30 million 4-inch iPhones in 2015.

I went from a 5s to a 6s Plus, max out storage. I thought I would like the larger screen size of the 6s Plus, which I do, but only when I am sitting down and am able to have two hands on it. Using it one handed is so awkward, especially when taking pictures. With the rounded corners, it is so easy to slip out while holding it, leading to me almost dropping it a few times.

My wife has tiny, child like hands, and she hates to even pick up the 6s Plus due to the size.

Also, finding pockets big enough for the phone, and finding spots to place it in my vehicles are becoming a problem. Pocket size is now a common thing I look for in new clothing.

After my wife broke the 5s I handed down to her, I got her the SE with the 64GB storage. The size is perfect for her, and I also like it. After using it, I was a little envious on how easy it was to use it one handed.

Due to her breaking all her iPhones, I bought her a Otterbox Defender case, which makes the phone look huge.

If Apple would have the high-end features with the larger storage in the SE, I would buy it.

Maybe the iPhone 8 will be what I am looking for.

I finally got my better half out of a nearly 3 year old 5S and into a brand new SE by way of an interim refurbished 5S from Asurion. The Asurion Refurb 5S worked great for about a month and then went to crap. I was blown away that they offered a brand new in sealed box SE 128gb as a replacement. My future mother in law has had one for a bout a year and loves it too. The screen size is too small for me, but they love the compact size. Best part about the deal is we are still out of contract on that line which might allow us to order an 8/Air/Edition iPhone to resale for profit.

That's not true, the SE is more powerful than the iPhone 6, so it is a good product both performance wise and for battery life.

I don't have one, as I do prefer the bigger screen of the current models, but everyone I know that does own one loves it.

Maybe the three iPhones they're releasing at September will be an updated iPhone SE, an iPhone 7S and the iPhone 8. Considering the screen size of the 8, a 7S Plus seems redundant and I can't imagine being a strong demand when the 8 promises all the same features in a smaller form factor.

Moreover, given the current iPhone SE essentially has iPhone 6s tech specs, the next model's tech specs would likely be closer to the iPhone 7. And if that happens in August, then the new iPhone SE would be nearly as powerful as the iPhone 7 with a much cheaper price tag, potentially cannibalizing Apple's sales.
This doesn't make sense. The iPhone SE came out in March 2016 and was on the market at the same time as the flagship iPhone 6s until September when it was replaced with the iPhone 7. How would the iPhone SE with iPhone 7 internals cannibalize the iPhone 7 in only a month?

SE released at an event end of August, and then new iPhones released at an event end of September? All adding up to a product line up of iPhone 8, 7S, 7S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, and new SE? All with their individual variants?

I'm very skeptical to say the least...

That's exactly what the iPod touch did matching the iPhone 6 in Summer 2015. Still different though since it's not a phone.

I don't see this happening unless the SE is a yearly product. The A10 isn't much better than the A9 in real world use.

Upgraded SE - great idea.
But pls don't make the screen any bigger - it's perfect for one-handed use.
Even a smaller bezel will make it more fiddly to use IMO.

If the screen were to be extended to the full size of the existing body, surely that'd be ok for most people for one handed use?

Some may struggle a little bit with the top left or right corner depending on which hand they mainly use, but not the majority, I wouldn't have thought.

I'm wondering, if true, this sounds like a 5c form factor. Not the same current 5s SE design. I think that could be an issue for some. :apple:

This is a rather poor assumption and is simply not true . The whole point behind the smaller display was primarily for one handed use without having to use two hands to have to each across the display.

And what's your metric for "Majority? " You seem to not take into consideration that not everyone needs or wants the display to increase any larger because that was the whole purpose for a 4" display.

I would think reduced bezels perhaps and a higher resolution display would be more likely or appreciated, versus extending the display for some.

This might have been a problem, as you jumped from 4" straight to 5.5". 4.7" (iPhone 6S) might have been easier to get used to.
Maybe you are right, but after using the iPhone 6s Plus for almost two years, that is plenty of time to get used to the larger size. Also, I like the larger size with two hands, but one handed, it isn't for me.

Besides, I am sure I am not the only person to jump from the 4" to the 5.5".
