This is just my opinion as well. But they should leave the form factor alone. I have a 6S, and still have my 5S laying around. Every time I pick up the 5S, I kind of want to just go back to it. I like the look and feel of it better, and I like how much better it fits in my pocket. If I want a big screen, I'll get out my iPad. I think that form factor is perfect as is.
(...)
But I am completely against the removal of the headphone jack. They already took it away on the larger models, I use it all the time and don't want to deal with dongles or having to buy all new headphones. Leave this one alone with the headphone jack.

I'm in the same boat. Came from a 5S (still have it) to my current SE, and I'm really satisfied with it. Upgrade the internals, keep the form factor (and the headphone jack, please) and my wallet will be ready :p

I wish this was true, but at the same time i just bought a few 32gb SEs for $200 each for the family.

I like the small phones. Charge quick. Easy one hand operation. Still partial to old form factor's volume buttons and design. But it may be the price that is driving the SE purchase more than anything for me.

If I could have bought the bigger phones brand new for $200 -$300 then maybe I'd have a bigger phone. But when this is new and $400 cheaper than what I can get a new iPHone 7 for then ...it's hard to consider the iPHone for me especially when I buy for wife and kid too.

btw, actually would like an even smaller phone. The 4s form factor. I barely use my phone sideways. Wouldn't lose anything holding it vertically and yet would be an even easier one handed phone.

The 2012 form factor has no future as it's not 3D-touch compatible.

The SE2 will (have to) have 3D touch and possibly a solid state home button. Can't hold back the ecosystem for another 2-3 years.

Also it should have an A10 for HEVC/HEIF encoding.

That's too major of an update for August and for 2017.

Moreover the 128GB SE is, like, weeks old (actually months but you get it). That counts as an update. Sketchy rumor.

IF Apple were to upgrade the SE, I can easily see the screen becoming 4.5" with a bezel-less LCD display, but the US$ price would not be reduced, and Apple would not introduce ahead of the September 2018 iPhone 8 lineup.

Same. I have the 7 because Verizon practically gave it to me
for free. I want to go to a smaller screen and the form factor.

Same here, not sure why Verizon was so eager to push (mostly) free iPhone 7's to customers other than to lock people into a quasi 2 year contract/payback plan.
The SE form factor great for people like me who carry their phones in their front pockets. The large phone feels like it's going to bend when I sit down.

Because 2 events in less than 4 weeks would totally make sense
Actually they have done similar releases in the past. Older hardware gets a minor bump in a silent update then a couple of weeks later the lead products get the big show.

It hasn't even been a year with my 7 Plus and I already miss the form factor of the 5S, which is now sitting lifeless in my nightstand.

I'm seriously considering going back to something like the SE. I wonder, has Apple fixed the internal dust issues for the SE that affected things like the camera lens on the 5S?

That was my only really gripe with the 5S, other than the lower resolution. If Apple ever updates the SE with a 1080p screen, that would be perfect.

I want this to be true, even prefer it to be done with the 7S/8 release.

March 2016 is a long, long time ... ago.

Home button should be like the 6s or 7.

If they stretch the screen size to minimize the bezel, fine. There is a 3mm "give" available on the 5S above the home button and 6mm below the speaker grill - that alone gives a much larger screen. On the sides, the bezel available is only 1mm each, in my opinion, as stretching it any further will mess with how the phone can be held.

The wide screen will be really wide.

I have my 5S with me right now and can reach all the corners without changing the grip, my kid's smaller hand is also okay with the reach.

Glass front and back, better camera, more dpi to 1080p, and, a huge population waiting to get on-board the Apple bus, all plus points.

Win-Win for Apple - the mold already exists, the newer chips are small enough and the market size WILL become bigger, not just in India and Chine, but also in the USA and other western markets.

Profit margins can be bigger or smaller, no matter, the volume will make the difference.

Not popular due to it being a good product but because it's the lowest price point to get into the Apple walled garden (i.e. minimal wallet rape). Like being nice to a bitchy cheerleader not because she's a good person but because you want to get onto the squad.
This is asinine! Small phones sell because they are preferred based on size.

Bingo!

How does it run on ios 10 or 11 wtv it's at right now? I'm still on 9.3.5

iOS10 runs beautifully on the SE. Super super speedy. The only thing I don't like with the SE is the camcorder when filming can't decide on light and dark and the aperture seems to get confused - it makes the videos look rather unprofessional.
Otherwise, lovely designed phone.

Please make it iPhone 8 design with 4.5" screen !!

YES!!!! Totally with you there man!

Because the phone isn't free. By tying you into a 2 year contract they make huge bucks off you.

This is especially notable in the USA where Cell Phone contracts are extremely expensive. Free in reality is gouging.

Long live the SE!

I just got my SE haha, but you gimme that 3D Touch, water resistance, increased storage, upgraded camera, inductive charging and anything else you want to add and I'd trade up next month.

On a side note I think it is rather interesting there are hundreds of iPhone 6's and 6S's for sale on eBay yet hardly the SE. Seems people who buy them, keep them.

I think it's because the design and the size of this phone really is specific for a demographic who appreciates this form factor. And its cheap Enough where most pay for it outright and it likely doesn't see of a high turn over being it wouldn't be worth to much because of the starting price point.

I see many people in this thread arguing that Apple wouldn't do this. While i have no idea what Apples real intentions are i can easily see them doing this.

One of the big reasons is to have the SE ready for new technology to be seen in the coming iOS release. Frankly some of the new technologies can benefit from a better SoC, especially GPU acceleration.

The GPU itself is a factor because we know Apple expects to leave Imagination behind in less than two years. That means this update wont be with us for much more than a year if it uses existing SoC tech (A10). However Apple could be seen jumping ahead with something not really A10 but not A11 either, possibly a process shrunk A10. A process shrunk A10 would be ideal in an SE due to lower power usage. In any event the features in iOS next (AI/ML & new Video standards) demand a new SoC. Think iPad if you don't see the value of a die shrunk SoC in the SE.

Apple would do this update before the big fall event because it gets an update out of the way that just rehashes existing hardware. The update might be huge for the SE but it really doesn't offer up new tech worthy of a show. Apples Events are all about marketing the latest and greatest. Further i really doubt that Apples events are even a factor in SE sales. SE is successful because it meets the desires of many of Apples customers.

If they took the iPhone 7 Plus, same look and function and resolution, and shrunk it down to the size of the SE, I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

It doesn't make sense for Apple to release another "cheap" iPhone at this point.

As the article states, the SE has 6S internals. The cost of building that model lowers as time goes on. The device will be supported until about 2019, maybe slightly longer. Apple makes more money by waiting.

It would be in Apple's best interest to wait until Spring 2019 to release a successor to the SE; once again bringing the internals up to date.

I have a dream.

A dream, where Apple comes out with a phone,

with a device size not bigger than the actual iPhone SE

with an edge-to-edge OLED display

current chip-and-camera technology, free of protruding wards

decent storage and battery life

It's unlikely Apple will release another iteration of the iPhone SE in 2017. Possible but not probable.

Question: How can Apple upgrade the next iPhone SE?

Touch ID2. This is simple.
but anything after that is going to require replacing the front of the display which would likely increase the price of the phone.

You want 3D Touch you need a different type of display.

You want an improved FaceTime camera, you need a different type of display.

If Apple is really struggling with the iPhone 8 or the iPhone Pro then I could see them bumping the SE but having had a new iteration in 2017 even if it was just storage I think its far more likely for a new SE sized phone coming in 2018.

March 2019? That would be way too long without an update. Three years, actually.

The last time the SE was truly updated was back in March 2016, which was only 6 months after the 6S was released. Apple only updated the storage capacity this March, so it's certainly within reason that the SE could see a internal spec bump soon.

I don't buy this rumor. I want to be pleasantly surprised with a new SE with 3D Touch, IP67 water resistance, and 3D Touch.
