8 GB iPhone 3GS (discontinued in September 2012, dropped by iOS 7 in September 2013) and 8 GB iPhone 4 (discontinued in September 2013, dropped by iOS 8 in September 2014). This is something you could have easily researched.

Edit: iPod Touch 5 deserves an honorable mention at 1 year, 2 months (discontinued in July 2015, dropped by iOS 10 in September 2016).
So no examples of where it happened in less than but not equal to a year? (e.g., 264 days) :p

They were still selling iPhone SE a month ago according to multiple reports on this website!
But not Apple. Apple discontinued sales of the iphone SE in september 2018 upon launching the iphone Xs/Xs Max and the iphone XR.

I think we can expect each iOS device to get 5 years of software updates on average. Based on this, the 6s should be supported all the way up to next year, especially when you realise that the iPad 5 (the one with 2gb ram and A9 chip) was released a year later and sports the exact same specs.

No he wasn't. Apple wasn't selling the SE a month ago. At least not as new and advertised up front on their website like the Xs or XR. Maybe refurbished, but not as new.

Not up front, but I do believe they were new, as they were listed as clearance products. While Apple has both refurbished and clearance products in the "Refurbished and Clearance" category, they write the following in the clearance subsection: "Clearance Products - Find special deals on select new and unopened products." (emphasis mine) https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/clearance

Also, all the (now out of stock) iPhone SEs there are just listed as "iPhone SE...", whereas all the refurbished iPhones in the refurb section are explicitly called "Refurbished iPhone 7/8/X...", and those each have a little refurb disclaimer in their individual product page.

I extremely doubt that iOS 13 will drop support for the SE.

Apple was still selling the SE this spring as new and always seems to give a currently selling product at least a year of upgrades.

I bought a SE recently in the clearance section and it was new (not a refurb).

Apple received all the unopened new SEs shipped back from the different mobile carriers.

Why would they support the iPod longer than the more expensive phones with superior specs? And why are you acting like you can't see which devices (at least appear to) visit the site running future versions.

iPhone 5s
iPad Air
iPad mini 2 and 3

That's what they'll drop. ;)

This had to be true, if my assessment of TC being cut throat entrepreneur considering the 2019 situation for Apple without 5G yet they supposed to post huge profits than what they last time, they need to kick the butt of their stubborn customers refusing to upgrade to their fancy yet outdated flagships in 2019.....

I think this is false, it's based off a similar report that came out a while back.

There are so many reasons it doesn't make sense.

1. Apple is promoting the fact it supports back to the 5S as a promotional thing for its environmental efforts
2. The SE is near identical in performance to the 6S.
3. Cutting off potential revenue for services doesn't make sense
4. Apple is still selling the iPod touch 6 which is almost identical in performance to the iPhone 5S (albeit with an A8 and probably better graphics) - I don't see them dropping a device they are still selling now in May. They did drop iPod touch 4 support not long after it was discontinued, but that was a baseline model and the last 256MB device (along with the 3GS) still supported in iOS 6. There are 6 other 1GB of ram devices supported in iOS 12.
5. Apple has never dropped support for multiple generations at once.
6. iOS 13 is again supposedly going to focus on improving performance and stability (According to a recent credible rumour).

I could see A7 devices being dropped this year, then A8 in 2020 and A8X and A9 the 2021.

Apple's pattern is every 2 years (or every 'S' device) has received an extra year of support)

iPhone 2G - iOS 2,3
iPhone 3G - iOS 3,4
iPhone 3GS - iOS 4,5,6
iPhone 4 - iOS 5,6,7
iPhone 4S - iOS 6,7,8,9
iPhone 5 - iOS 7,8,9,10
iPhone 5S - iOS 8,9,10,11,12

Why on earth would anyone be “very surprised” if Apple dropped support for the 6? That phone is FIVE years old for heavens sake. It’s already been supported for long enough. If Apple lose customers over it, then so be it as I doubt the kind of people that are too cheap to upgrade their 5 year old phone are the type of customers any company wants or needs.

Whilst they are at it, they should also drop support for the 6S (2015) and make ios13 iPhone 7 minimum

I could see them dropping the 5s but I really doubt they would drop the 6 or 6s. I have 2 daughters who are going to be upset if they drop support for the SE. They love the size of their SEs and have held onto them rather than upgrading to newer, larger phones.

Same here, we just got my daughter an SE last year, it would suck if support is dropped for it now. Then again, I am almost done paying for the Iphone X, so I could give her that and get the next one that comes out.

I’ll scream bloody murder if they stop supporting the SE this soon! Tim will have to tear this device from my cold dead fingers!

No way they will drop support for the SE.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, yes - it's about time. My old one was quite slow on iOS 12.
Are they actually totally dropping support, or just preventing the installation of newer iOS versions? As an owner/user, I would only be concerned if security patches are withdrawn. That would cripple the usefulness of the old phones.

I currently use an SE on 10.3.3. It works great, except maybe the rare freeze, forcing a restart. My Macs are still on Sierra.

If support for the SE is indeed dropped from iOS 13, does that mean I'll lose the option to upgrade to 12.x after 13's release? In that case I may consider upgrading to 12 sooner to future-proof my phone to support app updates. From what I read, iOS 12 is an optimized version of 11?

Why are you still on 10? 12 runs like butter on SE.

10.3.3 was running fine and I didn't hear great things about 11 so I held off on the upgrade. Then nothing in 12, aside from security updates, seemed to scream at me as a must-have feature.

But I'm encouraged that your SE is doing well on 12. Did it come with 12 installed? or was it an upgrade? an upgrade through a clean install, etc?

Apple stops allowing iOS software updates on certain older devices every year (they decide which devices and the criteria they use isn’t 100% clear). The problem is that the security patches are usually released as part of minor one point or two point iOS software updates released throughout the year, so any device that stops getting software updates will not get any future security patches. That device will remain stuck in the last software version it was allowed to update to.

I would add the iphone SE to that list. If the 6s and 6s Plus can get iOS 13 then certainly so can the SE, which has the same CPU and RAM as those two.

I doubt the following possibilities-

1. iPhone SE and under unsupported, while 6S gets iOS 13
Both phones have the same specs and Apple has never stopped supporting a device with the same processor as a supported device.

2. 6/6+, SE, 6S/6S+ are unsupported
This also seems unlikely, as Apple has never stopped supporting three generations of iPhone at once. Additionally, this wouldn’t make sense as ‘S’ model processors are supported longer (3GS, 4S, 5S). Based on the pattern now, they should get iOS 15.

3. 5S and 6 are not supported
Apple has never stopped supporting a device based on RAM. For every update, the processor has decided whether or not the device gets the update. The number of people suggesting otherwise have clearly not seen the pattern that Apple has continued for 12+ years.

Apple hasn’t had trouble running new software on old devices (5S on iOS 12) and the 6 on iOS 13 wouldn’t be different either. They could easily make a version for older devices that runs faster or just allow for it to run iOS 13, although slower. I find it strange that people would rather not let anyone receive an update than allow for it to slow down their phone. Giving the update gives freedom of choice. People who don’t mind a slower phone could update while others could stay on older software.

Apple will of course do this, thinking all will buy or upgrade to new iPhones, business as usual... but if they do it will just be another nail in their coffin, because users will just switch out of the Apple universe because for one they won't trust Apple any more, and the other is that the more decent smartphones are now far more cheaper and even better... cost is the factor here, the SE needs another year for Apple to bring out a good replacement (i.e. cheaper) iPhone... "it is the price stupid!"

iOS 13 will not be compatible with the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, or iPhone SE, and support for the original iPad Air and iPad mini 2 will also be dropped, according to a questionable rumor tipped to us by French blog iPhoneSoft.fr.

iphone-6-iphone-se.jpg

This is at least the second time we've heard this rumor this year, but it remains questionable for a few reasons. For one, the iPhone SE uses the same A9 chip as the iPhone 6s and the fifth-generation iPad, so it would seem inconsistent if the iPhone SE was dropped but the latter two devices remained supported.

It could be theorized that Apple wants to drop support for iOS devices with 4-inch displays, including the iPhone 5s and iPhone SE, but there is again some inconsistency there, as the sixth-generation iPod touch will allegedly run iOS 13.

This rumor would be significant if accurate, however, as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in particular were tremendously popular devices that are likely still in the hands of many millions of customers. Meanwhile, the fan-favorite iPhone SE was only released just over three years ago, in March 2016.

iOS 13 is expected to be unveiled at Apple's annual WWDC keynote on June 3, so we'll find out for sure in less than a month.

Part of me hopes they do. Less temptation to ever buy anything from Apple ever again. As it stands I now have several iPhone SE’s and if they get left behind, that’s fine. At least I don’t have to worry about Apple screwing up my OS with some feature-breaking or compatibility-breaking “update”.

But if my various, recently-purchased devices become obsolete, or “vintage,” you best believe there’s no way I’d buy after that...

I've updated my iPhone SE to iOS 12 and it works great, better than when it was on iOS 11. iOS 11 slowed down my iPad Air and iPhone SE, and then iOS 12 sped them back up again.

I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped iPad Air support for iOS 13, but dropping it from the SE would be very un-Apple like in my view.
