You running such a thing? How much of a hassle is it? I mean, I'm ok at following technical instructions but reliability is also important.
I'm not currently but have dabbled in the past. I find it to be a similar experience to running Windows on Macs in the early days of Boot Camp. There are definitely concessions you have to make if you don't use a device with 100% compatible components/chips and don't want to kludge it yourself (for instance forgoing Bluetooth and/or Wifi and avoiding software updates until verifying they won't brick you) but if you do your research up front and make sure to buy a PC that contains compatible parts it can work swimmingly. You are right, though. It's a much more pleasant experience if you approach it as a hobby and don't rely on it as your only system.

If you do a search on YouTube you will find scores of small form factor hackintoshes.

Mac Mini seems so easy to update. I wonder what’s taking them so long. It already looks nice. Tweak the design a bit and update the internals and ports and voila!

I know it’s not super popular, buttt some people are buying it.
... because the current executives see themselves as top tiered social elites, who always loath solving problems for common folks. Unfortunately, Mac Mini is a great affordable productivity solution for small people.

It was a sad day when my 2007 mini no longer served my needs, and was replaced with a windows desktop that mostly does.

Such a pity the Mac Mini hasn't been updated in so long! Come on apple - where are you?
?????? Most people use their mac mini for email...internet and perhaps itunes...the new one is not going to change that...you are asking for change for the sake of change.

Based on what research? I use mine as my primary house server, do routine daily analysis of all data I post on my website, etc. Apple absolutely needs a line of headless desktops, one that covers the range from boxes to compete with the many NUC-class systems out there all the way up to Pro-class hardware. (And I don't want to hear about "cannibalizing the iMac line" - different people want headless systems and AIO, some people like me want/need BOTH kinds for different work.)

Apple has mostly abandoned the server market. The functionality recently dropped from MacOS Server is just the latest indication of that. Those who are looking for a server are better off going with another platform that runs on up-to-date hardware at this point.

Agree, I use mine as a house server as well, I have iMacs, Airs, and even an old G5 (from 2003!) for actual seats. When I can finally upgrade it, I'll probably turn the existing mini into a linux box for robotics work.

I use my Mac Mini (cheapest configuration 2014 model) first and foremost as a music transport to my hifi rig. I also use occasionally for streaming TV shows from my native Sweden (being in Abu Dhabi for now).

I'd like to see a drop-in replacement for it: at least one USB-A port (for the hifi audio), an HDMI port, RJ-45 Ethernet (better than wifi for audio), C7 110 - 240 VAC contact and Bluetooth keyboard/trackpad connectivity. Ax or Intel isn't important - but SSD and decent RAM size is.
