Was a looooong time Quicken on Windows user. Kept a Windows VM on VMware for a number of years solely for Quicken. Switched to Mac version with Quicken 2015. Been pretty much happy with it. 2017 has worked well for my needs.

Biggest complaint right now: their iOS app is pretty much useless. Very basic entry. Biggest issue is that the iOS app does not show information correctly. Some accounts, the totals don't add up/match to what is on desktop. Added a new account last week, and it does not show up in any of the account lists, but can search and find those transactions (and yes, the desktop is setup to sync that account to cloud).

Not sure if issue is iOS app, cloud, or both. For that reason, staying away from this new subscription version until more guinea pigs have taken the plunge and reported via reviews. Desktop is working correctly, why mess with it. Probably will stick with 2017 until I start getting the nasty-grams from Quicken re: switching things off for that version.

If you balance your checkbook and credit card statement each month, Quicken makes it easy. It also downloads the payments as they clear your bank and credit card, alerting you far sooner to potential fraud than the monthly statement. If you take the time to categorize your transactions, there are analysis you can run to see where you are spending your money, plus it is easy find out how much you are spending each year.

In order for this to happen smoothly, you must spend the time to record each credit card and check expenditure in Quicken. I do this by habit as I remove receipts from my wallet.

We pay bills online not using Quicken. If I did not carefully balance my accounts on a regular basis, I would see little use for Quicken. The other features mean nothing to me. If the 'Starter' downloaded from my investment account, I would use it. In one comparison, it appears not to.

I went all in with the 2-year Premier subscription, buying a CD at a nearby Office Depot at the sale price and mainly for the addition of Bill Pay. The cost of Bill Pay for one year is $30 more than the 2-year sub sale price, so a no-brainer for me. Throwing in a 5GB bump of Dropbox isn't such a bad thing.

Didn't see a comment about the box buy here about this, there's a key code to activate a DL from Quicken once you've registered or logged in to their web site (I didn't have to dig out my DVD player!). My Bill Pay portal reflected the updated payment scheme immediately. The Dropbox code worked immediately. The new Quicken account portal includes new options, including the ability to change versions - I'll check this out later.

My 2¢, I only bought in because of the Premier versions includes Bill Pay. I do have 2017 installed, just for my personal finances - if it wasn't for the included Bill Pay I likely would stick with 2017 as long as it gets security updates. I'll be installing the included Windows app in the next week or so, so there's that nice addition as well - the Windows version's "Invest & Plan for Taxes" options are pretty slick and I might just use the Windows app more often. If Quicken had offered the new "Home, Business, & Rental Property" as a dual-platform option I would have bought into that subscription.

Remember folks, this is a new company and not Intuit. I don't like the subscription model either, but I found that I'm updating Quicken every year anyway (my choice and YMMV). I've found the new Mac product to be very good, albeit with some disparity with the Windows version. It was good enough for me to move from Parallels/Quicken for Windows to Quicken Mac a couple years ago and I've not looked back. I believe there is/was a trial and I'd recommend taking another look.

Rob

This - I was updating the software every year too - So, I'm OK with this. There were a few 'growing pains' with the move away from Intuit but, at least for me, all is well now with the software.

I have a legitimate question, though: with open source software, how to the developers buy food and pay rent if they don't charge anything for their work?

The only complaint I have is that you can’t open the data file from multiple computers like Moneydance. That being said I left Moneydance and moved to Quicken and have been mostly happy with the results. Upgraded to 2018 and have had no issues so far.

Did you have any issues exporting your data from Moneydance? I tried a trial of Banktivity, but when I imported my Moneydance data it was a mess.

For many years I have been using the 2007 version without any online features. I enter all transactions and quotes manually, and I don't use bill pay. So, this means I could buy a 1 year subscription, and when that expires, continue doing as I am now, with no limitation on manual data entry, editing or reporting, right?

I'm still suspicious that they would have some way of hobbling me if I went this route.
I doubt they would hobble you. Most of the value in Quicken comes from being able to download transactions seamlessly, thus most people who want it would pay the annual fee. Just like with the current boxed versions, where you can continue using them forever if you don't need the online features. If you're on of the group of people who need the downloads, then you're in a lucky minority that can continue using the older version in perpetuity. If you'r worried about it, you may be better off finding a copy of quicken 2017, which is not a subscription version and works pretty well. I was a Quicken 2007 holdout as well, but ended up moving over to 2015, then 2016 & finally 2017. I've enjoyed the added usability of the newer versions, but then again, I use the online features, so they may not be of as much value to you.

Bought 2017 and got a refund a few days later. If this company would stop with the expensive yearly updates, and just patch and incorporate the stuff in quarterly patches, maybe I’d try them again. 2017 was so watered down, lacking features the windows version had, I’m surprised they pushed it out for release! Anything to make a buck. So I don’t have high expectations for 2018. I’ll stick with banktivity

Intuit's take on Quicken customers seemed to become something akin to this: "Its one of the most iconic brands out there, but it’s 2 percent of our revenue and the customer base hasn’t grown for 20 years.". Intuit wasn't able to grow Quicken faster, and new/younger users were not beginning to use Quicken (opting for other solutions such as Mint or something else). When you are a solid generator of revenue, but your customers are aging and you aren't expanding, you get out of that business and invest in other potential or proven growth engines (QuickBooks Online and TurboTax Online). Intuit was not willing to gamble on growth from Quicken, so it had to go, even though it was product #1 for Intuit.

Now that Quicken is leaner, perhaps there's some chance for innovation and real improvement. Either that, or the customer base will continue to age and fresh/new users will not buy into the software. Personal finance desktop software shouldn't need to be updated every year, and changing to a subscription model is risky. Either this works for Quicken, or I think its days are truly numbered.

Disclaimer: I am a stockholder of Intuit and a former Intuit employee.

I HATE SUBSCRIPTIONS, but I wouldn't mind paying a subscription if it amounted to about the same as the cost of upgrading every three years like I do now or a lil more. However, the software has been buggy as hell lately and I have not been able to download or pay my bills with Wells Fargo since January 23rd. There are problems listed all over the Quicken forums about connection issues. If you call support you are on ignore for a very long time and then only to speak with someone you can barely understand. Sadly, after being a customer for over 20 years, I think I'm pretty done with Quicken.

I’m going to disagree and say that I think Quicken is finally getting better.

I’ve used Quicken since the very first version back in the 1980s. That’s a long time. I used Quicken 2007 up until mid-2017, but finally made the jump to the new version when they got Quicken Bill Pay finally supported. I then, begrudgingly, signed up for the subscription to Quicken 2018.

Although Quicken 2017 had some bugs and I had trouble with some of the online features, recently most of those bugs seems to have been squashed, and the online stuff (with something like 20 different accounts at a dozen or more banks) has been working flawlessly. There are still a few things I liked better in the old Quicken, but it was FULL of bugs for years, and today’s Q-2018has far fewer.

Quicken for Mac has improved, but, still does not compare to Windows versions.

Was a long time Quicken on Windows user, finally made the jump to Mac version with Quicken 2015 so that I could pretty much retire my Windows virtual machine.

Quicken on Mac does enough for my needs, but do wish there were features from the Windows version in the Mac version (eg. really miss creating a new file via year-end copy function). Quicken cloud has never worked correctly: all accounts transfer over, can search and find the transactions, but does not show you the accounts in the mobile app (have tried multiple resets, new data files).

Right now, the new owner's of Quicken are not doing enough to justify my jumping into their subscription model. Need to get a lot more feature parity on Mac before committing. Will most likely keep using 2017 until support gets pulled, then decide to stay or move to something else.

There is a new update out for Quicken for Mac 2017. It's version 4.6.9
Has anyone installed this update yet?
Is it safe to do so?
TIA

I've been running it since it was released (actually about 3 weeks ago) without any issues. I've got Quicken 2018 but haven't installed it yet since it starts the 2 year timer and 2017 is still supported.

I have also been using 4.6.9 without any issues. I have not upgraded to Quicken 2018. As long as I can download the statements, I will stay with this version.

yes, it's a subscription and i hate subscriptions. yes, it's better than essentials, 2015, and 2017. yes, it's been improved over the past year with several updates. BUT... i still run 2018 in parallel with 2007 because the reports in 2018 SUCK!
