Got rid of mine a few years ago. Got tired of all the memes, ads and watching some relatives make complete idiots of themselves.

Best move I've ever done.

Besides, everybody knows Facebook is now for old people :p

Those must be trolls, or bots trying to blend into the grandparent crowd. I can imagine that most "real" old people who get a good look at Facebook can't take the stress of seeing so much garbage, and end up with a circle locked down to parents of their photogenic infant grandchildren, full stop.

Back in 2010 I had a setup for about ten seconds... or anyway until one of their early privacy statement updates. I actually read it, and promptly deleted my account. So I've been spared at least the excitement of wondering if I ever replied to a Russian bot on Facebook. I have wondered about the bot-ness of a few members here who used to haunt PRSI but they're mostly gone now so... if they were bots, they flunked their beta test somehow I guess.

I do not do social media.

Today, I'm initiating a self imposed exile to social media. Some of this may be temporary, other portions will not.

I think the meanness of some of the stuff I see (without getting overly PRSI) has just turned me off. I also think most of the stuff I see is useless, like those quizzes to see what type of villian, superhero, cartoon character you are.
Just a fun fact to the OP. The 'useless' quizzes are used to gleen answers to your bank security questions, among other things. It's amazing how simple minded we all are.

Isn't it amazing for the 'game' to guess your best friends name based on your favorite tv show and middle school name ( a significant number of people were born where their primary school is located - now we know your place of birth ). What's better, is that the game guesses wrong, but the quiz taker will still tell it the right answer.

Social engineering, so easy.

I have always assumed people just make up answers to those questions. Why would anyone put the actual answers? Maybe I have overestimated my fellow Americans yet again, gee.

A colleague at work wished me happy birthday one year. I looked at him strangely and said it wasn't my birthday that month.

He'd had a notification from Skype. Of course I'd just used a fake date of birth!
Years ago I owned several large sites and holdings in other networks (millions in visitors) and we'd hold meetings on MSN Live (Live Chat, IIRC), or whatever it was called. MSN Messenger to me. I had made a throwaway and years later, around the time of the Skype integration, I had similar well wishes in the middle of July... My birthday is very early in the year. I don't appreciate third party services leaking such personal details to "friends," even if they're paid staff. Just one of those creepy features that turn me off from all social media. I see little point in airing your personal life, but perhaps that's a generational thing. Or not wanting to read what the in-laws are up to.

Some of our direct competitors use services like Slack in addition to formal meetings, but in my own testing, I've found such services to be insecure and log chat that shouldn't be logged. And when you employ a close to a couple hundred people with access to risky data, it becomes second nature to block such services on your business network. Plus, what happened to sitting down with people for a once weekly meeting. Bagels and lox included!

All these techy types trying to ruin life for other people. I'll skip the SEC interrogation TYVM.

After the latest school shooting, and my redneck relatives reaction to it, I've decided to quit Facebook.

sure, you say that "now" If friends are there, they'll pull you back in.

It's easier for me because i don't have any friends... er. u mean not any that goes on social sites.

Bumping because I finally got to sit near my mom while she went on her daily Facebook meltdown.

Her: “Did you hear what [political figure she doesn’t like) said? Holy crap.”

Me: “Yeah, I did. Two weeks ago. Don’t click ‘like’, because the site you’re reading from is garbage.”

Rinse and repeat. Wait, no — there’s no rinsing. It’s more like “lather and repeat”. She’s being gamed by the system for someone else’s financial benefit, and no matter how clearly it gets explained to her, I don’t think she cares.

Crazy United States thought.

Our Constitution ( short version ):
Amendment 1: Free speech of the people and press...
Amendment 2: ...the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Seems that the freedom of the press and social media is infringing on the right to keep and bear arms. While I agree that better technology should be in place to evaluate the purchaser / owner of guns. I also believe there should be rules put in place that limits trolls, spam bots and protects 14 year olds in social media.

This is why I mentioned #2. Society ( media ) seems to have no issues with infringing upon #2, but let someone say a single thing about freedom of the press and all hell breaks loose.

I understand guns are made to take a life. I also understand that mobs do the same. Think witch trials.

We need to protect our society from 'harm' created by sensationalist bots. At least until we can educate the population on safe social media habits. This also applies to old media.

Even hurricanes at the weather channel are being sensationalized for ad revenue.

Social media is not “the press”.

The First Amendment guarantees that the government will not take vindictive action upon people who speak out against the government. It does not protect against people making threats against each other (it can be charged as a crime), making false statements (libel lawsuits cover these), etc.

I’m not sure why you’re bringing the Second Amendment into this.

I'm sorry I was not clear enough. It seems you have misinterpreted my comment.

More clearly?
Your mom has a meltdown when reading social media. Alot of people have a meltdown with social media. Governments ( ours included ) use social media to cause meltdowns. It seems that many would freak out if we impose rules on controlling social media's impact on our society, with regulatory actions.

Article II regulatory actions are thrown up, it would seem, without abandon.

Both of these 'freedoms' keep our country free, but I would like to see a bit of action taken place on Article I to possibly intervene in meltdowns. Hopefully making your mom and others less prone to meltdowns.

I brought up Article II, because we are looking at regulatory actions to hopefully stop meltdowns, possibly caused by Article I freedoms.

You didn’t read what I said about the First Amendment and how it relates to terroristic threats (like when a guy threatens to kill his neighbor), hate speech, slander, etc.

In other words, it already has limits, the existence of which which you completely fail to recognize.

I did fail to recognize your point and can now understand how your mom would fail to see your point as well. Thank you for playing.

Don’t worry, people in Japan, China, Europe, and Brazil do the same thing.

But for anybody who is filling out security questions, just use a different password or use a PIN number.

No FaceBook. I have no friends and what family is left I hate.

"Awwwww... "

... but it's true that Facebook networks can bring to light things one would generally manage to have escaped knowing otherwise about assorted family members and real-life acquaintances as well. It's one of the reasons I've taken some sibs' tales about that to heart, and so have no FB setup.

You have some pals around here in other subforum threads who like to keep up with your Big Green Egg cooking adventures... and even in PRSI you not only have some friends but at least nine lives, man.
