iPod touch Rabble rabble rabble rabble! 256MB RAM, no IPS screen, .7 MP camera! Rabble rabble!!!

Out of curiosity, why does a phone deserve a better camera than a media player?

What an interesting question! Did anybody actually argue that a phone deserves a better camera than a media player? I looked through the thread and didn't find anyone saying that, not even the person you quoted. They said if you want a product with a particular feature, then you should buy that product! It's too bad Apple doesn't do exactly what some people want; that doesn't mean they've done anything wrong.

On the other hand, there have been plenty of threads saying that the iPod Touch 'deserves' the same camera as the iPhone. Maybe it's that sense of entitlement you are thinking of.

In regards to why the iPhone has a better camera, didn't anyone think about the fact that the iPhone is twice the thickness of an iPod? Its most likely a better camera is also bigger, if even slightly.

I'm 13 and I'm not really complaining. Sure the 0.7MP picture quality isn't that good but it has a lot new features than the 3G features. Such as the Apple A4 chip, a maybe not as good Retina display as the iPhone 4 but still pretty good and high resolution, it also features HD video recording and FaceTime which is enough features for me. Let the 3 or 5MP camera be for next year Apple.

I agree with you all the way.
ps. I'm 12 and I thought I was like the only kid on here. cool that other young people love Apple like me (I've been on since I got my iPod Touch when I was 10) :D :apple:

This has been argued. The problem is, the thickness/thin-ness argument doesn't really hold up. Most people you ask would gladly take a thicker device in exchange for a better camera. The iPhone 4 is anything but thick. Thicker than the touch? yes. But that still in no way makes it a thick device. It's still thin. And it has a 5MP camera.

For the record, I'm someone who's ok with the fact the new touch has a .7MP camera on it. So I'm not arguing against Apple's choice, just pointing out that of course thicker means you can pack more stuff into it and better stuff into it. But not many people wouldn't trade off a small fraction of an inch for a far superior camera.

Although I have an iPhone 4, I wouldn't complain about the iPod Touch no matter what rev, looking back at my first mp3 player. A GPX, if I recall:
  • Green-tinted two line screen that only scrolled the filename, and elapsed time.
  • 54MB of memory (held a whole 7 SONGS @ 128KPBS !!!! I remember going insane when I get it)
  • Ran on 1 AA battery, probably the most rarest thing to find another in my house when it dies
Yep. I'm quite impressed with what Apple has done with the MP3 market in a matter of years.

Who would have thought that now we would be taking photos with MP3 players instead?

This board is like the angry crowds in South Park... Rabble rabble rabble!!! Booo!!! hissss!!!!

You don't like the specs for new Touch? Pony up and get an iPhone 4. iPhone 4 users pay hundreds of dollars more than iPod Touch users, because of our cell phone bill every month to AT&T, so that's why we get the more RAM, the better screen, the good quality camera, etc.

Stop complaining about the specs and make a choice.

DEY TOOK 'ERRRR UPGRAAADES!

i said the upgrade is going to be without a 3 or more mp cam and will only have 256 ram also all the other stupid stuff on the wishlist will not happen, i was laughed at, although i didnt think it would get a new design....

It is impressive. Imagine what technology will be like in 5-10 years.

Because people are easy to manipulate and Apple is using it very wisely. This year some people are very convinced iPhone has much more better specs, because of the higher price tag, but at the same time they forget that was not the case with iPod touch 3rd gen vs iPhone 3GS, where iPod touch was very little inferior to the iPhone (lack of camera and GSM only!), much less than today's iPod is to the iPhone 4. Not to mention price difference was very similar to the latest generation of these devices. So people are using their arguments for price justification whenever they want and whenever it suits their logic, not necceserly the facts.

Sure, the new touch has been given new features, but of what quality? The camera is not even worth 2$. Really it's not the point in giving crap features, but features that are actually of some today's standard in the industry. For me, the 3mpix camera would be just fine, but for god's sake, not the 0.7mpix piece of s**t. And yes, I don't really get why for some people the phones are entitled to have a better camera. This is useless argument for me.

As for the topic itself, it's worth mentioning Apple has reduced packaging of one more thing - earphones are no longer the ones like in iPod touch 3gen. They lack a microphone and remote. Of course iPod touch 4gen has been given a mic itself, but the lack of remote on earphones is no excuse for Apple. They went back to the earphones from iPod touch 1st and 2nd generations, along with no longer including a dock connector. Bravo Apple.

Blame Apple for going the wrong direction on thickness:

iPhone 4 = 0.37"

touch 3G = 0.33"

touch 4G = 0.28"

Actually, it does. It doesn't matter if people would take a thicker touch to fit a better camera. Reality is the Touch is thinner. And the iPhone 4's camera won't fit in the thinner iPod Touch. That is fact and reality. Apple made a conscious decision to do that.

Here is the thicker 3G iPod Touch next to the iPhone 4's camera. It doesn't fit.

Now I don't know if they could have put a better camera then the .7 MP one in the Touch. But, the iPhone 4's camera would not fit in the old or new Touch.

I agree that iPhone's 4 camera would'nt fit into iPod touch, but it really wouldn't be a problem for Apple to fit some decent let's say 3mpix camera with autofocus, that would be much thinner than iPhone's camera. That way iPod touch users would have good camera in their devices too, not some piece of s**t. Find me 0.7mpix being used in any other 2010 device on the market - phone or not a phone, will you? See how ridicilous this is.... Apple is simply pissing at us. This 0.7mpix, along with TN screen is nothing else but Apple strategy the same people who buy iPod touch 4gen to buy iPod touch 5gen the next year, because then Apple will obviously implement better camera and IPS screen and advertise new touch as something worth upgrading. This is a clear strategy to make people buy practically the same device each year. So what they already bought an iPod touch 4gen this year? They will gladly spend another 299$ for essentially the same device in 2011, paying just for improved camera and maybe screen, not thinking about the fact they should have already got this in iPod touch 4gen. Ths is how Apple is playing with it's customers.

Reality is the Touch is thinner. And the iPhone 4's camera won't fit in the thinner iPod Touch. That is fact and reality. Apple made a conscious decision to do that.

They could've just as easily made the touch the same size as the iPhone.

They could've just as easily made the touch the same size as the iPhone.

They could have, but they didn't. They made that choice( and they have been consistent in making that choice of going thinner).

These facts are something that we have to live with. Some features are better on the iPhone and some features are better on the iPod Touch. That has been true ever since the original iPhone and iPod Touch. If you don't like it, don't buy the new iPod Touch. It's quite simple.

Now I do think they could have put a better camera on the 4th gen Touch, but I don't think it was unreasonable to think it wouldn't be as good as the iPhone 4's camera due to Apple's strive to make things thinner.

You're trying to get a $700 device for $230. Just stop.

When you can find me a multitasking pocket computer with HD video recording at $230, let me know.

Not really. I got it with 3gen which was essentially same as iPhone 3GS minus the camera and GSM modules. I agree putting an iPhone's 4 camera would be too much for an iPod, but 0.7mpix is not enough for today's industry standard in any device on the market, even the cheapest ones... Not choosing one of the most advanced camera doesn't neccesarly have to mean choosing the worst one instead.

When you can find me a multitasking pocket computer with HD video recording at $230, let me know.
I don't really need multitasking on the iPod touch, which is already a fake multitasking, rather than true one. I need a pocket multitouch music, gaming and web-browsing device. Added features in the new touch are decent, but they lack in quality so much that it keeps me from getting one. And no, I don't think 4gen should be identical to iPhone4 spec-wise. I just think it shouldn't have been so much inferior to it as it happened to be, that's it. Next year you're gladly spend another 300$ for another iPod touch, which will have all the features improved, that should already be in this year's generation. That way Apple will get from you twice as much $.

As for the HD video recording, don't get too excited, because it's not true HD, it's just an upscalled 720p from much smaller actual resolution. Sorry.

They could have, but they didn't. They made that choice( and they have been consistent in making that choice of going thinner).

That's my main complaint against the touch - it's too thin. They deliberately make it thin so they can use the excuse that iPhone features won't fit.

Exactly, like anyone really cared for it exept Apple itself. Thickness of 2/3gens was already good, I don't need more thinner iPod, especially not for the cost of quality in features, and some stupid Apple excuses.... :/

This is giving me a headache and I'm just READING it.

Just please shut up and enjoy your freakin iPod.

The best way to complain is to order one from Apple, then cancel the order before it ships. Then do it again a few times.

Also, to make Apple really feel your ire, be sure to spend that money on a product from some competing company. Then blog about it in addition to mentioning it in every online forum.

And it is very satisfying to see how many people will speak up to defend Apple (by berating you) when you post your complaints in an apple-centric forum like this one. You get one point for every post that complains about your post.

Enjoy! I do.

Then don't buy it. Oh wait, you already didn't, you just love to post repeatedly about how Apple has spurned you, and you alone. Boo freaking hoo. How you feel and how it will sell on the market are really two entirely different things, so stop pretending you speak for everyone in your posts. You can pick up a refurbied 3G 32GB for $229 from the Apple store online right now, too, BTW.
