iPod touch Rabble rabble rabble rabble! 256MB RAM, no IPS screen, .7 MP camera! Rabble rabble!!!

I'm 13 and I'm not really complaining. Sure the 0.7MP picture quality isn't that good but it has a lot new features than the 3G features. Such as the Apple A4 chip, a maybe not as good Retina display as the iPhone 4 but still pretty good and high resolution, it also features HD video recording and FaceTime which is enough features for me. Let the 3 or 5MP camera be for next year Apple.

wait, its a .7mp for the main camera or for the facetime one?

The main camera is .7 megapixels.

Megapixels is nothing more than how many pixels the camera can output at maximum. It's simple arithmetic.

1280x720 image.

Multiply: 1280*720 = 921,600 pixels per image...

Divide: 921,600/1,000,000 = .92 megapixels

At a loss...

It seems a lot of people here purchased the 3g Touch, but how many features did that add from the previous generation besides a bump in processor speed and storage? I'm upgrading from a 16gb 2g touch to the new 64gb 4g and I couldn't be more excited. A lot of you are comparing the new touch to the iPhone 4 but what you should be doing is comparing it to the 3g Touch as the iPod and iPhone are two different products. Here's the way I see it:

Screen - Huge upgrade in resolution. I'm excited to finally see the games I have that have been updated with high resolution graphics. As far as IPS is concerned, I've been using my 2g touch for 2 years and I've never had a problem with the screen looking bad from viewing it off angle. It's a tiny device! Why would anyone be looking at it from any angle besides head on??

Camera - The last generation had no camera, this one has two. Are the cameras as good as the iPhone? No. But again, not a really fair comparison as they are different products. It's a freakin iPod... I'll use the still camera for quick snapshots to upload to facebook/twitter. 960x720 resolution is fine for that. The video camera on the other hand looks pretty good judging from the test videos I've seen posted to Youtube.

Processor - Yet another bump from the last generation. Judging from the time I've spent with an iPad and iPhone 4, the A4 chip screams.

Those were the biggest additions. Besides that, there is the gyroscope, built-in mic, and a slightly better speaker. The RAM stayed the same at 256mb but that's more than enough for an iPod. That's all the iPad has and I haven't heard too many complaints about lack of RAM. I suspect the iPhone 4 has more RAM because of the phone/messaging app that's always running in the background. Apple added more features and upgrades to the new Touch than all previous generations combined! If some of you wanted the exact features of an iPhone, buy an iPhone!!!

That means paying for an unwanted data plan; and if I'm going to do that, then I may as well get a better OS and carrier - Android and Verizon. :D

 You're free to buy an unsubsidized iPhone 4 for $599 or $699, no? One of my phones is an Android phone and, I don't think the Android OS is better than the iOS at all, just different.

I know highway robbery when I see it.

Sure. Feel free to buy another PDA/PMP with the iPod Touch's capability. Since it's a free economy and you claim the iPod is a bad value proposition, there must be dozens of companies offering similar but cheaper products that are better than the iPod Touch, right? Oh right.... there isn't another product quite like the iPod Touch so you have no frame of reference.

If you are that much concerned about value, I highly recommend you to go wiu the Chinese knock offs with Android that you can get for $100-200 instead of pestering users here. After all Android is the "superior OS" amirite?

If Apple came out with an iPod that had a 12mp camera, 1GB of ram, 1TB of space, 3G, projector, teleport feature all the same size and weight as the current iPod what would they do next year?

Every year they update and every year they try to out do the last update. In order to do so the do as little as possible each time instead of going all out the first time.

I for one am happy that they finally put a camera in the damn thing and I am sure next years will be better.

Let me go over this for the people who don't understand how it works:

1 Apple is a greedy company. Very greedy. In fact they have higher gross margin on their products than any of their direct competitors. Amazingly they will charge the highest price the consumers will pay. That evil Jobs!

2 Being a greedy ****** that they are Apple have a certain % of margin they want to make from each iPod. It will be great for consumers if they put everything from the $700 iPhone into the $300 iPod touch but Apple, again, are greedy people. So they have a very clear budget constraint.

3 So with the budget constraint, they brainstorm. What are the features we want to put into the iPod that will make it attractive to the potential buyers? Cameras? IPS screen? More RAM? You cannot have everything in a device at this price.

4 They do the market research and conclude high resolution screen with two cameras will be the most attractive features for the usual iPod Touch buyers. They consider the IPS and the RAM but that means they don't make enough money - again they are very greedy - and they thin cameras will be a much better selling feature so they sacrifice the RAM and the IPS panel.

5 So how do the users get more? Simple. Don't but it and get a competing product which forces Apple to lower their margin or at least look at the products differently. The problem here is that there literally is nothing quite like the iPod touch on the market yet. There are some announced products from the likes of Samsung and Philips but we don't know if they will be good or how much they will cost. And it's not given they will be cheap either. All the people who expected Samsung's tablet to be cheaper than the iPad were shell-shocked by its European prices and it's not likely to be cheap in the USA either.

So yes by all means go ahead and don't buy the new iPod but please don't show off your ignorance of simple business planning process or keep pestering mostly happy iPod users here. The fact is that the new iPod touch is an amazing mobile device with no peer on the market currently. As a consumer I'd like that to change to but that doesn't give you the right to act like a cry baby in a iPod touch users' forum.

very well said stuff, hope it's not wasted on the usual crowd

Yes, and I'd add that Apple is no different than all kinds of companies; to expect any company in their position to do anything radically different is a bizarre expectation. It's not like Apple makes their decisions out of malice.

If you don't like the so-called "pestering", then stay out of threads with negative comments. They're easily identified by the thread titles.

That's a lame excuse. Not only negative threads are filling up the forum and ruin the atmosphere, most are making comments on threads that aren't identified thread titles, even including the one clearly specified by the thread starter as "(for) people who received/purchased theirs today."

Absolutely. I hate paying more for a product but realistic enough to see that I have no other choice. As I've said, if people were that much concerned about value, they all should just be buying up those cheap Chinese knock off PMP/tablets or at least the Archos ones. But they want something better than those yet want to pay the same amount of money.
