I don't think there's anything wrong with the iMac chin. I thought it was there for the back support and sturdier display.
The chin is both for looks and thermals I think. Apple crammed all the non-display parts into the chin so they could keep it thin but still largely unaffected by the display's heat.

Well... That I would've bought...

The chin is sooooo annoying, specially without the logo...

I also think the "vertical" back of the stand is a good place to locate some components like the motherboard and I/O ports. That way you can keep the all flat screen design. Heat will also dissipate better and away from the LCD panel and weight would be better distributed, less on the screen and more on the base. You can even fit the power supply there and get rid of the brick too...

As another person already posted, if an iPad can have an M1 processor and be ultra think then an iMac can too.

Apple should just produce a 27“ M1 iPad and mount it to a stand. The new design in space gray is just awesome.

“Oh. My. God. Becky, look at that butt. It is so big. It looks like one of those Macrumors guys’ renders. Who understands Macrumors? They only like it because it looks like something John Sculley or Gil Amelio would design. I mean, that butt, it’s just so big. Ugh, I can’t believe it’s just so square, it’s full of ports, I mean, ugh, gross!”

Meanwhile the Studio Display is nearly an iMac itself. That form factor is great. That’s what they should’ve done, put the M1 boards in the Studio Display chassis.
They would charge so much money for that, lol

Studio display itself is already more expensive than an iMac!

So... on the iMac the chin is "iconic" and it would look "generic" without it..

The $1600 Studio Display has no chin.
Have I missed the comments about it looking "generic"?

T
its a monitor. What do you expect?
Apple Monitors never did have the chin.

The iconic device in that setup is the Mac Studio and yes, that has an 'iconic' profile all of its own.

Boy I sure miss the iMac G4 design. That thing was truly beautiful. Eames chair beautiful, Chemex coffee maker beautiful, a true piece of art.

2002's iMac G4, which had equal bezels around the display, was cited as an inspiration for the modification. While moving most of the iMac's internal components to the stand like the G4 was initially considered, placing them directly behind the bottom edge of the display was the method eventually chosen to reduce the device's front profile, while retaining most of its thin design.

The hemisphere was key to the G4’s design. Moving the computer to a butt has functional benefits (deeper ports, for one), but looks dull from the front.

The amazing part is that the iMac always had a chin, even when almost all of the computer was behind the display. It could be nostalgia for the shape of the old Macintosh or they always had this design in mind and are working towards an ideal. Anyhow you can't deny its iconic.

No problem with the chin. I rather have a thinner display with chin than one with a hump or similar behind!

iMac has always had a “chin”, including the very first model. It’s a design statement/feature.

As for their “solution“, there’s no way Apple would build an enclosure with that concavity in it.

The 'chin' allows the posting of sticky notes and other stickers to the iMac. :D Plus doesn't it actually enable the extraordinary speaker system to work as well as it does? When I bought mine, I really thought I'd be getting some add-on externals for sound, as surely the onboard speakers would be crap, right? Nope. They sound brilliant for such a thin unit. How they've managed that, hats off to the people who worked on that. I have other equipment for 'proper' listening, but for having some tunes on as I do stuff, they work just fine.

Apple already has a myriad of plans and designs for launching a chinless Mac, they just haven't done it yet because designed obsolescence has been a major foundation of their business strategy for over a decade. Why launch the Cadillac 5 years early when you can make billions of dollars on the Pinto in the meantime?

The Chin has been the i-Mac's brand identity ever since they abandoned (IMO the superior) lamp design.

It looks like a Dell monitor without the chin.

Halving the chin or something to keep that stripe of something at the bottom to still say "I'm an iMac" would be an improvement though. The chin doesn't need to be so big.

I would love to see a new iteration of the lamp. Those speakers were outstanding and far better than any internal ones to come after. I don't miss seeing crumbs in the keyboard though.

That was my first thought - it looks like a Dell now. I was ambivalent about the chin prior to seeing this, and immediately thought - yep, now the chin makes sense. Hiding it in such a clunky way would be how Dell would work (and there's plenty of examples of this) while the chin still gets to say "There's a computer here. You know it".

Dude… it’s ruining the same chip as the iPad Pro or fan less MacBook Air.

an extra cm or two is manageable if needed
Doesn’t mean the iPad is as fast as other machines that use the same chip but have better thermal dissipation abilities.
