Legit like the chin better honestly, otherwise it kinda looks like a generic display.

It’s a pretty cool bit of work though

And it would look like a display, almost didn’t even read the title when I scrolled through. Apple made the right call.

The number one thing that apple needs to learn about displays in 2023 is that they have to be bigger. Stop with the 24 and 27 inch displays. Everyone in the PC industry has figured out that that’s too small. I would not even look at a single display that is smaller than 32 inches.
Hard to find anything above 4k over 27” right now. Apple likes high density displays.

I'm surprised it took someone this long to make this kind of mod. Personally, I'd like to see an iMac that's so minimal it's just a studio display (or XDR) with a mouse and keyboard.

After 4 minutes of reconnaissance? Tagbert, congrats, for others it takes longer

I think with the iMac, the design of the back is almost as important as the front.

A lot of small businesses have iMacs sitting in employees' desks.

So it's really easy to notice the back of the computer with, of course, the big Apple logo on it. It's free advertisement!

It's probably why they didn't do something like shown in the picture.

The image looks like you barely have any space between the stand and modified iMac. The chin allows the image to be at a more reasonable height, the monitor mod, looks like you be looking down on it, so like have to stick books under it to raise it up.

As a comparison some of the new 32" TVs have this issue, they just aren't high enough with their little stands on a table.

My current iMac M1 sits in the middle of my desk in my living room. The color matches the aesthetics of my house and the smooth flat back of my imac is modern and sleek... This would be horrendous sitting in my living room

Technicians in China have developed an arduous modification to eliminate the 24-inch iMac's "chin," achieving an all-screen design.

Io Technology, a group that makes hardware and chip-related modification and repair videos, posted a video that reveals some of the engineering behind the striking iMac modification on Chinese video sharing website Bilibili. It garnered attention on Twitter after being reposted by users like "DuanRui."

2002's iMac G4, which had equal bezels around the display, was cited as an inspiration for the modification. While moving most of the iMac's internal components to the stand like the G4 was initially considered, placing them directly behind the bottom edge of the display was the method eventually chosen to reduce the device's front profile, while retaining most of its thin design.

First, the iMac was disassembled and the display's "chin" area was cut off, with the edges being ground into the same shape as the top. A new rear casing with an enlarged area for the logic board and ports was created digitally and 3D printed for testing, before being machined out of aluminum and anodized. The iMac's components were then placed into the new housing, with some added measures to mitigate increased thermal constraints.

That reminds me of my 2016 LG B6 OLED TV

Other than the reasons of aesthetics of having a simple rectangular design of the iMac M1 I think what made Apple decide to manufacture the iMac that way is material and manufacturing cost.

Apple milled the iMac from a single piece of aluminum. So any irregularities in its shape would be a loss of material.

This is unlike the the LG TV's design which is from molded plastic. So material cost would be minimized.

The iMac aesthetic makes it immediately recognizable as an iMac since the iMac G5

Last Intel iMac also has the chin.

Removing or reducing the chin would make it look no different than any Lenovo ThinkVision display

It's like the iPhone X notch.

Or the click wheel of the iPod & iPod Classic

You instantly recognize that it is an Apple device.

This is part of branding.

Knock off Android brands copy as closely as legally possible to the design of the iPhone so people who have less than $429 to spend on a smartphone can pretend to have an iPhone as well.

This is cool, but it's really the same problem - something sticking out, be it in the back or on the bottom.
Had I been working for Apple, I would have put the computer inside the base - that way the chinless (and buttless in this case!) screen could be swapped out easily for repair or replacement, and also to allow for multiple sized screens, like a 30" along with the 24".

I still think the previous design is the best. Shrink the bezels and it’s perfect as far as I’m concerned.
