As one of the launch retailers for the iPhone 4, Radio Shack is offering special trade-in deals for existing phones that can be applied to the new iPhone 4.
At a Brooklyn-area RadioShack, a sales representative named Shaquana told eWEEK that only some electronics trade-ins will be allowed in-store, and others will have to be arranged online. Devices that one can safely trade-in at the store, she said, include “phones and game consoles, chargers, old cameras and camcorders.”
Radio Shack's Twitter account has been filling in some blanks on the policy. Edible Apple has been tracking the tweets which revealed that the iPhone 3GS can be traded in for a $200 credit to the new iPhone:
The trade in value on an iPhone 3GS is $200, so if you’re currently toting around last year’s iPhone model and are eligible for an AT&T upgrade any time in 2010, you can pick up the new iPhone 4 for free. While trade-ins can ordinarily be done online, Radio Shack is advising users via its Twitter account that if the iPhone 4 is on your radar, your best bet is to show up in-store.
The iPhone 4 pre orders begin on Tuesday with the final U.S. launch taking place on June 24th.

**So if you pre-order with Radio Shack, will it be available for pick up on the 24th or will you have to wait until the 25th like w/ AT&T?

My local RS manager says he has no idea how many phones they will get. The "pre-order" is only putting your name on a list for the opportunity to buy when they arrive. He also thinks they will be limiting sales to one per person, even if you have more than one iPhone to upgrade.

Pretty funny considering that you can get rid of your 3GS 32GB for ~$450+ (especially if unlocked.)

This will help de-saturate the fleabay/resell market for the 3GS, and will also limit unlocked phones to be in the wild. It's a plus for all parties, including sellers who now have even more incentive to list their phone to make a slight profit, or people who just want to break even.

If you don't mind waiting, I am getting $270 for my 32gb 3gs. Not exactly a trade-in, but its worth checking out.

I talked to the local rat shack at length a few hours ago. They are not taking "pre orders" they will be taking reservations tomorrow at 1pm. They have no idea if they will have any phones on launch day. They are taking these reservations so they can enter them into there system and hopefully they will get the # of phones to match. They are not requiring any deposit because if this. (not a true pre order) they are gving gift cards for iPhones turned in, but every day the price is going down until it reaches $100 for iPhone 3G or $200 for iPhone 3GS on launch day, Bring one in tomorrow they will give you $49 dollars more.

I'm totally screwed thought because in the AT&T system it says I can not get any discount. The AT&T reps on the phone said they could do nothing for me. When i called an AT&T corporate store, they looked at my account and said even though your account says you are not eligible for a discount, every iPhone AT&T customer is eligible for either full discount or early discount and we will overide it when you come in and pre order. Since i want to buy it at rat shack to get the gift card, i don't want to buy it from the corporate store. arrrggg this Sucks!

I'm trying to recall the last time I read a quote in a news story from someone named Shaquana. I don't think it was about iPhones.

eBay can fetch you for a 3GS 32GB (either color) that is used + unlocked + jailbroken more or less $375 all the way to $450. Less for the 16GB.

RadioShack is highway robery. BestBuy has a better value for trade in at $289 for the 32GB 3GS with a BestBuy gift card (which in turn can be used for iPhone 4) or lesser pay if you opt a Mail-In check.
