I think Push email is overrated. I have it through MobileMe, but I also have regular fetch (set to 5 min) through a Gmail account. I can't think of a single time I've needed an email so badly on my iPhone that I couldn't wait 5 minutes for it.

That being said, Apple never advertised push email as a feature of the iPhone, only as a feature of MobileMe. To give the iPhone's email program a lower grade because it doesn't magically force Gmail to push or make MobileMe free is a little silly, don't you think?
First, how did you set your Fetch to 5 minutes? My iPhone doesn't even have that option. It has 15, 30 and hour or manual.

Second, how do you keep the phone charged when doing that? My phone won't last a day like that.

Second, no, I don't think it is silly. Just because you think Push is over rated doesn't have any bearing on MY rating. I happen to think Push Email is awesome, useful and needed.

And yes, I know the phone never stated it could do it. If it did, I would be complaining to Apple about it. I just made the decision to make that sacrifice for the better everything else the phone does over a Blackberry.

Why? If the phone doesn't do everything they wish for it is perfectly legitimate to assign a lower score. The phone can obviously do Push Mail, Apple just wishes to sell an additional service to get the feature.
Exactly.

If you have Gmail, and you want true push email FOR GMAIL, then the iPhone simply is NOT the answer for you, period.

I mean, I love what MobileMe COULD BE, but when it comes to WEB performance and stability, MobileMe can't hold GMail's jock right now. Perhaps if MobileMe gets better, I will break down and pay for it.

But right now, I can't justify paying for email that is substandard in performance to GMail.

And obviously, due to the, well, everything else on the sweet phone, I made the sacrifice and dumped my Curve for the iPhone.

Got me there. Typo. I meant to say 15.

My phone lasts about two days with normal usage with push on for MobileMe, Gmail set to fetch every 15 minutes and bluetooth and 3G on all the time. If yours doesn't even last a day, you should probably look into returning it.

Again, push is server-based, not iPhone-based. Knocking the iPhone's email program for something it is completely capable of, yet you are unwilling to set it up to do, IS silly.

Lack of true Push email for personal users without having to pay for a substandard Email experience (Especially on the Web.)

So, yes, I would say the email "works."

It could just be so much better.

But I understand Apple had to make a dime, hence, the birth of MobileMe.

MobileMe might not work very well on the web but for me it doesn't make a difference, I never even noticed it since I never check MobileMe email on the web, I check it on my laptop or my iPhone, and in both those situations it's flawless. What more could I want?

Again,

When someone posts the way to set up GMail to push to an iPhone, I will set it up. But since it can not be done, I won't hold my breath.

And as far as you going two days with Push, and Gmail fetching, and everything else turned on, well, I simply find it hard to believe. Too many people have posted that they have to charge every day with Push turned on.

And without it, my battery lasts three days.

So my phone is not defective.

The iPhone's "push" is what is defective. Because, quite simply, it isn't really push. It is more like a Fetch with no interval.

What more could you want?

Nothing I guess.

But I want more.

Hence my comments in this thread.

I use web mail exclusively as far as on a computer.

When I am at work, I don't want to just have my phone and nothing else. I have to usually download an attachment and publish the attachment to the web.

My iPhone lasts at least a day and a half with push on. I also have location services always on and turn 3G on when I need to.

My main email account is Gmail, I just forward all my emails to MobileMe so I can get them with Push on my iPhone. If I need to check my emails on the web I check them on Gmail.

Well, I thought about that option.

But that too me is kind of annoying to have to do.

What if you reply from your phone? Won't a reply back to that reply only go to MobileMe?

Or do you forward MobileMe back as well?

Maybe I'm just not sure what you mean but I don't think it does. Whenever I send an email from my iPhone or reply from my iPhone it still uses my Gmail server so I think a reply back still goes to Gmail.

I owned a Blackberry and Im curious about your statement. I bought a Blackberry Pearl having NEVER used a Blackberry. I got it home and it didnt show HTML email. Most of my emails looked like jumbled code.., I searched and found that if I paid $30 I could add HTML functionality to my Blackberry...as I looked further I was shocked at the prices of Blackberry enhancement software prices. I ended up returning the Pearl.

A 9 for email?

Really?

Have you ever owned a Blackberry?

I am surprised anyone would give the email a 9 unless they are just Apple Fans trying to be generous.

I must not understand you you have your phone set up.

Do you have both accounts set up on the phone?

I thought you just had MobileMe on your phone, in which case, how does the phone send from Gmail?

And to the other asking about my comments, I just want GMail push to my iPhone.

It is a simple request really. :D

But I admit my comment was a bit harsh. I mean, the email LOOKS great on the iPhone.

I just want the functionality.

I only have MobileMe on my iPhone but I changed the Outgoing Mail Server to smtp.gmail.com and all the emails are sent from Gmail.

If you need i can walk you through all the steps to make this work. It's not hard.

Nah, but I appreciate the offer.

I think I saw a write up on that setup already.

But I wasnt sure I wanted to do it that way because then the emails would be in both in boxes and what not.

Before, when I was on the free trial of MobileMe, I just forwarded and deleted from Gmail.

I would still be using that setup with the Web MobileMe didn't have so many bugs.

I think I may just wait until they get it better and then subscribe to that and call it a day.

1-10, 10 being the best...How is your overall experience with the iphone 3g?

How do you like the service, web, email, text, camera and reception for phone calls?

Service - is that Apple's service or AT&T's service? I'm not sure so I can't rate on that.

Web - 10

E-mail - 10

Text - 9

Camera - 9

Reception - This is based on your location, but for me it's 10.

Overall experience with my iPhone, It's a 9. I can't give a perfect score since I knew beforehand this wasn't a phone that could handle everything that a man could ask for but certainly I really love it. All its features and capabilities are just amazing, not to mention that App store which is a big plus. Trust me you'll also love it (just check AT&T's coverage in your area first)

As a side note: People whine because humans are insatiable. You give them something, they still ask for more or of a different kind.

Just got it and just started okaying with the dang thing. Overall I am impressed. The touch pad keys are easy to get used, inlandscape anyway. Overall I'd give it a 8.5. I'd give it a 9.5 if I could flip everything to landscape to type, but thats a known issue.

Yea, that would sure be nice Tufel...

Oh, and make sure you go get Firemail from the App Store.

Not the most intuitive app because you have to type your email and then "send it" to the mail application.

But it does allow you to compose your emails or replies in Landscape and is a temporary solution until Apple (hopefully) makes it native to the Mail app.

Exactly.

As soon as Gmail offers push service (as MobileMe and Yahoo do), you will be able to use it on the iPhone. If you want to complain about that, talk to Google, not Apple.

This argument is ridiculous. I rated the iPhone on the way it worked for me (and me alone) yet you had to take exception to my opinion. I don't care what you choose to believe or not believe. If you have to charge your phone every three hours then it probably isn't working correctly, but if you are happy with that sort of performance, then rock on.

Way to hyper exagerate.

Who said three hours?

More people have reported the exact same findings as me, so if my phone is screwed up, then Apple should be embarrassed at the amount of faulty Hardware they let through quality control.

VERY embarrassed.

And as far as PUSH with Gmail, heck, I would settle for Apple making the MobileMe web suite not suck badly.
