My 5s does not rattle at all, i love the built quality of the 5s( silver one ) i got the SE gold 64gb on launch day and that thing feels so cheap, i lay the phone in the table and it sounds like all the pieces inside the phone are coming appart. And lets not talk when it vibrates. Im paying 500 dollars for a phone, not for a toyRUs phone. So i returned yesterday. Gonna wait till they are back in stock and try again.

I think the consensus may well be they're all like that. Looks like while on the outside the phone looks the same as the 5S, it's not built as well.

Some SE owners report they have no rattling buttons, others say they have this issue. I will unbox my SE later today and let you know how the build quality is.

Guys, I have just unboxed my new iPhone SE (spacegray, 64Gb) and guess what: not only the sleep/wake button rattles, but also volume buttons. And it is a very annoying rattling sound that you hear even when you rotate your phone (a person standing 2-3 meters away from you can also clearly hear it). Try to walk and capture a video and you will have this noise in the video itself.

These buttons in the SE appear to move from one side to another and are very loose (the wake/sleep button especially) and when you put your finger on them, rattles stop. Terrible! iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 that we have here do not make these rattling noises at all and all buttons are extremely sturdy after many years of usage. This rattle of the SE makes it feel very cheap and fragile... similar to a toy phone. You put it on the table and hear this cheap sound of your iPhone falling apart.

I have also discovered a dust particle under the camera lens. This phone goes back to Apple without any doubt.

I need to say that I am, however, quite impressed with the screen - it has no scratches, dust, dead pixels, yellow areas - and the body of the phone - it looks simply perfect without any imperfections or scratches.

Too bad, Apple. It seems I will be waiting for the release of the iPhone 7 which will undoubtedly introduce new issues that will eventually be solved in the 7S. Maybe, it is actually time to think about switching to Android: there are some very attractive offers out there.

...I look forward to opening mine next week. Or I could just cancel the order before it's even left China and just get another 5S :D

Lets see what tomorrow brings, i'm not optimistic though

Wish it didn't bother me Alec, but unfortunately it does. I've always been fussy about my phones though

This kind of thread reminds me of imperfections in life - everyone should be given phones with some imperfection, noted on the box. That is what you get, simple :) take it or leave it.

Hey Guys, I just signed in to share my experiences with the rattling buttons with you. I also got the new SE and the sleep/wake button rattles.

My iPhone 5 used to rattle when I bought it. It didn’t bother me back in the days. Sometime (a couple of months after the purchase!?) it stopped and the buttons got sturdy. I suggest it started getting solid because of dust/fuzz!? I checked it yesterday and the buttons of my old 5 are still working and feeling strong.

I guess it is an issue that most of the 5, 5s and SE phones have due to their construction.

The funny thing is, I read somewhere that if you blow air (like mouth-to-mouth respiration ;) ) right through your sleep/wake button, it will stop rattling.

I know it sounds stupid. And it is stupid. But I tried it and it really stopped. Unfortunately, just for a couple of hours. I conclude that the air pressure inside tightens up the buttons. It also proofs that it is not waterproof at all in this area (I know Apple don’t assert waterproofness). But as I said it is not a lasting solution and also kind of embarrassing that some people are forced to use “lifehacks“ to try solving apples homemade construction problems.

In my experience the buttons will get sturdy by time anyway. But this is of course no excuse for apple to let the buttons rattle in the first place.

Otherwise I just love the SE and its small size. Came from the “huge” 6. No way I’m ever getting an android phone.

I will keep it because it doesn’t bother me that much and I’m pretty sure that most of the SE’s are slightly rattling right out of the factory. If I hadn’t read about it on a forum, I probably wouldn’t have taken notice.

And if it gets older the problem probably will resolve itself thanks to my dusty pockets.

Again, no apologies for Apple though

Thanks, PhilHo, for sharing this with us! The SE should have been designed in such a way as to not requiring these life hacks. I didn't have to blow air into my 4S and 5 that have no rattling buttons and their buttons still work amazingly well and are as sturdy as on day one... and these phones are used on a daily basis.

Why not just use the phone for how it was designed to be used? That seems kind of crazy, blowing into a phone to see if something rattles.

Everyone has a choice and you chose to forgo the SE, which is your right, but what happens when the next "gate" shows up in the 7, will you hold off until the 7s? Then of course that will have issues, so on and so forth.

My advice, use the phone, enjoy the phone, don't sweat the small stuff. Most people put cases on the phone and many cases solve the power button rattle.

It seems you really wanted the SE, and now you're losing out on a great phone just for something that is so trivial. Nothing in this world is perfect, we are imperfect beings, and we make imperfect products. Be content and life will go a lot more pleasantly :)

@maflynn Makes a good point. It is easy to get too focused on the small stuff. I guarantee after a couple of days, and if it's in a case, you won't notice it. If you really want the SE then you should get it.

Obviously I cannot really talk, as sent mine back for the rattle, but I was always on the fence about the SE. In that I feel that Apple should have designed a new chassis and maybe snuck the new touchID in there. But, my old phone was showing it's age, the camera was broken and the battery life was rubbish. So I took a punt. I have another one on order, but may well cancel that. You on the other hand seemed to really want the SE, so just pick on one up :)

My iPhone SE rattles too. But I can't defend apple at all. I think they just dont give a ... about user experience anymore. Even the buttons on my nexus 4 are solid and don't rattle at all, after three years of use. Buttons on my ipad air 2 are also solid, and I dont see any reason why the buttons on the SE should rattle. Every 150€ android phone has better buttons than this.

In my view, Steve Jobs and his passion for technology taught us that it is possible to have a nearly flawless device (yes, I know... the iPhone 4 - among others - and the famous adagium "you hold it wrong"... we all make mistakes) or at least to strive to attain that unattainable level of perfection he was always occupied with. It has been already said so many times by others but it is all about money today and selling as many iDevices as possible: yes, I know that Apple is a company and not a charity and that the only thing companies do and want to do is making financial profit. But still, if a business has a person such as Steve running it, priorities can shift from merely making money to following some great ideals that formed the basis of Apple and its philosophy when it was created.

I agree 100%. Everytime I use iOS 9 and see these stuttering animations I think that jobs would have never ever allowed this garbage. Jobs was all about perfection, while Cook is all about money.

This is exactly the kind of greed that makes me hate corporatism. Trying to squeeze every single penny of profit out of every product. This is where a COO running a company thinks mainly about margins and market penetration with products. There's a big difference in the mentality that a COO needs versus a CEO. One needs to be cautious and safe. The other needs to innovative and bold/risky.

Yep, I agree. I cant understand why money is so important for some people. Is it really worth to build in cheap buttons, just to save stupid 5$? Apple should always try to make their product 100% perfect, because its Apple. But I think its not apple any more, its now a mainstream $$$ company.

As a user of OS X 10.0, I have to disagree with that assessment. Apple has rolled out some buggy software under Steve Jobs. Another example - iDisk (predecessor to iCloud drive) was horrible and barely worked.

Just as a belated follow up. I got a new white/silver and the power button is exactly the same.

Add a gasket next time, geniuses.

When I got my Five I couldn't wait to get it home to check out the yellow shading in the screen and hold the 'phone up to my ear to listen to the rattling buttons. So good :)

What absolute nonsense... the 'phone performs its functions perfectly. I seldom see an all-white screen so if it is discoloured I wouldn't know, and when the 'phone is against my ear I am listening to the telephone conversation not trying to hear buttons rattling.

I hadn't realised that so many OCD people existed, and they are all here in the 'happy rattlers' forum.

I have just upgraded to the Six S and I will never know if it is yellow and rattling. It just isn't that important to me. What is important is that the 'phone is a superb instrument and a lovely piece of fine technology. Apple, of course :D

I'll take a rattling phone SE over an ugly shifting front facing camera look of the 6 everyday of week. Oh yes clicky screen too.

Many of my 5s phones rattled when shaken. Get a life folks.

I have held an iPhone 5 in my hands that did not rattle at all. It seems that Apple had fixed this problem in their 6/6S series and reintroduced it in the SE. What a shame.

I believe that because the 6 and 6s were a different design it was fixed but the se has the same design and body as the 5s so it would make sense that It does Apple should have fixed it but probably didn’t my 5s didn’t but my se does although I keep it in. A mophie so I don’t hear it anyways
