It is not clear if Apple will introduce RCS support during the iOS 18 beta testing period or hold the feature until the fall public launch of the update, but we do know that it is indeed tied to iOS 18 at this point.

Anyone know if RCS is working in the first dev beta? This would be very useful for me.

I'm guessing you also never use public wifi and aren't on any social media apps like Facebook or tiktok?

Heck, are you sure MacRumors is secure? I think you should leave, your personal information on here is at risk.

Never used public wifi in my life.
Don't use social media.
I am very confident MacRumors has robust security protections in place.

I think you should just not use smartphone or get off grids in general.

It isn’t like iOS app won’t share information between apps.

On iOS, it is precisely they won't share information between apps without granting permissions.

Android folders are wide open for snooping, although Samsung does have their own Secure Folders application if you're like most people on Android and use a Galaxy device. There's also GrapheneOS for Pixels that shows how security should have been done by Google.

I thought RCS was stupid before but the best thing to come out of it is to get Google to shut the **** up.

Apple today confirmed that it plans to implement support for Rich Communication Services, or RCS, in iOS 18 this fall. Apple software chief Craig Federighi confirmed RCS support when introducing new features for the iPhone at the WWDC keynote event.

We've known about Apple's plans to adopt RCS since last November, but Apple only gave a vague "later in 2024" timeline for adoption so it was unclear exactly when the feature might roll out. RCS replaces SMS/MMS as the default communication protocol on the iPhone.

RCS has already been adopted by Google, U.S. smartphone carriers, and other companies, so Apple is a little late to the party. It doesn't change much for iMessage, but it does overhaul the way iPhones interact with Android devices. RCS improves texting with Android users, adding support for features that have previously been limited to iMessage. Some of the additions:

  • Support for higher resolution photos and videos.
  • Support for larger file sizes and file sharing.
  • Audio messages.
  • Cross-platform emoji reactions.
  • Real-time typing indicators.
  • Read receipts.
  • Ability to send messages over cellular or Wi-Fi (SMS is cellular only). There is no cost to send an RCS message over Wi-Fi.
  • Improved group chats.

It is not clear if Apple will introduce RCS support during the iOS 18 beta testing period or hold the feature until the fall public launch of the update, but we do know that it is indeed tied to iOS 18 at this point.

I'm more excited about this enhansement than any other that was teased.

The one thing that will add value to my interoperability experience :)

Everything else I use in iOS 17.x.y.z works well-enough for me.

ew no thanks. I'm turning this off the moment it's introduced.

RCS is terrible. wish Apple would not support this. it's confusing as hell and locks in consumers to carriers. who thought this was a good idea? terrible protocol 🤦‍♂️
Is that sarcasm?

Does this mean that Apple will stop with the nefarious practice of deliberately downgrading pic/vid attachments to woeful resolution when sending texts to Android phones?

Interestingly, because RCS messages often counted against your monthly allotment of text messaging in many countries, people switched to other apps for text communication. Hence the rise of operating system-agnostic apps like WhatsApp, LINE, WeChat and even Facebook Messenger.
That’s not the reason why these apps become successful it’s because you can’t do anything with sms/mms is so basic & you get charged extra for sending pictures.

This is the funniest thread ever. Just reading through and then noticing the suspended accounts. I just don't get the mentality. They're improving the messaging experience between you and people that bought a different phone than you and some people are acting like the sky is falling. People don't want to lose that little bit of exclusivity that makes them feel special I guess. They're just phones guys... they're just phones.

The superiority complex among these people is amazing. I am glad I don't know anyone personally who is so nutty that they judge people based on color of their messages or phone usage.

I think Apple adding support for RCS is going to be one of those great underrated features for people like myself who have friends and family members who use Android. SMS is not secure and should always be a last resort in my opinion so good on Apple for supporting it and for Google for complaining about it.

RCS messages sent to and from Android phones using Google Messages are E2E encrypted. RCS messages coming in from another source are encrypted in transit, but it's not E2E encrypted. I'd assume since Apple is just using the universal RCS profile and not adding an encryption extension onto it like Google did it won't be E2E encrypted.

So for example if I'm on an Android phone using Google Messages to another Android phone it'll be E2E encrypted. If I'm messaging an iPhone it'll have all of the same features, minus E2E encryption. Even without E2E encryption RCS is still a much more secure way to text versus SMS/MMS which literally sends plain text the whole way and could be easily intercepted by anyone.
Thanks for the reply.

How would the encryption be for Group Chat with iPhones and Android phones?
