The 3GS was going to be $399 since I had bought a subsidized Curve for like $199 with a $100 rebate or something like that. But now, according to att.com, the phone showing on my account is a 2g iPhone, when I am really just 12 months into a Curve contract.

Well, I have no real explanation of that. But then again, I'm not into trying to find a work around for the rules. If it worked congrats, but you may be the exception rather than the rule.

Also, becareful AT&T doesn't charge your account the prorated amount of the curve on your next statement. They probably won't, but I'd set that money aside just in case.

all im saying is just show us the receipt (block out all personal info) and the proof your using a 2g on ur account.. cuz so far your only one of what I hopped would be many..

You also have to remember a lot of the people who upgraded to 3G's didn't keep their original. If I had upgraded to the 3G, I don't know if I would have kept the original either.

NC boy, hey! I spent the better part of my life in Fayetteville, NC. In fact I'll be flying back there this weekend. Glad to see it worked out, hopefully AT&T doesn't "wise-up" on this. Maybe it'll work next year too!

where did they go? thanks for posting that by the way.. I would like for someone who has a 3g to try it me know now. haha.. there may be something to this..

I left my email one on of them and was too lazy to re-edit as it is almost 2 AM and I am ready to go to bed. So I have been proven, the pics don't need to stay.

I can vouch for you adammull - whether or not someone else wants to believe me is another story.

Again, I saw the pics as described. Order was placed on 8 June 09 for a 16GB Black 3GS. He paid $224 after fees/taxes. (didn't pay attention to the breakdown other than $199 for the iPhone 3GS)

What pics?

He had posted pics of his account page on att.com. He took them down as he left an email address on one of them and was too tired to re-edit the pictures. I can't him on that either. Maybe he'll re-edit them tomorrow for you folks and repost.

Like I said, I saw them and I can vouch for what he has posted on the forums.

I saw them and they were legit from what I saw.. It def worked for him.. but he went 1st gen iPhone > BB Curve> then reactivated his 1st gen and by doing so became eligible..

I'm wondering if it will work if you have a 3g.. I'm thinking maybe it was because he had a curve..

That's possible. If someone with a 3G and an original is out there that can try it, that'd be great. Or, like I said if someone with a 3G that lives in Denver, Highlands Ranch, Englewood, etc... we can try it out with my original.

I have that chance but I'm trying to see if anyone else will try it first.. I'm cautious because I don't want it to extend my eligibility anymore and add an activation fee to my account.. Think it'll do that?

It wouldn't extend your eligibility, and it wouldn't add an activation to your account. (at least it shouldn't on the activation part)

see theres always that "what if" or "maybe".. would anyone try this??

After thinking about it, I'm positive it won't. For example, if you were to get a replacement iPhone and you activate it through iTunes, you don't get charged any fees, it doesn't change your eligibility.

IF by some crazy happening occurs, and you are charged or eligibility is adjusted. You can always call AT&T and tell them you were merely switching to your original since you sold your 3G to be able to buy the 3GS.

So should I use a different Sim card (I got with my first iPhone) or the one thats in my 3G that I'm using now?

EDIT: If it won't change my eligibility then whats the point? I'm still thinking about how it would work. Seems it just may

I tried this tonight. I have a 3g iPhone and am only eligible for the early upgrade price. my girlfriend uses my old iPhone on tmobile. So i took my legit AT&T sim card and put it in my old 2g iphone. I waited a few minutes, then looked at my account on att.com and it showed I had a regular iPhone. But when I checked eligibility for upgrades, it still told me it would be 399 for a 16GB iPhone 3GS.

Not to say it won't work for some. But it didn't work for me.

You can use the one in your 3G. I would however not go back to your 3G if it does work, at least until you know the 3GS has shipped. If you plan to pick it up, just use your original until you have the 3GS in your hands.

Did you actually activate it in iTunes?

It won't extend your eligibility, if it works, it will allow you to be eligible immediately.

So did you go through the whole iTunes activation process like you did with the 3g and 1st gen? if not try that and let me know because I think I'm about to try it.
