Google Now is by far the most impressive thing Google is doing in the mobile space right now.

This is why Forstall is out! Expect new things.

Great Video. In order to keep up the pace, Apple needs to move away from the 2 year cycle of introducing a new device.(the "s" model does not count in my opinion). If they do not release IOS7 with iPhone 6 by next September, Google with the help from Samsung/LG/HTC will be viewing Apple in the rear view mirror. At the rate Google is innovating, it will not take long to eliminate the gap in providing a polished OS.

Fine a lot of those features I don't care about. But at least they innovate, make something new!

Sounds like a terrible use of share holder capital and company resources. LOL.

You don't "innovate" for the sake of innovation. You innovate for a tangible product that people will use.

Unless you are someone like Steve Jobs who didn't care what people would use, and instead dictated what people will use through innovative products.

Adding a two finger swipe is not innovating.

But it is definitely a (seemingly) simple feature that would make the iOS usability that much more fluid.

For example, why can we swipe down for notifications, but not swipe up for the task bar? I would absolutely LOVE that. Double pressing the home button is just unnecessary when Apple themselves have proved that one finger swipes for a system wide feature are possible while at the same time being immensely useful and not intruding.

I've been doing more and more research between android and apple and I'm finding more reason to go back to android. This video really does top it. Think I'm going to look into getting the Nexus 7 or another android based tablet.

You know what else is a great big waste of shareholder capital? Being stagnant and letting others leave you in their wake
Look at RIM

If you don't put your neck out there and play, and potentially make mistakes, you're not going to come up with something great.
Apple did this a while back. Remember the G4 cube? They played around. The iPhone was a big risk. They played around. The cube didn't work out, the iPhone did. But the iPhone wouldn't have come out if they didn't stick to playing around

Truthfully… There's only two things keeping me from switching to Android or Windows Phone 8:

1. Apple's app ecosystem (IMO, iOS gets the best apps). The entire point of smart-phones are the apps. No great apps, no real need.

2. The fact that neither Google or Microsoft make their own phones that guarantee compatibility with future updates the instant that they're released.

The fact is, I'm getting tired of Apple not iOS. I don't care about widgets, and I don't find the UI boring but it seems Apple's priorities are in feeding us BS. Hopefully the next iPhone is not a half-baked "S" device and iOS 7 is a lot more than features that should have been included in prior versions of iOS.

Nexus phones is as close to "making their own" as it gets - I have a Nexus S that still get all the new versions, it's a selective argument (and a little wrong).

Were you able to update the day the software was released? If not, how long did you have to wait?

Yes, I've had every upgrade (it was born with 2.3) available on release day. Since the notifications was enhanced it just pops up there when they are available.

Android is getting more tempting every time...

People keep on saying "if not broken, don't fix it".

They probably either too scared of change or don't think Apple could create a better version.

Hopefully Apple makes iOS better. I think its safe to say that iOS 6 did not meet the requirement of a great update. For one both Siri and Maps, the two main key features were lacking. The others were simply to little like shared photo streams or should have been added a long time ago like FaceTime 3G.

Great, thanks. I think I'm going to buy a Nexus 7 to get a feel for Android and see where it goes from there.

No I haven't no, it's difficult?

I don't own an Android device personally, but everything Google does is to attempt universal compatibility as much as possible, as their presence is required to maintain advertising dollars. There are a number of people on this forum that use Macs + Android devices. I'm sure if you know your requirements, people can suggest IOS to Android equivalents.

at the end of the day, it's kind of a shame that even thought apple makes an unbelievable amount of money through high profit margins on the phones that they make and sell, they're not doing as great in their stuff as the other team that isn't making much money in the phones they sell.

kind of counter intuitive?

Apple has got the simplicity down. When you use an iOS device you "get" it in an instant.

Android on the other hand is a bit more overwhelming, although it has taken a lot of steps (and that it's now a more consistent OS helps a lot).

Android clearly wins on features and customization, iOS is behind in that aspect.

Apple should add *some* more features and customization. Jailbraking is so popular for a reason. They should provide some of what the users like about android. And they must do it without compromising the simplicity.

It might not be easy, but I have no sympathy for Apple. They have as many resources as they want there is no excuse as to why they aren't moving forward at a faster pace.

Really cool stuff! I liked the photosphere feature and lock screen widgets. I think we'll see innovation now that Ive is in charge. Forestall did all he could with iOS so it's time for some new blood.

Btw it was a little funny to see them talk about glass front and back and a chamfered edge. Sounded familiar.

Wait, it has a glass back AND no LTE?

But but but.... I though a year ago those things practically made a phone untouchable!!!

/sarcasm

I am part of Apple's ecosystem. MacBook, iPhone, iPad, apple tv
Don't want to leave because of how seamless it is.
BUT check this!!!

I mean come on! That video makes the apple software team look lazy! What have they been doing with their time???

Fine a lot of those features I don't care about. But at least they innovate, make something new! From things like making the camera settings more efficient, to the widgets on the main screen with the shazam-like functionality....cmon they beat apple hands down if we can be honest! How has apple constantly made their system better?
I'm finding it harder and harder to believe that Apple's in this for the win!

looks refreshing..have to admit...it's not 100 percent wow..but still good..
I rather hear what they say then listening to john. Ive saying..." as you can see.." or "when you think about iPhone..." with his angry face.:D

2 finger swiping would defeat the purpose of one handed use

Everything you just said x1000.

Gorilla Glass back is different than just a regular glass back.

That was pretty impressive. Funny to see all the subtle digs at apple and the ipad :p

If I were to buy a tablet now it would without a doubt be a Nexus 7, but given no price limit I would choose iPad 4. Partly for integration with my current ecosystem but mainly design.

I like the customisation and many features on android, but ultimately iOS does more than I need from a mobile OS and offers good integration with my other devices.

If I had both I would use nexus for playing with/doing cool stuff/customising etc. but I think I would find the iPad just easier and more useful for things I would actually be doing :p

Oh and apps :p
