In case there was any doubt about the increased horsepower found in the iPad 2, our sister site Touch Arcade has posted a video demonstrating a forthcoming update to Firemint's Real Racing 2 HD that will bring support for full 1080p video out while also driving a separate display on the iPad itself.Using the video out feature of an iPad 2, Real Racing 2 HD will be able to be displayed on a big screen in full 1080p resolution while the device's 10-inch touchscreen shows a track map and race statistics.

This is the first indication we've seen of an iOS game taking advantage of the iPad 2's ability to render out at a full 19201080 HD resolution. On an HDTV, Real Racing 2 HD will run full screen with no black borders and at native 1080p resolution, without scaling.According to Firemint, Real Racing 2 HD runs at a "silky smooth" 30 frames per second in this mode with precision control for a more console-like gaming experience than ever. Apple has touted the iPad 2 as offering up to twice the CPU performance and up to nine times the graphics performance of its predecessor, opening the door for significantly improved app performance, particularly when it comes to fast-action gaming titles.

While the iPad 2 now offers users the option to output content through the TV out adapters in 1080p via upscaling, Real Racing 2 HD appears to be the first app set to debut the combination of native 1080p video out while driving a second display on the iPad itself.

It is unknown exactly when the new feature will make its debut, as Firemint has only said that it is coming in the "next major update" to Real Racing 2 HD.

The original iPad is only just hitting 1 year old. At least put in the article the status of the game for the iPad 1...does it work...doesnt it?

iPad 1 does not support HDMI out, so I'm assuming no, it doesn't work.

I recall some of the naysayers around here not even a year ago stating that such a device would never be suitable for gaming. And here we are. With HD output to your TV.

Vision, people. Vision.

Not the best control setup.

Playing that game with the HDMI dongle thingy hanging off an iPad looks, um, not ideal. Now, if it could stream it using AirPlay.

The Future of video games? This looks awesome, and works great with a racing game that can show you the course on the iPad. Just wish I could run this on my Original Ipad :(
Will this work over Airplay with the Apple TV, obviously in 720p?

what I thought would/could happen with iPhone/iPads/iPodTouches. With Airplay this would be even better. pretty much how i had envisioned it with teh iDevice as teh Gyro-scopic motion joystick

Wow! This looks insane!! I didn't realise that the iPad was so powerful!

Makes me want one more now :(!

There's still the practical limitations of using a touchscreen as a control device, though. It's never going to be as tactile as a controller with buttons and joysticks. Not to mention having the HDMI adaptor sticking out of the side of the iPad while you're holding it to play games...

Apart from that, I'm glad to see the iPad is able to hold its own as a gaming machine.

At this pace the iPad3 will come close to the PS3 in terms of performance when it is released next year...

I'm really impressed by the increasing performance of the ARM architecture. Mind you all this is coming from a tiny SoC which doesn't require cooling or any substantial power intake.

Impressive indeed!

Maybe we'll be seeing ARM based Desktops by the end of the decade... or sooner?

iPad 1 does support HDMI out. Use the new Apple Digital AV adapter. Pretty amazing for Apple to "add" a feature to an old device ;)

The iPad 1 can't do *mirroring* over HDMI (at least not without jailbreaking)- but that's not what's going on here anyway. This could be done on an iPad 1, but of course it would be limited to 720p on the external screen, and probably not be able to maintain much of a framerate even then (for this game).

But less cpu/gpu intense games could run on the iPad 1 in a dual screen fashion if a developer really wanted to.

The iPad 1 does support HDMI out. I have the adaptor and checked it out with a movie. It doesn't support mirroring but it does support the output.

Once they enable the use of other iOS devices as wireless controllers then i'll be interested.

Oh man---I got the iPad to get the kids off the TV. Now I'm going to have to get another TV!

And just like that, Apple has snuck itself into the living room game console biz.

Ahaha, it's so much like a DS, I don't even.
