It's going to disappoint us guys...

1. It's have a better camera, 5mp... maybe better video, maybe a flash.
2. iChat probably won't come to iphone, probably for the next iPad
3. GPS/Maps will still suck, no turn by turn with voiceover... apple would rather you spend money in the app store for that.
4. Better screen higher res.. whoopty doo
5. Hopefully a better frigging external speaker and vibration... so sick of missing calls and alerts.
6. It'll be faster... ok cool

I agree with all of these points. People take what they have for granted and don't even realize it.

I LOVE the iPhone and can't wait for the next one even though the updates will be few and far between.

1) Higher Res Screen
2) Better Battery
3) Faster
4) Better Camera

Those updates will be fine, but I would expect Apple to think outside the box and include new functionality/features that us consumers haven't thought of.

I guess we'll have to wait and see...

I want all of those features as well.

I think this is probably all we'll see (your numbers 1-4). I'd say 1, 2, and 4 have a probability of 99% and number 3 a probability of about 90%.

All I REALLY want in this new iPhone is:

1) A new design that is less prone to scratches.
2) Improved call quality and speakerphone quality
3) Improved battery life
4) Better screen/HD
5) Better camera
6) A messaging light indicator to let you know when you've received a new text/e-mail/missed call/voicemail, etc.
7) Improved voice control
8) Being able to stream movies in Safari (I know we won't get Flash)

Two things I'd really like, but we probably won't get, are full voice turn-by-turn GPS for free like on the Droid, and iChat/video calls.

I don't know what to expect with the new iPhone honestly. We saw a sneak peek last week of the software, but apple always holds back on a few key features (video, compass, voice commands). The one difference that's happened this time around is that SERIOUS competitors have risen in the last 4 months. All of the sudden you are seeing some amazing hardware running Android software.

I have to wonder if it's almost too late for Apple to make any changes to the next iPhone. What I mean is, what if they had iPhone 4 set prior to seeing all these new devices and they can't or don't have the time to compete with them for this next gen.

I think this is a key year for apple. I think the majority of iPhone owners are using either 1st gen or 3G models and will be looking for something new this summer. You've got some amazing stuff coming out in a couple months to compete with the iPhone. Evo, HTC Incredible, and I'm sure many other devices.

I havent used an android device for more than 5 minutes, but I can tell you it's not bad at all. It's actually got some great features.

I really want to stick with Apple, but if there are some better devices out there for my needs after iPhone 4 is announced, it is possible that I might switch.

I would agree this is a key year. The iPhone is the undisputed champ in popularity and owners how 'love' their phones. But the competition has closed the gap significantly. Last July the Droid was a blip in the rear review mirror. Now the competition is riding the bumper.

If Apple rolls out another modest upgrade, that gives their competition another 12 months to really push out some functionality.

But Apple's trump card is a HUGE customer base that truly believes the iPhone is the easiest and most functinal smart phone ever. A lot of that core group would be hard pressed to give another phone. Think about all the people you know who had little interest in smart phones until they got an iPhone. I bet their eyes would glaze over at the thought of learning another device. Those people are 'in the bag' for Apple. Where a lot of the tech savvy people would consider another platform...a large contingent of Apple's core base is set for a long time.

Apple has sold more than 50 million iPhones in 3 years. I doubt they are in danger of falling behind anyone. People will buy it for the name alone.

Excellent point, kinda anti-climactic in terms of what to expect, but good point.

I will buy it if:

It has a faster CPU/ more ram.

Better battery life

Better camera ( flash PLEASE!!!! )

Better screen

I know that my first 2 wants don't go together, faster and more life don't like each-other lol.

Nice addons would be: Thinner, new formfactor.

An underclocked A4 should accomplish this.

Personally, I would only like a few things. The main thing being that the next iPhone will go back to the aluminium. I would love it to have that but if they stick with plastic, I wouldn't mind. A slightly better camera would be nice and a tiny bit more processing power+RAM would be nice as well.

And here we go. Just wanted to post a quick "I told you so."

Haha, you seriously think it won't have a better, higher-resolution screen? lol.

Yes I do believe that.

If there's one thing you can count on for the new iPhone in terms of hardware changes, the absolute most likely would be a better screen. It's the major downside of the iPhone's hardware now.

Higher res at the current form factor mean things will be smaller. They'd have to make a taller/wider iPhone. Big no-no. iPhone is perfect at this point in terms of size. Also, this is a realistic analysis. We all know realistically, Apple doesn't adopt things fast, they take their sweet time to do so.

I'd bet a new iPhone that it has a higher-res screen. People won't buy the new iPhone unless it is significantly better in terms of hardware. Since every one of Apple's competitors have a high-res screen in their flagship phones, Apple will need one too. It's a huge disadvantage now. It makes a giant difference.

Sounds more like:

Viaos, Envys, XPS have Blu-Ray! Apple has to adopt it or they would be at a disadvantage!

I guarantee the next iPhone has a higher resolution screen. Bookmark this page for when it comes out. You can quote me if I'm wrong. I'm 100% sure.

If you say so...
