You're really padding that post count, aren't you?
Not intentional. Just trying to catch up on the 600 posts added to this thread since I went to bed last night. Almost there too. LOL I figured this thread would grow fast, but not sure even I could have pictured this much, this fast.

Xbox is a loooong, loooooooooooong way from enterprise swervers!

Yeah but they're still Microsoft...

And Xbox 360 will still be running a custom variant of Windows (instead of some new OS exclusive to the Xbox 360).

A new line of PC's?

Apple PC's. Just like a Dell PC, only running Mac OS 10.4 on an intel chip. Apple PC's will look nicer, run windows software, and have intel chips. These PC's can be sold at more retailers and will increase market share. Apple will offer free conversion software for developers.

Or Mac OS 10.4 is going to be available for the PC in the fall. Sony will have a line of Tiger PC's. HP will also be first to offer Tiger PC's. This may explain why Tiger Direct was so pissed off by "Tiger".

Apple continues to produce PPC macs.

From what I understand Intel does not own the rights to produce the PPC processor. Nor is it worth their time to purchase them.
Apple, however, likely has some say in the production, and Steve Jobs likely worked out some contractual agreements with Moto / IBM to allow others to produce the chips if they could not meet Apples demands / deadlines. See link to anonymous post a few posts back. Stevie is a VERY SMART businessman.

I believe you'll find that 300W+ figure is for the whole system. It's simply not possible to dissipate that much heat off of something as small as a CPU core without some kind of active refridgeration (like phase change cooling).

A recent review I read of the Pentium D 840 put the load system power consumption at 285W+ vs. 200W for the equivalent single core Pentium, and less than that that for the Athlon64 X2 4800+.

I'd agree that AMD's desktop chips are much, much better than Intel's - more efficient per clock cycle, cooler and much lower power consumption. It's interesting to note that most of AMD's chips are fabricated by IBM though ;)

I'd disagree with macuser05 that the Pentium-M is a poor architecture. It runs ridiculously cool, and is significantly more powerful clock-for-clock than even an Athlon64.

Tragic for MS

On the lighter side, I hope this rumor is not true.

I'd hate to see Mr. Gates soil a pair of those $1200 britches :)

hahahaha I just read CNET's little update on the story and look what they wrote"

"In response to news that Apple Computer is about to announce a switch from IBM to Microsoft microprocessors, thousands of consumers have expressed online reaction ranging from stunned to skeptical, and from psyched to sad."

I feel like crying, can you really picture a pentium4 sticker on a PowerMac G5? PowerPC is what sets Apple apart from the PC,if they take that way then I am one angry customer.
Again ... reiterating multiple posts, by multiple posters, including myself ... OSX and Apple's creative hardware DESIGNS differentiate Apple from the others, not the PPC chip!!

Um ... yeah. Fab plant can produce whatever the company wants them to produce and Intel has lots of fabrication plants.

I wonder if Apple has enough rights to carry a complete PowerPC chip design to Intel, ready to fabricate. I've seen speculation that Apple has certain rights written into their contract with IBM if IBM fails to produce.

Does Jobs actually read this ****? I mean maybe he does just to get some laughs. If I was Jobs I would certainly read boards like this. These are the people that keep Apple hardware alive. The hardcore minority that breaks free from the evils of Microsoft and totalitarian societies...

okay I've gone off enough.
Does Steve read these boards ... who knows. Is he aware of what is on these boards ... you can bet YOUR arse on it. Steve is like the Madonna of the PC world. Push the buttons and rock your world. He likes to be talked about. It keeps people buying his products ... OSX ... iPods ... Mac Minis ... and even the very outdated Powerbooks, because in spite of their lack of recent, quality updates ... they are still the BEST. And it is not because of a PPC chip inside either. JMO

Whatever Steve decides to do, I bet its a smart move. We can discuss 'till we're blue in our faces, Apples got professionals on this. And they got deals, agreements, even gents agreements, with a lot of major actors in the marked.

Whatever they do, they'll be fine.

They got Steve ;)

Yeah... Microsoft are so NOT interested in PPC that they're using it in the Xbox 360... ;)
Good Point!!! I forgot about that. Good thing someone didn't! :)

#1 is possible, the DOJ would get involved again if #2 happened.

btw: Does anyone know if it's possible to watch the keynote if you aren't going to WWCD. I think last year you could see the WWDC keynote live at the Apple Store - I can't find any reference to that happening this year.
If I am not mistaken ... isn't Apple developing their own Office Suite right now? If so, WHO CARES about MS Office in the grand scheme of things. I believe MS stopped updating Explorer for the Mac, but we Mac users are still on the internet. :D

No I'm sorry. I just really can't agree with this at all. I just don't see Apple doing this. That would be like putting their prized and sweated golden software that they put their blood and sweat into and throwing it on a pile of turd. Do you think Apple wants to do this? I don't. That would be like mixing sh.it and Apple pie. It just won't go well together and the shi.t really will not compliment the Apple pie well you know.

This is nonsense. PowerPC is absolutely NOT what sets Apple apart. The combination of soft- and hardware sets Apple apart. And, even if Apple decides to go with Intel, I am sure that they will ensure that hard- and software will feel teh same. That experience is not given by the CPU.
Nothing will change from an user perspective.

But everyone forgot that in January, the Sony guy, already hinted to something similar. Apple was good in one thing, and that was software. And cooperation could be seen in the future. In my opinion, Sony was not going to run PPC to run Apple's software. So, that means other projects (still a possibility) or Apple working on a solution to run OS/X on the new Vaio line. Which is a much easier task, due to the fact that Darwin already runs on x86. Then there's is the partnership with HP. My expectation is that that's not just limited to iPods. Reason for my assumption is that HP is losing shelf space and market share to Dell and low price competitors. So, HP needs to do something different to make a come-back. Bringing out a new line for OS/X could be the trick. And for Apple, suddenly a huge opportunity to create growth. Will this mean Apple's harware will move from PPC. Probably not for a while. Code will run on both platforms, due to some hardware based runtime engine embedded in the CPU's. And that's also Apple's key to keep control over the hardware. Because Dell and the low price companies will not have access to this modified chip.

But back on topic on response to yur nonsense, when I had a Gateway years ago, that Intel Inside sticker came off easily. You may wanna try. It doesn't hurt the case... :)

Thank God!

I'm tired of waiting for a G5 Powerbook, so I'll take a 2.0Ghz Pentium! Perhaps Intel's desktop chips don't seem quite as impressive as AMDs offerings or even the G5, but stick with it. Intel spends so much money on R&D that it would be silly to think they're just going to sit back and relax. Stay tuned!

Scheissen!

Gonna' jump right to the end game.

Instead of all the $ and pain... Apple intros a consumer iMac 1GHz G5, W 17" LCD,1 GIG RAM, 300 GIG HDD, OS X H.264 chip, superdrive & digital lifestyle apps...

$699

and an iPod shuffle thown in with 5 free iTMS songs

Do not pass go! do not collect $200

I believe that Steve Jobs likely had his legal team work out an iron-clad agreement with IBM / Moto that gave him the right to move production elsewhere if IBM / Moto could not meet the demands of Apple. Steve know business ... I'll say it again and again and again if necessary.

Right. We just don't want the software to go on non-Apple hardware. As long as they keep the software and hardware joined like a good marriage should be then I'm fine. This marriage has gone too far for Apple software and Apple hardware to break up so soon nevermind the software having an affair with some piece of shi.t wintel box.
