I was gonna check mine for dead pixels, but regular dust particles are more apparently than dead pixels, so what's the point.

Obviously everything about you! (just joking) The moral high horse white knight members here with such high expectation and demand only live in contaminate free level 5 sterile environment with redundant (CPU manufacturing grade) air filtration system while wearing an air tight medical suit. Don't forget the ultimate working environment which have photometry approved by PH'D holders from top tiered ivy leagued schools in the US. GLARE IS NOT AN OPTION!

I mean come on what do you expect, if they going to scrutinize the laptop with such CEO/AERO SPACE ENGINEER level of quality and expectations than it is not out of scope they look at themselves, other tangible items and their environment in the same regard. Anything else would be hyprocritical.

After reading the OP's post I changed my wallpaper to white and got closer to the screen, after 5 seconds I stopped myself because really it is stupid and hurting my eyes. Then I realize my flaw was not using some type of magnifying glass at which point I just rolled my eyes virtually at the OP.

Who looks that closely at the screen. How can one even notice 1 pixel with the new retina screens. I understand previous LCD where dead pixels are noticeable but even then it was 2 or 3 dead pixels within a square inch would valid a "defect". This thread along with other people blasting the new magsafe adapter as "huge fail" is just a new level of whining.

OP maybe you should just return it and get a regular MBP. Because you are on your second MBPr and you seem hard to please, return it and wait a year and try again (hopefully by that time you will be whining about something else). Sorry for the people here saying 4 pixels out of 5 million is unacceptable is a little myopic and all the high horse self righteous is just a little too much. I understand Apple takes great pride to attention to detail but geez you guys are ridiculous, pacman7331 look into yourself like seriously do you talk like this in real life or just whine comfortably behind anonymity?

I do not look at my screen with a magnifying glass.

I'm sorry I do not look at my screen at the distance Apple states the pixels become indistinguishable. Retina is a marketing term remember.

I am hard to please? My iPad 3 has discoloration issues, an whole row of about 5 stuck pixels. Didn't bother replacing it. Different use for me, it's a non issue.

you've lost 4 pixels out of 5.184.000

man .. are you serious? you can't see them from a normal viewing distance.. (retina, remember?)

What Apple calls normal viewing distance is not what I abide. Retina is not a scientific term.

Stop looking at your display with a magnifying glass?

Read previous replies.

If you use a magnify glass on anything you can find a flaw.. actually anything you can find a flaw, ohh my wall in my living room is not exactly plane, there is a dip in my roof of 0.5", my sliding door during rain season makes a click on the last motion of being opened, the stitching of my hugo boss shirt is off centered on the inside.. so on and so forth. The issue here is "What is acceptable?" and for some a (huge?) grey area. Apparently 4/5,184,000 or 99.9998% is unacceptable. What's next? Digital calipers measuring the gaps on the MBPr? Let's step it up a notch and go laser much more accurate.

If anything we should appreciate Apple for being industry first on a lot of things like... QUALITY. They have pushed other manufacturers the expectations and acceptable level of quality from certain segment of consumers. I wonder before Macs do the same people here with high expectation do the same (subjective) analysis on other electronics?

If you currently have a rMBP I would like to exchange it with yours. It will be win win, you don't have an issue with quality control and I will receive a pretty good unit. Deal?

HAHA I read that reply, trading it for someone who doesn't see anything wrong with it as winning talking point doesn't mean anything for me. Sure I will trade you less 15% restocking fee of course. I am not a charity and hey that is policy by Apple. WIN WIN right? I'll gladly PM you my PayPal and you do the same account after you send me your laptop.

You are so cool! Must of been difficult for you to use a computer prior to retina. The horror. Are you disappointed every time you open your eyes?

In this economy, I would assume everyone works hard for their money. Dropping 2k-3k on a computer, OP has every right to get another replacement.

I agree to a certain degree but it is not absolute but then I saw your signature with a JAILBROKEN iPad. HELLO SOMEONE CALL THE MORALITY police. My point is people here like to complain about something but pushes the envelope on what is acceptable but in turn they don't for themselves which is ironic, rich and hypocritical.

Because I'm jailbroken means I pirate apps? For my own reasons, I actually DON'T pirate apps and jailbreak for themes and utilities which I remind you is legal. Please don't bash when you don't have all the facts

I wasn't, I was being cynical and derisive. I couldn't care less if you do or not and personally have no issue with it. What do I care if you do what you WANT to do with YOUR item. It is the whiners that are obviously over zealous that think they are some high moral individual. It is the hypocritical view on things.

Reminds me of my first job when I was young doing retail. I had this retail manager that would cull all resumes from teenagers. Back story if you are 30+ and doing retail, there is something missing or wrong. It is not exactly the best pay or career to be in. Anyway she would nit pick the resume with obvious subjectivity. Basically throw out resume in the garbage for what ever reason. Even at that age I was like seriously? Helloo! Teenagers looking for their first job. Cut some slack. You set such subjective high expectation and you can't even do a time sheets correctly or pay us correctly. Add to the fact said person was quite incompetent as a manager but I digress.

Like pacman7331 posted
" It's not unreasonable to expect a product that is fully functional, especially after paying 3k+. It's called having integrity, it's called modesty, it's the basis for character. Sad most people nowadays have no idea what that previous sentence means."
How did this guy go from buying a product to tooting his own horn on how nobel he is as a person?

When someone decides to turn his RMBP in due to faulty screen ... does he have to wait another 4-5 weeks to get the replacement? Are the replacements handled the same way as regular new orders or they have somehow higher priority?

Shhhhhhh

I find it amazing how many people are content with defective products.

Hey man - Be quiet. If it were not for all these people willing to accept flaws then it would not be easy for us to get what we want. Let them rock on so we can keep exchanging to get the good ones.

I'd return and demand another replacement. I had a replacement iPad 2 which had dead pixels and apple swapped it for another one.

My experiences with replacements is that it takes just as long to receive the replacement as it does a new machine. However, in the past, Apple instructed me to keep my old machine until the new one arrived. That's quite a nice policy, if you ask me. Some people would expect it so you don't have to go laptop-less, but it certainly saves a lot of headache.

I received my RMBP yesterday. Already noticed a small cluster of dead pixels which I was none too happy about. I decided I didn't want to look at those pixels every day for the next 3-4 years so I called Apple for a replacement. Their customer service was great and they said they would replace it, and would send me a return shipping label. They also said that even though it will say "3-4 weeks" on my orders page, that's incorrect and it will actually be sent out within "24-48 hours, maybe a bit longer". So according to the rep I spoke with, they treat replacements as a higher priority. Hopefully I get the replacement as quick as they say, and with a perfect screen.

Thanks for the reply! Good to know how it all works even though I hope not having to replace mine when it finally gets delivered to me ... still another couple of weeks to wait unfortunately.

Thats really great news, thx for sharing.

Hopefully you've paid with Visa or MasterCard, because if Apple tries to feed you some line about "an acceptable fail rate" or whatever; you can at least file a chargeback.

I had a small issue with dead pixels on a freshly unboxed iMac, apple basically told me to pound salt, and visa helped to change their mind.

What does this mean to chargeback? Do you mean once you buy the laptop from Apple and then return it you get the full refund back? I always referred to it as a return..unless I am missing something here...

What this means is, if Apple has told you " to bad we are not helping you" your credit card company will give Apple an ultimatum, "Make the customer happy" or "The customer will be mailing the device back to us ( Visa ) and we will be sending it back to you ( Apple ) and taking the money back."

Really? I didnt know the credit card company gets involved if you are not happy with your product..never heard of it...so you just call your credit card company and let them know Apple wont help you out in returning the product...

Correct; you have buyer protection built into your card agreement, that means if a hostil retailer is putting the screws to you; your card company will step in to make sure you're being treated fair.

Well. while we're playing the "the rep told me" game.

I called Apple 10min after unboxing mine Monday due to an instantly apparent pressure point/hole behind the LCD (put black text over the spot and it goes away).

Mine is due back in to their Early Field Failure Analysis unit this morning (took a day to get the return label+holiday=thursday).

His story was "a week or two"...we'll see. There seems to be different avenues for replacement, currently my store account doesnt show either the return or a new unit on order.

Being a BTO with 16Gb store exchange wasnt a real option (though at this point I kind of wish I had asked for them arrange swap for an 8GB). I raised the issue of being queued as a new order meaning another month, he did say pretty much what you heard, "yeah it says 3 weeks thats not correct" supposedly its being expedited...again we'll see.

I wasnt given the option to keep the unit until the replacement came. The only communication I have from the EFFA group was a fedex email that said there would NOT be a replacement until the unit was returned.

You went through the capture program. Same thing with me the first time. Depending on your support specialist she or he may be able to push you to the front of the line like mine did. I sent my original one in and got the new one in the span of seven days. I was BTO I might add.

Good luck!

EFFA? Interesting... the person I talked to was a Sales Associate. I got my return shipping label emailed to me today from UPS, and also my Apple Orders page updated with some new information. It shows the new MBPR replacement unit will ship in "5-7 business days", and also says I need to return the original MBPR by July 19th. I'm hoping to receive the replacement within the next few days like the sales rep first mentioned. Until then I'll hold onto the original a bit longer...

Wow, how did you even spot them? 99.0002% of the pixels are fine. What Is your visual acuity to spot them????

I know your question is directed at Gabe, but for me, I like to work in the dark (ie turn off the light in my room) and with a bright screen like the retina, it is really not that hard to notice the flaws when I am concentrate and focus only at the screen.

Usually if you work in the dark, you'd lower your screen brightness appropriately:p
