thinking of buying a MB

Hi there! I'm seriously thinking in switching to Mac, and to suit my needs, I think that a Macbook Core 2 Duo 2.2 with 2 GB of RAM is enough.
However, I have three questions:
1. Should I buy it now or should I wait until MW? In my local Apple store I can get some financial advantages if I buy before Jan. 14th.
You almost answered this one, since none of you has any regrets for not waiting for MW.
2. In other threads I've read about MB keyboard cracks. I also read that there was MB update in November, so maybe the problem was solved there (or maybe not) Has any of you (especially if your MB is from the November update) any problem?
3. I'm gonna use my laptop most of the time on my desk (though I need a laptop because I also travel quite a lot). Is it a good idea to buy wireless keyboard and mouse (from apple of course)?

1. it's totally up to you on this one. Macworld will probably see the new portable mac of some description, but if the macbook is what you're after and you could do with the 'financial help' then go for it. it was recently updated so i doubt a new update will happen at macworld. just think about if you'd rather wait for the portable mac. Also, its up to you but i wouldn't buy a macbook from apple with 2GB of ram. they charge of fortune to buy it upgraded, and can be found much cheaper on the net. apple have made it really easy to upgrade ram on a macbook anyway.

2. i actually posted a thread on this myself. i'm not sure if apple have solved the case cracking issue or not. you don't see many new macbooks with this problem, but that may just be because they havn't taken as much abuse as the older ones. but i'd definetly go with applecare, as that would cover it if it did occur.

3. i can't really answer that question, but IMO the keyboard is pretty good. if you're going to be typing for long hours then i suppose a keyboard can be justified. i'm also gonna be buying a mouse for mine soon. the trackpad is fine for general computing but when working with images on photoshop or gaming you can't beat the precision of a mouse.

hope that helped.

I too umm'd and arrr'd for along time before buying a black MacBook just before Christmas. Yes, I could've waited for MacWorld but now that I have it, I wouldn't change it for the world. It's an absolute beast and a joy to use, it is light enough to carry and powerful enough to handle CS3 (which is what I do).

I've managed to convince myself I don't actually want the sub-notebook that is due at MacWorld. I think it will be slightly too expensive for me, and I have reservations over the spec (I'm not sure if it would accommodate 4gb of memory which I have in this machine) and the fact that it is a first release so potentially could have problems/issues.

But maybe in 2 years I will upgrade and I'm sure the latest MacBook will be smaller and more portable than we ever thought possible, and I will buy it with glee, but for now the MacBook I am typing this on is really all that I need.

I am waiting. But frankly speaking the current 2.2GHz MB is already an excellent product for me and I am glad to know you are all very happy with it. But hey, we are less than a week away, so lets' wait and see.

This thing of "waiting a little bit longer for the next update" is like a disease. I must admit that I suffer from it to a certain extent...

Regrets....... I had a few....... But then again...... too few to mention.

I bought my 2.2 Black Macbook the end of Nov., and could not be happier. I do not regret the purchase one bit. It has completely lived up to the expectations I had for it.

I love my macbook. However, if Apple were to introduce a version with tablet like qualities, I'd sell mine in a heartbeat. A tablet would nice for taking notes in the MATH and PHYS courses at uni, instead of using paper.

Those of you who are students...

You do know, that if you buy your MacBooks and MacBookPro's at an AppleStore (not authorised reseller) and you bring your valid Student ID for University, with you.. you can get like 14-15% off the listed price!!

umm...i think you're exaggerating. i just called the local apple store...they said with a student discount i'd get 3% off new macbooks.

I just today got $100 off a $1299 MacBook with my EDU ID, so that's a little under 8% discount.

bought mine back in oct. no buyers remorse. I've had 3 months to enjoy my macbookpro. All is well.

Saw all the speculation about the ultra-portable, ultra-thin, multi-touch trackpad notebook that is supposedly going to be introduced at Macworld next week. Then I decided to order Macbook:D

Though if it turns out to be real tablet PC like laptop I might be bummed for a day or two.

I wont lie, I do have a slight bit of remorse, mainly because I settled for the 2.2 MBP instead of the 2.4 one, all cause I got tired of saving. Now with the update thats about to happen, I could probably get the 2.4 MBP at the same price as the 2.2 but with the bigger HD space and VRAM:mad:.

I have to admit I was close to returning my MacBook but after reading this thread I've decided to cancel my RMA. Even if the UP is released and I somehow like it, which is unlikely given the likelihood of a ULV processor maybe 2gb ram max and 64gb ssd (I'd need more power for vmware)

I can still wait for its rev 2 so its bugs can be ironed out given it'd be a rev A product. I also have the feeling Apple would charge heavily for that portability. Even more so with the talk of the lack of an internal optical. A premium this starving student may not be ready to fork out right now and if I can get more power for less with slightly more weight right now them sign me up

I'm also not in the mood to pay a £60 restocking fee. Thats the price of a 4gb ram kit

I brought my MacBook in late November (Santa Rosa Edition, right?), and I've had zero remorse! I knew about the sub-notebook concept that people were rumouring, but I thought:

1. It's a rumour, it might not happen.
2. Because it's a sub-notebook, it may have a slower processor (also, I heard that it won't come with an optical drive built in, despite its portability).
3. I like the white casing of the MacBook- it matches my iPod! :D
4. Even if the new MacBook comes more RAM, HD, etc, I can always upgrade my MacBook to meet the current configurations.

I've had my MacBook for 2 months now and have absolutely no regrets. There is only one thing that could come out next week that would give me buyer's remorse and I'm 99% sure it won't happen. That is, the MacBook is given a 15" option. That's a good size, in my opinion, but not good enough that it warrants the extra $400. I am not a "power" user so my MacBook will suit me just fine for several years. Also, just my opinion, MacBooks are perfectly portable and anything smaller or lighter, and less powerful as speculated, is just silliness.

To Signatus, I have a Logitech wireless mouse and it's great. It's half the price of an Apple mouse. Personally, I love the MB keyboard so I don't think another keyboard is necessary, unless the set-up of your desk makes it sensible to get one.

I'm glad I bought when I did. Though I bought a refurbished MacBook, which didn't include the new GMA X3100. But that's not a huge deal since I don't play many games. Haven't had a single problem with my MacBook yet, except for this which I fixed myself quite easily.

I got a refurb MacBook Pro on New Years Eve and I don't regret it at all.:)

What about the rumors that apple are going for an all aluminum casing as they did with the iMac for the macbooks? i see the macbooks as the only product in the apple line to still be white....is this a hint?

I'm personally waiting until next week to get my new macbook, just in case they change anything on the macbooks, but i would never get an ultra portable, i just like to have a proper keyboard with a large hard drive and "laptopness".

I currently have a 12" iBook G4, which i have had for 2 years, and still love it to pieces, but the practicality of the battery, speed and hard drive space is just not good anymore. However i love the size of it being a 12" screen.

so time for an update? macbook worth it?
i would get the middle entry macbook.

I got my 2.2 Macbook around thanksgiving and I LOVE it. I thought about waiting but an ultra portable wont fit my lifestyle. I want to make sure I had an optical drive and something sturdy (I take it around with me a lot, and i fear I will break anything that is smaller than my macbook!) But then again, we will have to wait to see what apple has in store. Regardless, I love my macbook!

Just Look At The Calendar - - -

At this point, it's foolish not to wait for Macworld announcements.

by May, I'd say wait till summer announcements.

If you purchased in October or November, I'd say that the minimal bumps that are expected don't warrant any buyers regrets. Certainly not in the case of the rumored flash/sub NB. It'll be slower. Capacity will be smaller. And you'll only start wondering whether or not you should hold off until July, when Steve will inevitably announce a bump to THAT one as well!

Live in the moment.

Bought Macbook few days before Christmas (even though I didn't have to) and no regrets at all. I have been reading and watching rumors about new notebook line at MW but I realized that Apple is not so good with his first product revisions anyway. So I went for the macbook and I am more than happy with my purchase :)

I'm getting my new mid-range macbook in a few hours. I can't wait! Getting it for only $1149. I'll be switching from an HP laptop (with XP Pro SP3).

The only thing I regret is that the graphics card is rubbish. I can't play Portals. Other than that it's a fantastic machine.

Yeah the integrated Intel graphic stink for games. I sold my MB and bought a SR MBP just because of that issue.

I will probably sell the MBP and get a new one once they upgrade the video card again. They only hesitation I have is Leopard. I prefer staying with Tiger and I understand you can't install Tiger on the new systems. Not liking that all or nothing solution.

Cheers,

I understand many users are happy with Leopard but I have Adobe Creative Suite 2 (CS2) and Adobe indicates there are issues I "may" encounter that will have no resolution. Upgrading to CS3 is expensive and according to their support matrix, they do not have their update for Leopard yet but for the most part it should work.

I also have several little utilities that haven't been updated yet but most importantly for me -- My system is stable and I'd like to keep it that way. I like newer, faster hardware but don't like changing the OS that often.

Cheers,
