Of newish shows, I really enjoyed the first season of Leverage on TNT. Second season is due to start this summer.

After a vexingly slow start, Dollhouse is finally showing me something interesting. Too bad I'm almost certainly not going to get to see where it's going.

Oh! I forgot about Damages. Very suspenseful law drama with lots of twists. The second season just finished. For all the Dexter posters, I couldn't agree more. You almost feel guilty rooting for a serial killer, but he's so engaging and the inner monologue is brilliant.

Best :
House
24
Family Guy (if you're 30-40, you'll get the jokes. if you're a teenager, only some)
Life

Worst :
How I met your mother (superficial characters, bad actors)
Lost (they lost me, i tried to like it)

I tried to like, but getting lame : Heroes

Promising : Kings

Some of my favourite shows that I'll recommend:

24

Spooks

The Wire

South Park

Lost

Heroes (Series one is excellent, the rest are okay)

Top Gear

Peep Show

Only Fools and Horses (Although it's 80s/90s)

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (One one series/six episodes made. First episode here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3311296398556365633)

Robot Chicken

The Office

Extras

Buffy/Angel

Penn & Tellers Bull*****

Okay I ended up not really getting into the King of Queens.

I have just finished the entire 6 seasons of 3rd Rock from the Sun. What a fantastic show!

I have watched a couple of episodes of Lie to Me and I can see the appeal. I'll try to watch more of that.

I've started watching The Universe from the History Channel. Quite an interesting, but exaggerated Space series.

I have to say my favourite show of all time has to be Frasier I don't think I'll be able to find anything that matches it.

I love The Universe.

My favorite shows currently:

1. Dexter (Showtime)
2. Lost (ABC)- still love this show.
3. Heroes (NBC)- still sticking with this.
4. V (ABC)- liking it so far.
5. Tutors- enough to keep me watching.

Part favorites: Deadwood (HBO), Rome (HBO), Sopranos (HBO).

If you've not watched Dexter, start at the beginning. You can rent it. The first season was intriguing with smart writing. The second season was incredible. I have the highest regards for Rome, Deadwood, and Sopranos, but be warned every other word in Deadwood starts with "f". :)

^ Rome was really good.

If we're going to recommend stuff for people to rent or go back to see then I would have to recommend Band of Brothers. It was a truly amazing series that makes you appreciate what those guys went through. I remember watching it before the days of DVR's and absolutely dropping everything on Sunday nights so I woulnd't miss an episode.

Weeds - Great comedy show with lots of drama involved.

Sons of Anarchy - Not sure if you'll like this as you like comedy type shows more but this show is jawdropping as far as drama and action shows go.

Rescue Me - Very powerful show about addiction and is surprisingly funny.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Hilarious show that can be described in one word, "Shenanigans".

Smallville - It has great moments and not so great moments but overall is a very solid show about Superman's origin and upbrining. It's nothing like the comics though so if you are familiar with Superman comics don't expect it to follow them.

Does it have to be fiction?

If not, I'd recommend Planet Earth and Blue Planet. Masterpieces!

In fact, any Attenborough show really.

I really like Chuck, and the latest season has been great. The show has an excellent mix of action, suspense, comedy, and romance.

Modern Family. The funniest show on TV, and probably the most underrated one as well. My parents got me hooked on this. Wed. night on ABC, check it out.

Can't believe I made this thread almost three years ago!

I posted this in this thread, regarding my favourite TV shows:

My current (on-air) favourite shows are as follows:

  • Breaking Bad (not usually my kind of thing, but I LOVE it)
  • The Walking Dead (last season was rubbish (on the farm) but this season is much better)
  • Dexter (watched the latest season through habit - it's OK)
  • Modern Family
  • Family Guy
  • American Dad
  • Futurama
  • The Middle
  • The Big Bang Theory (I don't think it lives up to the hype -not on par with Frasier or Friends, however funny in its own, limited way)

Previous favourites include:

  • Frasier (probably my favourite show of all-time)
  • Friends
  • Will & Grace
  • LOST (what a rubbish ending)
  • Star Trek TNG, DS9 & VOY (huge fan of all shows)
  • Battlestar Galactica
  • House
  • 3rd Rock from the Sun

I have recently been trying to get into more programs, but unfortunately, none of them have grabbed my attention:

  • Game of Thrones (watched the pilot a few years ago - didn't like it, rewatched the pilot and second episode the other day and still don't like it!)
  • Mad Men (I watched the pilot. I can tell this is a well-made, high quality program, however don't think it's my kind of story)
  • Warehouse 13 (stopped watching halfway through the pilot episode)
  • Community (watched the pilot episode)
  • Burn Notice
  • How I Met Your Mother

Can anyone offer me some solid recommendations based on what I've liked before?

Have any new shows came up in the last three years worth checking out?

Homeland is the worst acted, written, directed show that I was ever addicted to. Just watched season one and can't wait for season two DVDs.

It's not new, but Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is still the best TV series I've ever seen. Watch The Terminator, Terminator 2 and then TSCC season 1 and 2 (and forget about T3 and T4, they're awful and don't exist in the TSCC timeline), it'll blow your mind how good a saga it makes. I actually ended up liking TSCC more than the movies, that's how good it is.

In fact, any Attenborough show really.

I second that. Anything by David Attenborough is spectacularly filmed with an attention to detail, rich in knowledge and lore and a respect for natural life that is wonderful to behold.

It is always fascinating to see a resurrected thread. I don't watch much TV (current affairs and documentaries mostly), but am choosy about what I watch.

Recent preferences include:

Life On Mars (the British version), and its sequel, Ashes to Ashes, both intelligent, original, well acted and very well scripted bizarre homages to respectively, the 1970s, and the 1980s.

Downton Abbey. Yes, it is a soap opera, but a classy one. It is entertainment not history, but still great fun.

The English inbetweeners and shameless. The US inbetweeners is appalling, and the US shameless is good, but more serious than the UK one.

I also like sons of anarchy, hell on wheels and boardwalk empire. Any human heart was an excellent 4 x 2 hr show n UK tele, as was the promise and topboy.

I'm waiting for a DVD of naeturvkin to arrive, is a black comedy about a night shift at a petrol station in Iceland, meant to be hilarious, but overlooked.

Know I'm late to the party but burned through The Wire seasons 1 & 2 in three days, good stuff.

*For the Brits, on an indirectly related note, HMV have the whole series box set of £50, and a buy two, get the cheaper for half price deal on box sets.

I recently got hooked on Castle and just finished catching up to the current season. I have to say, it's quick addicting and the main characters have some pretty good chemistry.

Not quite sure what show to start on next, I'm thinking about giving Burn Notice a good although that's a lot of seasons to get through.
