Alternatively, they could release the new Product RED XServe.

I can see swarms of people lining up to buy that beast when it's released 😉

Or maybe just Aperture in new, fancy RED packaging.

What is it with this (product)-thingy? When I got the first ad about it in my email, I first thought that they had a standard template for new products, and someone forgot to add the name of the product, leaving only the placeholder-name ("product") in place.

Yes, I thought same thing. Then this weekend at Gap I saw them advertising (Gap)RED. Huh? Did Apple screw up something so simple?

Black iMac with red apple logo and metalic red stand.

I think keyboard keys need to be black too! but maybe a red mouse!

Yes to the first part. But I hate all these "symbolic" products, money raising or otherwise, as-if someone with a red iPod or a pink bottle of water cares more than those with black iPods and clear bottles of water. It's absurd.

If Apple or an individual feels strongly about an issue they should just donate with out prodding by cheesy gimmick products. All Apple really had to do is say it's going to donate 5% of all nano sales this Q to Bono's charity. I really detest this new color capitalism that most likely won't help anyone other than the company participating and the foundation bureaucracy where the money is sent. And my Gd, Bono is already getting BILLIONS from Gates and Buffet. Is the paltry millions it will get from red iPod even going to make a difference? Red nanos do nothing but stroke the egos of its owners.

I totally disagree with you. I think your thinking is completely outmoded. I think the RED campaign is brilliant. It's trying to harness a little bit of the vast spending power of the engine of capitalism to use it for good. If it works, then who cares how that money was raised.

Let me give you another example: the "micro lending" institutions that give small loans to poor 3rd world residents so that they can start a business or otherwise gain some form of financial independence. These microlending institutions are making HUGE returns. Are they evil for making money from helping poor people? That's faulty reasoning in my opinion. Microlending has been massively effective in helping completely change may poor people's lives, and in fact this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner won because of his microlending innovation.

FYI, this is a whole burgeoning field called "social entrepreneurship". The idea is to look for capitalist solutions to social problems. The basic principle is that most people are much more likely to buy a product rather than just write a check.

anyone know if these will be available outside north america any time soon? I want to get a new nano for the gapless playback and a red one would be my first choice. was thinking about getting one off ebay but i'd rather get it from apple direct

I think you totally misinterpreted his (and my) statements. There's nothing wrong with making money and helping the poor, or making money BY helping the poor. Either way you're helping the poor and it's good. The problem with this Product(RED) thing is that it only applies to certain products in the line, so you're basically walking around with "My iPod helped people, did yours?" radiating from your little red MP3 player. If you buy anything but the red one you're forced to feel bad about it, esp. since they're all the same price. It's like those hybrid cars with the word HYBRID written in huge letters across the back. Anyway, even if you're not a smug person and you just want to help, you're forced to broadcast your donation every time you take your nano out to change songs.

geeze man, settle down, not everyone gives a ****. personally, I like red and I'd still pick the red one even if for every one sold they killed a kitten. just because it's part of some campaign doesnt mean those who buy it care about the campaign

Well I'm sure the world is better off having you in it, not giving a "****" about anything.

It's so terribly ironic that in order to get most Americans to donate money to such a cause, there has to be the incentive of recieving something, no less they have to buy a product and have a mere 5% of the product actually be donated. I am in no way condemning this idea, in fact, it's quite brilliant considering the highly consumerist and materialist culture "developed" countries have, so that while people in the West are becoming anti-social drones constantly listening to music and complaining because the earbuds hurt their ears, that malnourished "third-world" inhabitant can watch all the money this organization is funding go to the same corrupt leader who's causing his or her starvation. However, I find it brilliant because it will be successful, and I know Bono won't allow the corrupt Gov't to handle all the cash this is producing; I have a notion he'd like to see any beneficial effects of this directly and first hand.

totally agree...

hell, if they really want to help why not donate a % of ALL iPods sold during a specific period of time?

the RED thing they have going is cool, however i doubt many will buy red on the basis of the donation, the majority of people will buy it because they like the color.

this is exactly why this is a brilliant campaign. it fits with the rest of the product landscape, offers a product people want, and does a little good along the way.

if it cost $209, it would be silly, but since it costs the same, a worthy cause gets a portion of the cost of something most of these people would buy anyway, and it shouldn't be a statement of guilt, it should merely raise awareness of the issue.

i know my brother last week went to the apple store to get an 8 gig nano, but ended up walking away with the ()red because he appreciated the gesture

i would be afraid of the potential for certain products to be obnoxiously proselytizing (t-shirts especially, although I havn't seen the gap shirts and hence can't comment on them), but such a natural fit is great

I'd like to get a red nano but Im afraid that people will think Im a wanker like people have said - "oh look at him – Mr Holier Than Thou Save the World By Buying a Friggin' iPod!". ha ha. 🙂

Anyway you can't get them downunder - what's with that?

I think that would be a better idea. But... I hate to be cynical but maybe because it would cost Apple a lot more money that way? But then again I don't know what the profit margins are. How many RED nanos do they expect to sell? Or maybe the whole RED thing is free adertising for Apple. People see these (product RED) adverts and think "yeah I want an iPod" but won't necessarily by a RED nano. Either way it will probably result in a sale of an Apple product.

Anyway I guess I shouldn't rubbish the cause. I think really it is not about the money per se. Its all about raising awareness (as minstryoffunk said) and trying to get people involved – which is along the same line as the Live 8 concerts were – awareness, not money/charity.

If Apple can apply red to a macbook or macbook pro and make anywhere near as awesome as the Acer Ferrrari 5000 or 1000 series notebooks then I'm sold! XD

13.3" MBP (Product) RED

well just a wishful thinking..

but how about an anodized aluminum covered 13.3" MacBook Pro in red?.. With decent graphics card and a MacBook latch design with changable hard disk drive and backlid keyboard and etc...

that would be "must buy" for me..
