Amazing app, way better than Alien Blue, but you know what sucks? It's that you cannot activate the dark theme once your gold membership ends.

There is no iPad support because fragmentation exists under iOS. Too much work for developers to support so many devices with so many screen resolutions.

Thanks for the Gold, I'll still be using Narwhal, it's been the best I've used.

A few more storyboards with autolayout support to display more or less detail does not justify the lack of an iPad version.
I can tell you that IF you have the iPhone version with your data model ready it would not be a big deal.

Unless they did not want to invest the time, which honestly I understand.
Most people carry their phones around. It's all about eyeballs, not iPads.

I'm wondering why they even bothered to acquire Alien Blue if they weren't going to continue to support and improve it? Instead they scrap it and build a whole new app, which (granted I only used it for five minutes) doesn't seem even 30% as capable as AlienBlue AND on top of that has no iPad support.

What the hell are they thinking?
This was my exact reaction. Will continue using Alien Blue for now.

I'm glad that Alien Blue still works for the time being. Not digging this new app, and no iPad support is a bummer. Anybody know if it will send notifications for post replies, messages, etc?

Pretty sure my favorite part of this bit of news is the decision to pick a screenshot showing user "Balonypony".

What is everyone liking about this over Alien Blue?

From a quick run through I can only see things that I dislike.
  • There is no easy way to preview videos and images (long press in alien blue).
  • Even when going to the page, all of optimized content views are gone.
  • There is no more gallery view
  • The comment editor doesn't give you any way to preview formatting
  • Voting arrows are inline. They take up room and increase the chance of accidentally downvoting stuff as you're just scrolling.
it seems super basic at this point and I can't really see the advantage over just using the redesigned mobile site.

Anyone that uses Reddit but doesn't use the app Narwhal is crazy, IMO. The dev supports everything for iOS (Universal app, multi tasking on iPad, 3D touch, Safari View, PiP on iPad) and it looks great and runs great. All the essential features of a good Reddit app are there as well. It's seriously fantastic.

Agreed, this has been my favorite out of all of them. It's minimal, clean, intuitive, chock full of options, and they are continually improving. Reddit should've just bought them out instead of creating their own. Alien Blue always seemed a bit clunky. They also looked like crap before the redesign.

I disliked the search feature and the tabbed two column layout on the iPad. The UI for swiping to see content full screen, seeing comments, and then returning to the previous page were cumbersome. This app is simple and clean.

I'm not following?

In Alien Blue, you would tap on the content area to see the content or the comment number to jump straight to comments. The Reddit app functions the same (except the different button placement).

If you click to view the content in Alien Blue, you can either swipe into the comments like you mentioned or press the comments button. In the Reddit app you press the comments button. So again here, if you don't like the swipe the behavior is identical.

When in the comments in Alien Blue, you can get to the article by either scrolling all the way to the top of the comments thread and clicking the link (the same and only way you can do it in the reddit app) or you can again use the right edge swipe which will toggle between the comments and article from any point.

i guess the platform you use it on makes a big difference. For me, a lot of the stuff you like I dislike because I'm using the app on a 4 inch screen so having persistent bar along the bottom to facilitate switching into the comments is a huge irritant when I used to be able to do it with a simple swipe. But even at that, the swipes were always in addition to the buttons?
[doublepost=1460047654][/doublepost]Another annoyance in using it a bit more, it doesn't remember view settings. So I need to switch to compact view every single time I change subs.

Meh, I'll just stick with Safari.
I will too since I don't like any of the mobile apps. They look ok, just think the desktop site is better. I did download this and login to get the 3 months gold but then deleted the app.

I currently use Antenna (formerly known as amrc) and before that I was a big fan of Baconreader. I never really liked Alien Blue but this new "official" app looks appealing. What is so cool about Antenna is that it uses a gesture based swipe interface for quick browsing and accessibility. We'll see how this one holds up. I'll happily take the gold lol.
