I guess we'll see where this all lands. Netflix for example claims record sign ups, lol. Will Reddit capture this fresh lightning of fortune or go down in flames. Will people create a new Reddit? Call it Creddit.

Lets note here these are UNPAID moderators, who are modding these subs on their own time for nothing in return...

Who the hell you going to replace them with?

Steve is making a running for worst tech CEO with Elon
I'm sorry, but do you really expect reddit to pay moderators? These are people that, at best, are deleting "mean" comments and spam posts, and banning trolls from subreddits. It almost seems like this is something a certain kind of power-hungry person would do as a hobby than an occupation.

And don't forget how "our" rebellion against Netflix putting the pinch on account sharing would bring them down... and then Netflix just reports substantial growth in subscriptions. What I find more interesting is how "we" were all canceling our subscription but then each new Netflix thread is filled with many of the same people again proclaiming how they are cancelling their Netflix account. Is it cancel, re-subscribe, cancel, resubscribe, cancel? Or do many of us write one thing but do something else? ;)
Is it that difficult for you to understand that the "we" in these communities may have actually unsubscribed? The number of people who are willing to stay or actually subscribe is just higher than the minority in these small communities.

Deleted content can be easily restored. Pretty sure mass delete attempts won’t get very far before they are blocked off as Reddit knows in advance some might attempt this.

Then a mass boycott needs to happen, or, a major revolt. Start ****posting in those subreddits en masse and let them fill with crap and see how they like it. I like option two better. Bottom line, they need to rub Steve Huffman's nose in it. He done screwed up.

The nuanced bit that Netflix didn't talk about was that while they lost a lot of people paying full price, they gained a lot of users who pay a substantially discounted rate. The number of paying subscribers may have increased, but the total they're bringing in could very well have dropped.

Its not a question of what is just but who has a legal right, Reddit will win.
Just because they CAN do something doesn't mean it is in their best interest. Certain personality types can't register that concept, though.

People and companies torpedo themselves all the time.

mods are such narcissistic babies as usual. holding an entire userbase hostage because their favorite 3rd party app can’t afford the new rules

loving the drama though, this is better than reality tv 🍿🍿🍿

Wrong. The CEO of Reddit is the one acting like a spoiled baby. He needs to feel the burn so that his position of leadership is at risk. Then he might get a fresh perspective and realize that you need to work -with- your community, not against it in the name of pure profits.

He is not suggesting that they pay moderators. He is stating that these people are doing it for free (which is a fact), and Reddit being willing to get rid of all of them says a lot about Reddit as a company. Also the whole "power-hungry" thing applies more towards a small number of people who actually abuse their power. In many small communities and even large ones there are people who are just active in the community and just want to help with moderating posts/comments.

Where do I volunteer to be a moderator that will keep the threads open. I don’t care about this silly crusade.

Edit: I do think corporate structure definitely was silly here but people getting so passionate about what happens to websites and app makers is so cringe to me.

Would love to see what an Apple built crowd governed forum would look like. Build it on ActivityPub for compatibility with Mastodon and other open platforms and deeply integrate it into iOS and macOS.

Let users create short posts on their own feeds (Twitter) and organize into channels for wider long form discussions (Reddit).

I can imagine hooks into Apple News with featured threads and crowd sourced breaking news coverage at a local level — something Twitter used to be good at.

At this point, Reddit can only be salvaged if Steve Huffman steps down. Same for Twitter and E… never mind, not going down that rabbit hole. I’d like to see how Apple’s design solutions and hardware/software integrations could be applied to the segment.
There is zero chance any company such as Apple wants to be involved in hosting a Reddit type product. Far too many headaches to even think about with absolutely no benefit to themselves.

It seems to be getting more and more chaotic.

I can understand the protests, however, anyone that has an issue with it should make their feelings clear by leaving Reddit. That includes moderators.

It's not for those volunteer moderators to unilaterally decide on behalf of everyone else whether they should be allowed to view/contribute to a subreddit, it's for the individual to decide.

What about all the moderators on Reddit today? There are about 70,000 of them I believe. If they are willing to offer their unpaid labour and free time you really believe they are the only ones?

All mods are unpaid on this forum. If they all decided to quit tomorrow for any reason there will be hundreds in Q to replace them on a forum this size.

And that does not mean they will be worse at the job than those before them.

Aside from anything else, the vast majority have had their moment and are back open again. The rest will follow. Those mods will be more worried about losing their roles than you might think.
The mods for most Reddits do it as a labor of love for the subject. Personally, my love for a subject ends where it becomes unpaid work. Probably why I have no desire to be a mod anywhere. And unfortunately for Reddit, many of those potential replacement mods desire to become a mod for entirely the wrong reason, to wield power over others. Putting *******s like that in charge will only drive away a subreddit's users. In the past many enthusiasts for various topics have migrated to a new subreddit because of poor moderation in the old one. Except in this case I don't foresee a lot of people wanting to step in and make and moderate a new subreddit for a topic due to the way Reddit views their moderators.

Also, you didn't say which subreddit you'd be volunteering to moderate.

I always thought being a mod was generally a thankless position, and that the people who volunteer to do it do so because they like the subreddit and community. Are there really going to be enough good mods to replace those dedicated ones? Or are there going to be a bunch signing up who then abandon it in a couple of weeks?

I've never considered being a mod to be a coveted position, but then again, I don't have a ton of time to devote to such things to begin with.

Reddit already has issues with moderator quality in the larger subs - a mass removal and replacement will work about as well as when China tried to have peasants make steel.
