Gosh. Such a tough decision. I have been looking really hard at the 512Gb model at Best Buy. With the movers coupon discount online (eBay) and the open box option, the price is really tempting!

But I really really want to see what this update has in store. Skylake improvements will be nice but it's already been determined the performance difference won't be too great. Probably not worth ~$400. But it is worth noting the next model will almost certainly include a price decrease from the current Apple prices. First gen products are always marked up. There's also a chance a more significant edu discount is offered (currently only $50. Such a joke)

The biggest thing I would like to see is TB3. To me, this totally future proofs this device since I can then buy TB3 accessories, docking station, etc that will last me the next 5 years. Skylake supports the TB3 option but as others have pointed out it requires another chip on the oh-so-small motherboard. Hopefully Apple can make it work.

Another thing I think could be improved is the keyboard. I'm not suggesting Apple will move to a new keyboard, more just refine the current butterfly design under the hood. A very under reported topic here is the quality and durability of the rMB individual keys. I bought 2 when they first came out and returned both due to the premium price combined with finicky keys on both models I ended up returning. It wasn't an issue with the keyboard overall, I enjoyed the new feel. But I had 1-2 keys on each model which were clearly defective and I found that unacceptable for an Apple product, especially one that's sold at such a premium given its specs. Given my personal experience and many others on this forum, I think Apple had a QA issue with the keyboard on this model. They would definitely be aware of this based on return volumes and refurbishments they had to make on these devices. I think there's a decent chance this next model has a slightly refined keyboard that is more durable and more fresh out of the box.

The perfect Apple product line:
iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro

MacBook and MacBook Pro come in 3 sizes each, Pro is more powerful and has more ports (actually it should have all modern ports required for adequate professional work without having to deal with adapters, not only USB 3). The largest size is 17" (maybe 16"). MacBook is a bit weaker and have a couple of USB 3 ports.

iPad mini, iPad, iPad Pro - all have same features, the only difference is screen size, maybe power. The only exception may be a lack of keyboard for Mini.

iPhone mini, iPhone, iPhone Pro - all have all current features, the only difference is screen size and power and Pro model has 2 cameras for advanced or 3D photoshooting and OIS. Everythig else should be the same.

Pro model exists only with 2 cameras, there shouldn't be a single camera Pro or Plus or whatever. Only 3 iPhone models. All previous are discontinued at the time of the announcement to avoid fragmentation and the need for developers to support for years the slower/lacking features iPhones which are still being sold.

Starting at 32 Gb, 2GB RAM.

In the perfect world all iPhones have 2 cameras, out-of-this-world retina 3D screen, but then there should be something else to differentiate the Pro model, it doesn't sell well without unique features.

I really wanted one, its quite annoying its not coming out this tax year. Bah.

40% improvement in graphics means no stuttering in Mission Control. This also helps in future proofing your laptop and get out of upgrade cycles for years.

I'm still using a 2007 Macbook and am very happy with it but some compatibility problems are creeping up on Snow Leopard. I could have bought the new Macbook a year ago, but I looked at Skylake's timeline and estimated it would be available in November - it was but Apple failed to update to Skylake.

I realize that I will be paying perhaps a couple hundred more dollars for this refresh, but if I get an additional three years use out of it, that more than pays for the cost difference from the closeouts this week. That is a lower total cost of ownership.

The GPU improvements are nothing to sneeze at, especially when you want to run the maximum scaled resolution. There are other hardware acceleration improvements as well. One huge example, the M-5Y71 in the current macbook is only capable of hardware decoding VP8 while youtube is using VP9 for many of it's video's. To play high resolution youtube video's back without lag you have to use a browser extension in Chrome/Firefox to force h264 playback, something safari seems to be doing automatically. Skylake should eliminate this problem and allow proper playback of VP9 youtube videos. I'm also hopeful for a 16GB ram option for virtual machines.

Edit: The following processors will be used ;)

Intel® Core™ m3-6Y30 Processor (4M Cache, up to 2.20 GHz)
Intel® Core™ m5-6Y54 Processor (4M Cache, up to 2.70 GHz)
Intel® Core™ m7-6Y75 Processor (4M Cache, up to 3.10 GHz)

Wikipedia claims these processors were released six months ago. So why did Apple wait so long for an update? What could they have been waiting for? Hmmm, ... maybe denser RAM for a 16MB option, a higher capacity SSD, a better LCD?

Cool good news.
I fear Apple is going back to the 90's era with to many product lines and devices. It should really be simplified.

Macbook Air
Macbook
Macbook Pro

Mac Mini
iMac
Mac Pro

iPad Mini
iPad (Drop the Air moniker or give it to the mini)
iPad Pro

iPhone Mini/Air/SE
iPhone
iPhone Pro/Plus

I too feel the line-up and the naming is too complex. I would go simpler than what you propose however.

The iPhone - call it the 'iPhone'. There is no need for pro plus or other names. Maybe this seems confusing at first, but it works for other things, like Macs.

The iPad - same as above. Why is there the need for air, mini, pro? Make an iPad, make it in three sizes. People can figure it out. We don't have iMac mini, or iMac plus, and we don't need such names.

For the Mac, I would go so simple as iMac (all in one, all 'i' products are all in one products, or include screen products), Mac (this is the mac mini), and Mac Pro.

For the laptops, it seems as if the air is on the way out. Go to Macbook and Macbook pro.

So, my list would be:
iPhone
iPad
Macbook
Macbook Pro
iMac
Mac
Mac Pro

Lack of any ports and high price makes MacBook really unattractive to me. I'd be more interested in updated MBP. Heck, even retina Macbook Air would be a better option than MacBook at this point.

I also don't want any portable that doesn't have MagSafe. I despise all other other power connectors because my dog likes to trip the cord.

If Apple could reduce the bezels on any MB, why would they increase the screen size? We're talking about the company obsessed with thinness and lightness... right?

I think offering the 13" and 15" in a smaller form factor would be highly favorable for Apple. Those screen sizes are clearly profitable, so why change?

Remember, the rMB is 12" because of the keyboard. It doesn't mean Apple is adopting even sized screens.

Does your iPhone have Magsafe? Why not? Perhaps because a single charge takes most users through a full day?

Same philosophy for the rMB. Just plug in at night where your dog won't trip on it along with your phone.

PS I need to update my signature line.

No you don't. No one cares what hardware you own. It doesn't serve any purpose for anyone to know that (unless we have your address and plan to break in). In addition, many people here have so much stuff that the signature would fit half of the page, so for bragging you need to do some more investing into hardware.

Exactly. Those that are passing up 300-500 dollars off just to have the newest model must have money to burn. Chances are you won't be able to notice any difference in performance.

It already is a viable product for many people. It may not be viable for you but it probably wasn't designed for you to begin with.

I only have two days to decide if the $300 discount is worth the refresh... ugh so difficult. I wish they came out with it already

Exactly! The 16 inch MBP just exists in the dreams of those who still haven't accepted the loss of the 17 inch.

This is what I sort of expected until they wheeled out an iPhone SE which is inconsistent with any naming they have used previously (except maybe the Performa models, don't make me go check the whole list). iPhone Mini would make much more sense. iPad Mini, iPad, iPad Pro. Macbook, Macbook Pro. Mac (drop the i), Mac Pro. iPhone Mini, iPhone, iPhone Plus maybe as pro would sound ridiculous. ("My phone is PRO, that means I can play Angry Birds on a larger screen.")

"A refresh will likely be minor"
Too bad,the retina Macbook needs more than that..
seems like Apple is insisting on keeping the 12 inch Macbook a neutered, limited, and underpowered product.a fashion accessory instead of a real functionial Mac.
such a shame.

The problem with your proposal is a MacBook costs a lot of money. A lot, especially compared with an MBA. Not having something like the MBA (reasonable connectivity, performance and price while still very light) would destroy apple's education market.

Regarding a skylake MacBook, it should have been released months ago. Of course it's a silent update because at this point it's embarrassing. Wall Street is right. Apple is an iPhone company.

They should kill the current MacBook Air and drop the price on the MacBook to make it the entry level.

Apple has no clue what to do with the PC market since Jobs passed away. (RIP) since then that have gone nothing but backwards.

Laptops are phones or tablets we don't want them razer thin we want them comfortable but powerful. We don't want 15 hours of battery live 6-8 is perfectly fine if the internals justify it. They just don't have a clue.

Apple went from launching iMacs with top of the line components to a iMac with a top of the line screen but powers it with 4 year old graphics tech.. Violation #1 then refreshed it with another junk gpu that is not capable to run the display yet charge it a premium like it had a top of the line chip that's violation #2

Then, instead of properly refreshing the MacBook Pro retina which they are insisting on integrated graphics which can't run squat at that resolution, we get the 12" MacBook that cost more than most laptops at the size and actually runs slower then their iPads.... That is pretty much the last straw that shows they can't deliver what the customer wants. And just have no idea what they are doing.

That's why they are focusing on smaller phones and iPad pros that are pretty useless in the business world l. How do they ever think a iPad pro can replace a Microsoft surface that is a actual tablet/PC when the iPad pro still runs iOS a phones software with no mouse support, no file system, no usb inputs. It just doesn't work.
