I'm perfectly fine with my 2018 11" Pro. But I wouldn't mind upgrading to a 12.9", skipping the cell modem this time. But then I look at the prices and what I get for it. It's so small and incremental. The only real benefit (aside from the bigger screen) would be the ability to use an external screen. I tried that with my current one, which works fine in mirror mode. Using a mouse is ridiculous and the external screen isn't touch capable. So I'm not certain I'd be using it a lot.

So, I'm using a 4 year old machine with far less RAM and storage and a few other small upgrades that it's missed out on. But I use it every day for music production. On holiday, I didn't have my synth and it was just the iPad, with AUM and lots of VSTs. It took that without skipping a beat.

It's pretty clear that for the iPad, just like for mac and iPhone, new announcements are not very noteworthy. For mac, the M1 was big news. Aside from that, all of Apple's products have become a replacement market (like fridges). Nothing new to get excited about.

hopefully there an M2 14" iPad Pro coming!!!!! Id definitely be up for that, especially as you can use external monitors properly now on Mx based Pro's.

Might be a good time to pick up a M1 iPad Pro after the announcement. That's plenty powerful for most.

Also, I'd love to see a drop in the price of the Magic Keyboard.

I upgraded today from a 2020 (A12Z) to 2021 (M1) model because the prices have already dropped $100 at some stores.
I didn't wait for the new ones and I'm ok with it for one the price I paid and for two here is my prediction for the new iPad Pro's. It's going to be very underwhelming. Same designs I think with minor changes.

iPad Pro 11 will get M2 and the same MagSafe charging port on the side as the MacBook has. I don't see wireless magsafe coming to the iPad. Other than that the 11 inch stays the same.
iPad Pro 12.9 will get M2, Magsafe port but also dynamic island like the iPhone 14 Pro has. Other than that everything stays the same.
Again these are just my predictions but from rumors and everything I've read about the shortages, they are a good educated guess. Prices will probably stay the same also if I had to bet. And I will predict a November release date with the show towards the end of October seeing how the beta builds are still (f) builds.

I'm not getting conned into upgrading my M1 iPad Pro this year. The 2020 to 2021 update was effectively a waste of money other than the mini LED screen improvement. Apple has gotten really good about making very minor features feel like a big deal and people need to not buy into the hype.

Plus, state of iPadOS 16 is a complete mess right now, which gives me little to no faith regarding the direction they want to take for pro users. Every couple weeks I keep trying out Stage Manager, only to be severely disappointed by the fundamental function of it as well as the complete buggy mess it still is. I've seen almost no progress since WWDC, which gives me little hope that we'll have a version that is 'fixed' by the time the new iPads are released.

You're not meant to upgrade every year. Apple offers 3 year AppleCare on most things for a reason. Because they're expected to be in service at least that long. Hopping from year to year the vast majority of the time will be a minor incremental improvement.

Major architecture shifts such as Apple Silicon excepted. But they don't happen frequently.
